I paid $79 for a pair of Merrel hiking boots 4 years ago and they have lasted longer than any shoe I've ever owned. I have horrible boney heels and Merrels cup your heels so well. I then purchased other shoes and regretted it big time and started wearing my old trusted merrell shoes. Now I have a pair of Crosslander 2s on the way and can't wait to put um on . Merrell are freaking awesome , and last a long time .

Thanks for pointing out the difference between the two. I'm on my 4th or 5th pair of Moabs. I like them a lot. I use the taller hikers version for yard work also. On a couple of my shoes I've had the front black two cap come unglued. I reglued them and kept wearing them. I've worn out a couple of sets of laces also. When ever I finally pitch footwear, I usually pull the laces and save them to use as replacements. They don't take much room to store. Even when you get the Moabs filthy they clean up pretty well.

I still have my Merrill hikers from 32 years ago. Wore them again for a partial hike around Mt. Washington last summer. A bit dated looking, but new insoles, and they keep on climbing!

Love the MOABs! I've got the Gore-tex high ankle boot for wet and cold weather, and a pair of the Ventilator shoes for more daily stuff or light hiking, have worn them for years and they're fantastic.

Absolutely LOVE my MOAB's. .I have 2 pairs (Black&Grey) (Tan&Coyote)...I have a wide foot so I can definitely relate to choosing a wide toe box on boots, shoes and sneakers...I also own pairs of SALOMON and KEEN both have an ample "Wide" toe box...(The SLAOMON were the most "narrow" of the "Wide" boots, for me it depends on the materials used (mesh to leather/rubber ratio).

I'm a Moab wearer. I found them maybe 15-years ago. I have a normal width foot so the medium size provides plenty of room on the toe box. Because I walk (a lot), I buy two pairs at a time. I alternate them with each getting a day to rest (and dry out) before being worn again. Two pairs last me about two years before I wear out the sole at the flex point. I live in the desert and mostly walk in the sage lands, so there is a lot of abrasion from the sand and rocks where we walk (my dog and I). I have a third pair with the waterproof liner. I bought that pair a half-size larger because of the liner. The waterproof boot in the extra half-size feels about the same as the normal boot in my normal size. The waterproof are good in the winter when we have snow. A heavier sock helps keep the feet warm. Some folks find the fit of the Merrell boots doesn't work for them. There are other good boots out there. But if the Merrell fits you, then you'll probably love them. I know I have no intention of switching, unless Merrell screws the pooch and makes a significant change in the fit.

I wore Moab's for years in the Middle East but with arthritis and degenerative changes in my feet I moved on to other brands. Still great boots! BTW, I got steroid injections in my knees a little over a week ago and have started riding my bike again every morning. Short rides as I build endurance but thanks for the motivation!!!

I have plantar fasciitis and have found Oboz Sawtooth hiking boots to be the most comfortable, and long lasting. They're made in Montana. They tend to run a little narrow for size, but buying the Wide size will take care of that.

Made the switch to Yakotas last summer, I picked them up on sale the summer before ,wore them for a week and immediately ordered another set of Moabs. I was not a fan due to some differences in the toe box shape, but last summer both pair of Moabs were just nasty and didn't have time to clean them, put on the Yakotas .They really started growing on me, breath better, bit wider at the ball, not getting the hot spots I did with the Moabs, noticeably lighter, and they don't hold mud like the Moabs- very rarely wear the Moabs other than yard work. Only real "downsides" are the ankle protection and foot slippage , but those are really trade offs for more breath ability and room.

I have both the Moabs and Yakotas (both size 14). But, the Kakotas are not sized the same, they are about 1/2 size smaller. Make sure you try them both on, if you can, before purchasing, or make sure they can be returned. Like them both. Thanks Randy. Keep up the good info.

Off trail I like the Merrell style shoes. Backpacking on established trails, however, I’ve switched to trail runners. Tried the popular Altra Lone Peaks & I see why they’re so popular. Crazy comfortable & the super roomy toe box they’re famous for.

You named the difference: use the Moabs on rough terrain where you need support and the Yokotas on trail and street. Merrell makes great boots, but they are too wide for my feet For off-trail hiking and work cutting logs, cutting trail, and clearing brush, I use a stiffer boot for support underfoot and safety, currently some Danners. For hiking and backpacking on trails I just wear whatever trail runner I can buy on the cheap, the objective is to move easily for a sustained time with the least amount of energy expended.

I bought a pair of high top Merrell shoes probably 10 years ago. I still have them and they are still wearable. However I do not wear them. One of the lace hooks has a sharp edge on it. This goes through laces in no time at all. I even bought Kevlar laces and it tore those up. I must have gotten a fluke pair because Merrell is still in business and this does not seem to be a problem for others.

My old pair of Moabs just died. Sole came unglued. But I didn’t wear them out hiking, around here. The literal first day out, I had a mesquite thorn go all the way through the sole and into my foot. That’s a no-go hard use around here.

I was going to get some MOABs till you mentioned the Yakotas, needed something with a propper wide size and toe box (which they do have) since the other shoe i normally got obviously went through some redesign to cut costs and wore out twice as fast despite getting a price hike too. Glad I got the Yakotas, super comfy and light for summer wear when I'm not wearing my Bellevilles. I'll probably pick up some of the "high top" style Moabs mid summer or fall use.

I just replaced my Danners with some new Moabs a couple months ago. I had a pair for about five years and then tried the Danners. I love my Moabs and will probably never wear another pair of hiking boots again. I do need to get a woodland field jacket though. My black one is cool and all, but nothing beats the cool factor of the old woodland pattern.

great video bud i will say The life of the boot Just depends on how often you use them. I burnt through my boots probably within 8 months I walk gas lines for a living And I walkanywhere from 6 to 11 miles a day On average on a 9 to 10 hour shift. But overall the only bad thing I have to say about them is that they are not waterproof like they claim at all.

I love my Moabs, I've had quite a few pairs, but they last maybe 8 to 9 months if I'm lucky. I do HVAC. I'm not sure if it's some of the chemicals I work around or just the job in general. You should look into the Keen Durand 2s there, so freaking comfortable, right out the box, but still don't hold up as long as I would want them to. But I do get a few more months longer life out of the Keens than I do the Merrells.

I haven’t packed in boots since I retired from the Army in 2013. Im all in on trail runners for normal civilian pack weights of 30-35 lbs or less. The only way I’d go back to boots, even Merrill’s, is when the zombies come and its time to get busy.

I know merrell boots , and others who wear merrells boots ,shoes, sneakers, the lot, and we found that if the boot does not have a vibram sole the fit and feel are different, why would.i say that?? Because i didnt say it, my feet did, and others have too. Moabs are way to go all summer your feet never sweat in the moab vents.
