I think the interceptor myth stems from the fact that the Tomcat's primary job was to protect the Carrier Group from Ruskie bombers carrying long range anti-ship missiles, but that doesn't mean that it wasn't also a lean, mean, fightin' machine that incorporated all of the Air to Air combat lessons learned during Vietnam into it's design.

The F-14 was designed to carry the AWG-9/Phoenix weapon system. As mentioned by others, this was intended to intercept Bears & Bison bombers before they could fire cruise missles at the carrier. Thus, the long range of both AWG-9 and Phoenix. Based on the lessons learned in Viet Nam, the fighter community fought hard to insure the F-14 had medium and short range missile capabilities, and a big gun. Many don't realize the F-14 was designed from the outset with air to ground capability. We had bomb racks for all the aircraft produced. This capabilty wasn't utilzed for many years. When we upgraded to the AWG-15F weapons control system, we gained card slots to add the "dumb" bomb strike mission. With the addition of LANTIRN, smart bombs could be utilized. Bottom line, the F-14 evolved from its introduction to its retirement.

When I was on the Kittyhawk we had VF-154 aboard and they did a great job. In 2000 the Russians decided to put on a little airshow for us. Here's the short version, if anyone is interested in the full version I'll right it up. We were resupplying and drifted really close to Russian waters and they sent out 2 SU-24's and one SU-27. They buzzed the flight deck which put into motion launching the alert 5 while we were hooked up to the tanker which also had our cruiser hooked up as well. The Russians toyed with the Hornets going into the vertical to extend away from them. 5 more minutes go by and you can hear the sounds of a real fighter starting up. Old Tom wasn't as spry as he used to be and wasn't alert 5. The Tomcats Started out by cutting off the bugs and then glued themselves to the Russians asses. Our visitors didn't like the roll reversal and quickly decided it was time to go home, they didn't want to play with the Tomcats anymore.

5:25 I think you have to consider how it was portrayed during the acquisition process and how it was employed. If you recall, the MiG-29 was probably one of the best dogfighters in the world during its era but it usually wasn't used in that capacity. It was used as a point-defense interceptor even though it could hold its own against any 4th gen fighter at close range. Whenever you hear about the Tomcat, people always bring up that it was designed for intercepting Soviet bombers. Which ultimately was its most important mission but it wasn't the only thing it was capable of. The Navy isn't super fond of single-purpose aircraft, that's one of the reasons why they use seahawks instead of Zulu Cobras for anti-sub-warfare. The Foxbat and Foxhound were purebred interceptors, the Tomcat has a lot more in common with the Flanker or the F-15 than either of those.
@265justy3 жыл бұрын

The Tom Cat was the shit in those days, but I lusted to fly the A-7 Corsair II as I could not imagine anything cooler than being solely responsible for the operation of that aircraft from the time I saluted the launch officer till the flight deck crew roll up the steps so I can unass that bird. They encouraged me to go ahead and sign up as I might have the chance to go to FL if my eye could be corrected optically though the best I could realistically hope for was the backseat of a Tom Cat. If I could not drive I would rather walk, but I didn't have to as I was an artilleryman. That experience took my understanding of teamwork to a level I doubt can be reached on the playing field. Know that what I am watching is only a really good animation of a flight simulator, but have never had a proper appreciation of that second pair of eyes direct-wired to a human intelligence before though so well done gentlemen. And Growling Sidewinder what chance would you have stood of not getting flamed in any single-seater of this generation were you to find yourself in this scenario? The irony of this video is that the F-14, which people misbelieve is an interceptor (It was a multi-role fighter, that just happens to do the interceptor role very well) fighting four MiG-25 Foxbats, which ARE truly dedicated interceptors, which cannot dogfight. They were built to be point defense, carry big, fast missiles (and a huge radar), take off, fly fast and high, and shoot down B-70 Valkyrie bombers, return to base and do it all over again. The US has built interceptor fighters before, such as the F-101 Voodoo, F-102 Delta Dagger, F-104 Starfighter, and the F-106 Delta Dart, with varying degrees of success. The F-106 was probably the most successful in it's interceptor role and served into the 1980s. The F-101 was eventually pressed into a reconnaissance role. The F-102, after serving in the Air National Guard, found itself as everyone's favorite target drone. We pushed the F-104 on to many of our NATO allies, as a multi-role fighter. (Cue the Schadenfreude directed at the Luftwaffe.) The F-4 Phantom II (a much better multi-role fighter) initially started out as an interceptor for the US Navy, but since they were retiring the F-8 Crusader, and the F-111 project was going nowhere for the Navy, someone thought that the F-4 could be pressed into a multi-role fighter, and frankly, I think everyone just wanted to see if you could make a sports car out of school bus, and the Air Force found out that their version of the F-111 couldn't dogfight either.

What a machine the Tomcat was. I know it'll never happen because there's no need for swing wing fighters anymore, but an F-14 built today would look so awesome. Can't wait to see what comes out of the F/A-XX program.

4:13 I like how the radar output kind of looks like a TIE Fighter, reminding me of that Millennium Falcon TIE fight scene in A New Hope.
