I worked at an animal sanctuary for a few years, and we had a handful of sulcata tortoises very similar to Seamus. Theyre definetly intersting animals, and can be aggressive and very destructive if left to their own devices for too long. Most of the sulcatas we had there ended up being forfeited to the sanctuary due to folks pirchasing them as pets when they were very young. At birth, theyre only about the size of a saucer, but grow exponentially and can live up to a hundred years or more with proper care. People were usually told that they would only grow to be about the size of a large platter, only for them to surpass that size within a few years. Buying one of these critters is a lifetime commitment that will likely be passed down to your children, and even possibly their children. Its not like having a dog or cat that lives a maximum of fifteen to twenty years. They can also be dangerous to handle; theyre very heavy, and require several people to lift and move. We used the slings and dollies that furniture movers use, and even then it took a minimum of two strong people to move them. The spurs on the backs of their legs are also potentially dangerous; getting your hand or fingers caught behind them can easily break bones and cause painful crushing injuries. We were told to never put our hands or feet behind their legs to prevent such instances. They also have a staggering amount of bite force, especially for an herbivore. Should you agitate one and irritate it to the point of biting, it can easily tear into bone and skin. Another big reason we had so many sulcatas being forfeited was due to their immense skill at digging holes; a motivated sulcata can dig a hole big enough to fit themselves into within an hour, and can construct tunnels several feet wide and twice as deep within less than a day or so. Moral of the story is that if you want an exotic pet, make sure you educate yourself as much as you can before purchasing one, and make sure you and your family is equipped to feed and care for them.

Smaller tortoises and turtles can climb too. Bigger ones try to but aren’t quite as adept as say a Russian tortoise. Tortoises are excellent escape artists. They can dig, climb, rearrange furniture, bulldoze through whatever is in their way, open sliding doors and refrigerators… mine turned a lamp stand into a catapult and her heat lamp almost set fire to the wood floor. They really are magical creatures.

Thank you for taking care of Seamus after your a-hole of a mother abandoned him. Pets are a responsibility. You've worked hard to gain his trust. Wonderful. I remember folks who inherited a parrot when a mother died. Didn't blame the mother for that. They were scared and that freaked out the bird. I finally talked them into giving him to a rescue org and he got to spend time with other parrots and with people who understood him. The long lived pets are a big, big responsibility and people have to prepare for them.
