Hey Grubz, one thing that's pretty helpful to know about pulling is the fact that lane creep aggro will ALWAYS prioritize other, opposing lane creeps over neutrals in their aggro range. As long as there are opposing lane creeps present, or about to run into your wave, any neutral camps you pull will not get attacked by your wave. So you can practice to time it to where your wave is in just the right spot by looking at the minimap for that little ball of creeps coming down your lane, while hovering over the neutral you wanna pull with your cursor. Then click attack when the wave (in the case of the Dire offlane) is around your tier 1 tower(ish) - you'll quickly get the hang of it. Generally, pulling is meant to get the creep equilibrium closer to your own tower, so farming is safer for your lane, and riskier for the enemy. When the two clashing creep waves are positioned close to your tower, pulling isn't really necessary, and it won't work because opposing lane creeps are too close to the area where the neutral pull camp and your wave would meet - your lane creeps will ignore the neutrals. Instead you might try to stack one of those pull camps, so that later, when a pull becomes necessary, the camp has enough creeps in it to fully kill your pulled lane creep wave, denying the entire wave to the enemy.

The instinct to take last hits your lanemate will miss is perfectly correct, and for example in a team of friends where you are all on the same page it is optimal. However you really need to keep in mind the "solo psychology". It comes down to trust, in a way. The balance of trust in a lane with a stranger is fragile. When your support goes for last hits it triggers a pretty visceral response in most people. It feels like you aren't trusted. They don't believe you're capable. They are scrutinizing your last hitting. Preventing denies etc is a different story though of course. But in general separating yourself from the game mechanics and considering whether optimal play that throws your teammate off is worth more than suboptimal play that at least protects your teammate's ego is good to consider.

as a support your early game should have next objectives : 1. maximize gold exp of you carry / 3rd pos offlaner: 1.1. So secure his farm by taunting enemies to attack/nuke you instead of him so he'll be able to lasthis w/o risk of death; Also help him with heals (even buy more if it's needed). 1.2. stay out of exp range if your position didnt allow enemies to harass you carry/3; There are other things you can do rather than just leeching exp. 2. deny enemy's farm and exp: 2.1. casual lasthits, and denying abilities (dark ritual alike) 2.2. but more effective way to deny exp and gold is to pull and let your wave die to jungle. 2.3. as your cant agro creepwave into jungle while they are fighting enemy wave > then push lane (ask you carry to also) so you change meeting point and will be able to pull next wave as enemie's still dealing with previous one. 3. harass enemies. 4. secure range creeps. It's OK to even nuke them or even split lasthit to prevent deny (as they gives nice exp chunk). At the end on early game supports get their boots+stick just by zero farming. Yet kills/assists, bounties, pulls, stacks, towers killed will allow 0 lasthit support to great timings on glimer/urn/forcestaff etc. And it all are provided by strong cores pushing lanes / able to stay solo vs 2. So you invest in them to get benefits later. In lategame it's even very effective to just follow you cores and stay behind them so you will save him during a gank (as his networth and deathtimer is begger than support's) or even turn it into a bait for counter massacre. ALSO: if it's OK on lane (or you cant achieve anything here) you can : 1. move to jungle to stack ; 2. help mider secure power rune (closer to you) at 4 +every 2 minutes. Power runes can help your mider to dominate/comeback or even allow him to gank other lanes due to power rune. At least it can allow you to deny same possibilities from enemy mider. 3. gank/tp save other lane. 4. deep ward to secure lane or to provide extra vision for positioning for your team push (not really a deal at your level of games).

Man Grubby has been doing so amazing! He juggles complex heroes while paying attention to nearly everything his chat throws at him and doesn't get too distracted. This game was an exception. Chat was all over with the help and he was far too busy focused on what he was trying to do. No hate, this is how we all learn how to play. But they were calling out everything he eventually came around to needing to understand in order to grasp the situation fully, as he prefers to. Even to me watching that Skywrath was clear they were a smurf. When chat said he had only one game at 1/3 of game time, it was 100% obvious to me. You should 100% care about players who come in to ruin games like Sky only because you will be stronger and more capable when you understand it the next time around. :)

Really enjoying what I’ve seen of you playing so far! Just wanted to point out a little thing worth noting, some (almost all) hero’s can be played in different roles. My favourite person to play right now is a mid Dark Willow. If you get the aghs, her shadow realm becomes a time duration not cancelled by the attack. So you build attack speed items and can do insane amounts of damage whilst not being able to be targeted yourself. Something like : boots, witch blade, aghs, moon shard, mkb, satanic, daedalus, moonshard

for skyrath the best item is force staff - you can use it when silenced to force yourself out of the radius of his ultimate. Also it can be used to save your allies. This is better than the euls as the euls cannot be used to lift your allies. Also you SHOULD care if the guy is scripting because it means he will ruin other games. The community relies on cheats being reported to keep the game good.

