Grumman HU-16B Albatross Taxi and Take Off

The Grumman Albatross is a large twin-radial engine amphibious seaplane that was used by the United States Air Force, the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard, primarily as a search and rescue aircraft. The Albatross was developed to land in open ocean situations to accomplish rescues. Its deep-V hull cross-section and keel length enable it to land in the open sea. The Albatross was designed for optimal 4-foot seas, and could land in more severe conditions.

N98TP is not an SA-16A which was a short-wing USAF variant only prior to 1962. After 1962, the proper designation was HU-16A, but this is not a short-wing variant. It was originally built as an SA-16A, but it was converted to a long-wing configuration - the 46th such conversion done for the USAF. It was completed and re-delivered on June 17, 1957 - making it an SA-16B, but after DOD re-organization of military aircraft designations in 1962, all SA-16B officially became HU-16B aircraft.
