Live from The Record Plant 1985
Dave Valentin
Virtuoso flutist Dave Valentin brings his vibrant, innovative style and warmly engaging personality to the stage for this installment of Billy Taylor's Jazz At The Kennedy Center. Though jazz music is fundementally a product of several types of fusion, one of its richest subdivisions is the marriage of jazz and Afro-Latin rhythms known as Latin-Jazz. The Latin-Jazz sound was given wings by the partnership of trumpeter-bandleader Dizzy Gillespie and Cuban hand drummer Chano Pozo in the 1940s, a marriage arranged by bandleaders Machito and his brother-in-law Mario Bauza. Valentin carries on the tradition of these forbearers, while adding his own unique and creative expression.

We flautists consider the flute a Noble instrument and think unless you enter a conservatory you are nothing...Well Valentin change all of that in a spectacular way.

NO ME IMPORTAN LAS OPINIONES, PERO DAVE VALENTINE ES EL MUSICO QUE PUDO LLEGAR A LAS INTERPRETACIONES, MELODIAS Y DE LLEVAR SENTIMIENTOS DE LA MUSICA, AL MUNDO. LAMENTABLEMENTE EL QUE NO LE ENTIENDE, ES PORQUE LE FALTA UN POQUITO DE CONOCER EL VALOR Y DE DONDE VIENE LA MUSICA. LOS SONIDOS SON NUESTRO SISTEMA DE COMUNICACION Y SI ESTAS EN DESACUERDO DE ESO. PONGANSE A ESTUDIAR.

Those first two flutes (biggest one and smallest one)... so beautiful... what are they called?
@richardturnier
@richardturnier 6 жыл бұрын
The big one is a bass flute made out of bamboo -- if you search for images of one you can see that bass flutes have a J shape, which is done to put the embouchure (mouthpiece) nearer to the finger holes... without this bend it would be unplayable because they would be too far from each other (if you really want to see this taken to extreme, look up "double contrabass flute"). For Dave's bamboo version, this bend was accomplished by using a thinner/smaller piece mounted onto the larger "body". I believe the second small flute that he plays is simply a basic small bamboo flute. You might hear the term "minor flute" used, but that usually relates to the key they play in, not their size.

Hi Margaret, the big one it's called "Moxeño" or "Moseño" or "Moceno". Probably is a post colombian instrument , usually played by Central Andes cultures. The small flute may be a Brazilian Pife (I'm not sure)