One of the reasons for people calling random player "smurf" is that DotA is a game where those ahead in the early game can snow-ball their advantage and easily win 1:3 fights. Also, most players don't understand when they are behind and cannot play properly in such situation. Plenty of games where one player has score of 25/2/10 and nearly single-handedly dismantle the enemy team goes 2/12/2 the next game, failing to get that early game advantage and unaware of what to do in such cases, they play just as in the game they were ahead. One of the best skill that low rated players should learn to improve their game is 'what to do when playing from behind'.

I was there during the live. Not only is the Sky a Smurf (not a good one, because he's at most a mediocre player) but he's almost surely a scripter (cheater). Took someone as experienced as Dendi 5 minutes to recognize it. And after paying attention to the gameplay, and now seeing it on the VOD is even more clear. The way he instantly chained all of Skywrath's skills in the 0.2 seconds of vision Grubby or his allies were on Skywrath's vision is so stupidly obvious even a decent player can see it. It also shows that the Sky is such a mediocre player that even with the script, he constantly was missplaying, out of position, not correctly targetting his skills (focusing wrong targets, because of the script obviously, playing in fog of war... If you can't see how obvious it is I don't know what to tell you.

But that is not Ranked game, where he dominates just for the fun of it or something else. Anyone who makes more accounts need to have some games in Normal games until he can play Ranked and is placed at his rating so he can continue playing with his peers. It's up to Valve to not place such new accounts with regularly new players. There is a statement in the beginning when entering DotA2 and even if you hit 'I have played DotA2 before' it still puts you generally in the same bracket. So, you cannot be 'smurf' in Normal (non-ranked) games and still players tend to overly use the term despite the player in most cases is far away from it. The Skywrath player in this particular game was obviously one with experience and on top of that most likely using scripts. That is still far away from being a 'smurf'.

People talk a lot about support causing a lane to flop and the core to become stunted. What you don't hear much of is cores having no concept of their supports spell functions and dumpstering their support by not playing with them. Willow is that support. If you have a bad laner to back up, it is not at all fun to play her. Get you a BS who plays with fusion, she can be one of the best and most fun supports.

It's supposed to be done when the creep wave is past that point and closer to the enemy tower, so the lane comes back and you potentially deny experience. When the creeps are already there, it doesn't do anything.

Is Sky sctripting? Sky spells can be cast very quickly - it is not that hard to consistently get the combos off in no time, once you get 100+ games on him. However: This player is overall too bad to have that kind of mechanical skill. It could be a case of quick fingers but very low intelligence, and considering he is a smurf, I wouldn't underestimate his stupidity. But, most likely a scripter.

The most disheartening thing for me when watching your DotA vids is the way your subs and your chat act. If you're dunking on the enemy team then it's "fine", "god gamer", "can't wait to see you go pro", but when an enemy you're fighting is a good player or is a smurf there's absolutely no acknowledgement in their skill or playstyle. Let's not forget that Grubby has multiple high profile players coaching him and giving tips, is himself a champion to a game very mechanically similar to DotA and can thanks to his job, put way more time into practicing than any of us could. I don't ever see anyone type on chat or on yt comments stuff like "you definitely should've read and memorized what more items do", "you shouldn't be so selfish when playing a support character", "you shouldn't ward every inch of the jungle/you should learn where to ward". Y'all have the patience of a caring parent towards a competitive athlete that is getting some of the best coaching possible but don't extend the same care towards the randoms he meets along the way that may be just as new as him or coming back after an extended break or just good players he ends up facing up against.

For once chat was giving half-decent advice about items. Too bad this was the one time Grubby chose not to trust them until it was too late ^_^ Almost every item on supports is ultimately situational based on enemy and your team composition and how the game is progressing and how much money you are getting/spending. At the moment it is way too much to ask from Grubby's limited experience to know them, so I hope people in chat would chill a bit about them, and would avoid offering advice if they aren't providing a reason for it, and aren't sure it is a good pick (some of the item suggestions seem like intentional trolls) Never the less, love how you are progressing in this series, but I think you should try out the hero just a bit more in learning mode to check out the build and the skills at least. Especially with crazy high skill-cap glass cannon heroes like she is, where just understanding her abilities/combos will make a world of a difference

Dark seer game was unwinnable, but you could have avoided death in the laning phase and as for this game, you just went random roaming with no particular reason early game, plus stole zeus' middle lane. Typing this comment as the game goes, so even if you'd won,my notes stay the same. Take notes on how you can improve your laning phase. You said it yourself that you do not have the "support mind", but you will need to develop it if you want to improve. GL!!!
