This is Grumant the abandoned coal miner town on Isfjord. The remaining houses are falling apart. The mine was closed in 1965 and belongs meanwhile to the cultural heritage on Spitzbergen. Nothing may be changed in this place, it will pass away naturally.
Officially, Willem Barentsz discovered the Spitsbergen archipelago in 1596. But it seems that the Pomors, a tribe that settled on the coast of the White Sea, regularly visited Spitsbergen to hunt before Barentsz arrived. They knew from the Vikings that Greenland lay to the north-west. They probably thought they had reached this land. For this reason, they called the land Grumant.
Later, in 1912, the name of the mining town was chosen in memory of these first Russian hunters.
