Such an awesome video. Dubstep may have gone out of vogue since 2013, but in 2040, people will be coming back to this video to learn how to make "classic dubstep" from the time before OTT and Serum!

IF YOUR BASS SOUNDS DIFFERENT READ THIS!!!!...Hello, the problem you are having is most likely the notes he is playing, unfortunately he doesn't tell you the notes, but fear not here is a solution to your problem remember in the beginning he was trying to show you to wave form of a triangle and was making really low, you probably watched and didn't realize that when he went to go make the note lower he went to the master and pitched it down 2 octaves (-24) and throughout the video he doesn't change it back if you do this it shouldn't be hard to find the right note and make the same sound. Hope i helped have a great day! c: God bless everyone!

Yeah, I realize how dumb I sound in this video now. I've learned a LOT more about FM synthesis since this video. Even using calculus to determine modulation patterns XD I know that operators are modulated by the derivative of the modulating operator, which is why a triangle wave behaves like a square wave; constant positive slope for first 0.5T, constant negative slope for remaining 0.5T. Still have to find magnitude of modulation though. Also, I use the morph pad a lot now :3

You, sir, are a genius. I've made it about halfway through the tutorial (to the part where you add the FM8 patch to the vocals) and it's only taken 8 hours or so. What I have now compared to what I started with are worlds apart, as is my understanding of the software. Thank you.

FM8 has a matrix-based routing system, whereas Operator only has a number of fixed routing configurations. Operator also has a maximum of 4 operators, whereas FM8 has 6. Operator ratios are also limited in Operator, which has a discrete set of ratios, whereas FM8 has a continuous range of operator ratios. I think I've covered the majority of the most common features of both synths - anyone else who can add, feel free to do so :)

Once installed, FM8 will be placed in your default VST plugins folder. You must locate and select this folder in Live's preferences. Once Live knows the location of this folder, it will catalog all the VSTs present in that folder.

**SOLVED** Anyone else finding that this sounds really different on newer versions of fm8? even by 3:30 when he switches to the triangle wave I'm finding that I'm getting very different harmonics out of the sound. I wonder if NI have slightly updated the triangle sound since then. The confusion came from when he turned all the velocity sensitivity up. Make sure you're inputting notes at 100 velocity! Otherwise it won't sound the same

You can use the Morph function as well to change the sound of FM8. Make the first sound you want, then go to the Easy/Morph panel, and under the XY, click on "Normalize Timbres". That will copy the sound to all of the four slots for the morph. Once you do that and change the sound of at least two of the xy slots, you can modulate the X or Y instead of mapping them individually, which is of course, very tedious.

I've had a think about it, and I recommend reducing the vocoder's 'Depth' parameter. That will make the sound sit more with the carrier, and reduce the influence the vocals have on the carrier sound, decreasing overall 'wetness'. Increasing the bandwidth may also help reduce this 'wetness'.

If you use Live, you can do this in the piano roll. The small section underneath the piano keyboard will have vertical lines whose positions correspond with the starting position of each note. Drag these up and down to adjust the velocity of the notes. Greater precision can be achieved by holding "Ctrl" while dragging.

All I do is sidechain using standard method with Ableton Compressor and the use the EQ section inside compressor to cut the lows, which gives a short sidechain that ducks the track just enough to sound good, while not going overboard. Just play around with the EQ inside compressor, it's really useful :)

No, the sine curve is not parabolic. That fact rates a proof too. Suppose that the curve segment is parabolic. Then we should be able to fit a parabola to these three points: (0, 0), (π/2, 1), (π, 0) Having x-intercepts at 0 and π gives it this form: y = ax(x - π) Substitute (π/2, 1) 1 = a(π/2)(π/2 - π) 1 = -aπ²/4 a = 4/π² y = (-4/π²)x(x - π) y = (-4/π²)x² + (4/π)x Now let x = π/4. y = (-4/π²)(π/4)² + (4/π)(π/4) y = -1/4 + 1 y = 3/4 However, sin(π/4) = √(2)/2, and √(2)/2 ≠ 3/4. Therefore, we must reject the proposition that the sine curve is parabolic.

You can do the mod-thingy within FM8 if you are using a DAW that doesn't support multi-parameter modulation. It#s even easier that way... Just save two patches: One with all the modulator-volumes set to the levels shown in the video. Name it "Skrillex Open" or something. Then set all the volumes to zero and save the patch as "Skrillex Closed". Now go to your browser within the FM8, find the two patches you just created and drag&drop the "Closed" patch to the lower-left morph-field in the upper part of FM8 and drag&drop the "Open" patch to the upper-left morph-field. Now by dragging the handle in the morph-field up and down you get the exact same modulation effect. If you want to automate it from within the DAW (e.g. Cubase), just find and use the "Morph Y" parameter. Done!

As FL does not have an 'Instrument Rack' with macro controls, you have to use the X-Y Controller. Assign the parameters to these, and use the min and max knobs to set the range. It's more tedious than Ableton, but it works in the end. You won't be able to save the patch in a rack though.

@jAyMaC128
@jAyMaC128 11 жыл бұрын
Use the mapping formula in the parameter automation settings. In FL Studio, automated parameters are mapped as a function of input, f(input), where input is the value of the slope of the automation clip at a particular point in time. Basically, reducing the slope of the function will reduce the maximum output values. TL;DR, or if you don't like math In the mapping formula box, put a number in front of 'Input' (fraction of 1) that you want the max value to be, i.e. 0.32 for 32 in FM8's matrix.

Well, you can do it in any DAW that supports a vocoder. It won't sound exactly the same, but the idea is to vocode the FM bass with any vocal-sounding sample, and you'll get a vocal-sounding bass. I don't know if Logic has a stock-vocoder, but there are some vocoder AU's you could use.

You're absolutely right. A DAW is like a language. There are many, and they are all vastly different, but the main purpose is to communicate meaning to others; you just need to understand the language used, and if you want to say the same thing in a different language, you must do some translation. I, for one, prefer to speak Ableton, but a similar approximation can be translated to FL ;)

FL Studio users, you can modulate the E -> F BL in the matrix by pressing the dropdown button next to the gear icon on Fruity Wrapper, then clicking Make Editor Thumbnail.
