A cuckoo chick in a nest, pushes both eggs and the young over the edge of the nest, then is reared until time to leave the nest by the Dunnocks

You sound suspicious of evolution, and rightly so. Evolution is a new age religion that attempts to explain the origin of life. This creature, like all creatures, have been coded with instinct. The code is in their DNA, like a computer code, and no intelligent code ever produced itself. God is one name we use to describe our Creator and DNA code is an easy way to see that we must have an incredible designer who created us with words. (Our DNA is created with chemical letters.) Now, I might ask, why would God make the cuckoo to be such an awful bird? And then I remember, we live in a fallen world. This is only a trial life. There are many more evil things than this particular parasitic bird. Men do more evil than this creature. If we turn away from our own evil ways, and turn toward the Lord Jesus Christ, we will be saved and enter the heavens where these kind of problems no longer exist. There is a spiritual evolution, but with our heavenly Father watching over us, and not by chance.

It's bizarre to me how the mother, seeing one of her young fall out of the nest before her eyes, does nothing about it. It's some evidence to me that this bird at least doesn't really have emotion, they're just programmed to do certain things, like feed any young bird(s) in its nest.

@@electricheartpony No, certainly not all animals have those emotions, in fact, the majority of animal species just straight up have *no* emotions. Insects, crustaceans, molusks, and invertebrates in general, which make more than 90% of all animals species, have no emotions because they lack the way of having them, either because their nervous system is archaic or straight up inexistent.

MrJabloney grieving for a dead one is instrinctual in humans too. Noone has to be taught to grieve unless it's a physcopath. You don't want to listen to facts you only have alot of baseless opinions so I'm done with this conversation. And yes animals leave their young to die. There is no conscious thought involved when the cuckoo chick throws the other chick out. It will throw anything out of its nest because the genes that evolved to cause a chick to do that have become commonplace in the cuckoo gene pool as it's such an effective survival strategy. Plenty of bird species have a defence by being able to recognise their own eggs or spot cuckoo eggs and eat them. I recommend "The Selfish Gene" by Richard Dawkins for anyone who wants to understand how these instincts and adaptations evolve beyond just seeing the animal as "cruel".

Some crapulous humans do this too, seriously but in a little different way. The labor of the mother bird is the equivalent of people working. The salary is the subsistance. The chick is parents trying to pass ther fruit of their work to their progeniture (children). The cuckoo chick is the bankeSsters who do not work but get products, car, houses, food that other worked to produce. The cuckoo leg pushing the legitimate chicks out of the nest is the Federal reserve bank printing currency and giving it (at preferential interest rate) to their friends bankers. Here you have to understand that printing currency is the equivalent of stealing work and effort that working people have to do to earn a salary. Finally, just like the cuckoo these people are parasites, who get the best of products yet steal from the rest of society.

PLEASE DON'T HATE KOEL cuckoo chicks emit copious amounts of a sticky, smelly substance. The authors tested the novel hypothesis that this stinky substance deters predators from the nest. If cats and hawks were given tasty pieces of chicken meat, but smeared with the cuckoo’s excretion, these typical nest predators were repelled. This indicates that the cuckoo’s excretion is a very powerful defence mechanism, likely to save both cuckoo and crow chicks alike if a predator comes calling. So although crows appear to be behaving generously towards cuckoos, they are in fact still selfish - they tolerate cuckoos because of the benefit they provide their own young.
