@jacobdewey20532 жыл бұрын
@@abes3925 As much as I see that line parroted, I really think that's a misunderstanding of the ATF program acquisition. Despite how much people suck off the YF-23, the F-22 was a superior place at the time of the competition. It's engines were more refined (as much as I like GE, the YF120 was just not a very good engine at the time and it would've hampered readiness and cost), the design as a whole was much more mature (meaning less time till it entered service), capable of carrying more missiles, a superior dogfighter, etc. There's also the fact that Northrop at the time was having issues with the B-2 program at the time being behind schedule and over budget (yes yes, I know about the struggles with the F-35 program but this was the 90's. Also Northrop wasn't trying to design an aircraft for 3 branches who don't like cooperating on designs). The proposal that Lockheed put forward was more mature and was likely to enter service sooner and cheaper than the YF-23. Military acquisition isn't always about getting the best thing possible, it's about the best thing possible for a cost that congress/the public will accept. Would the YF-23 have ended up a better aircraft? Possibly. Does that mean the F-22 wasn't the right choice? Not necessarily. TL;DR: Defense acquisition is more complicated than teenagers and casuals on the internet would like to think. Was there lobbying by LM? Almost certainly. Does that mean it was the reason the F-22 was selected? doubtful. Especially since Northrop almost certainly was lobbying as well.

Based on some recent footage from this year's Zhuhai airshow, the J20 seems actually has decent dogfighting potential. Especially now that its engine has been switched from Russian products to domestically-made ones, its maneuverability has improved significantly compared to previous years. In addition to "basic" maneuvers like cobra or falling leaf, it can even roll continuously off the speed vector at high AOA while still maintaining climb - a maneuver I haven't seen any other aircraft do. Maybe the F16 has done it, but at a much smaller AOA. On the other hand, though, it still has not had TVC, nor does it have a gun. Both of these should be a problem for extreme dogfighting scenarios.

I would not call the switch from AL31 to WS-10C a upgrade. Yes, it has about 10% more thrust but it also weight around 200kg more per unit, that's close to 400kg of extra weight by switching the engine. And I have check all the Zhuhai footage from KZbin I can find. Could not see any that has Cobra, Falling leaf as you describe. As for your description of "High AOA roll". It seems like no more than a barrel roll during a climb. Granted not common but not entirely unheard of. I have seen at least F-18 and Rafale perform this maneuver in some clips. So far with all the footages available on KZbin, I haven't seen any that make J-20 worthy of "Super Maneuverability" label unlike F-22 and SU-57.

I believe the F-35 had an encounter with a J20 a couple weeks ago and from what I heard the U.S. was able to estimate that the J-20 had a much larger radar cross section than the F-35 and f-22. They said it was more similar to and F-16 cross section...

Not sure where you got the “estimate J-20 RCS” bit from, because among the only things the US public ally said was that they were “relatively impressed with J-20’s professional flying and its kill chain integration with the KJ-500”. Nowhere did they mention all RCS or obtaining anything new about the J-20.

Dogfighting is a very important key ability for a 5th gen fighter, but also able to shoot each other at long ranges is also important, if you want to build 5th gen fighter, you have to make sure they survive an close quarter encounter from a merge but also attack enemy aircraft from long distances without having any trouble whatsoever.
@mobiusflammel93722 жыл бұрын
I’m not entirely certain that’s the case. Or at least the US doesn’t seem to believe it is. I say that because every render we’ve seen of six generation fighters from defense companies appear to be focusing less on mobility and more on overall stealth which suggests they are not really concerned about dog fighting so much as engagements at range.

From what I have heard, the J-20 isn't so much a close in knife fighter like the F-22 or SU-57 and more a long range missile truck, being the biggest and most bulky of the 5th gen fighters. I remember an annalist discussing how the canards do reduce stealth but that it is unlikely that either the J-20 or SU-57 are as close to the F-22 or F-35 based on certain design features. The compromise in stealth isn't as important due to the good but not great stealth in the first place. The J-20 though appears to have a very good radar allowing it to lock target from very far away which pairs well with the new long range missile the J-20 has been seen to carry. This leads to the conclusion that while not as good as the F-22, the J-20 wasn't designed to directly fight it in the first place. Instead it was supposed to kick the pants off of the more common F-15, F-16 and F-18 planes the USAF has from long distance with lots of 120+km range missiles where its stealth is good enough make it nearly untouchable, and have the speed and high-speed maneuverability to get out of any fight it is loosing.

I should tag you in on one of my most recent glider designs, on IG. With your knowledge of energy states, and turn rate, I'd like your opinion. That being said, it most certainly isn't a stealth design. At least not in its current configuration. Any chance of an F-35 vs. J-20 video?

Your comment about the Countries not releasing combat capabilities reminded me of a ancient incident- Company was developing a tank strategy game in the 70's -:They contacted the US Govt for performance data of the M60 tank. Govt didn't give them the info, but did give them what they knew of the Soviet T-62 and 72. Company then contacted the Soviets requesting information - which they refused- but did give their information on the M60.... Was several years later that they found out both "estimates" were right on the money
