Hi Rod, I see this post has been up for nearly 11 months and my daughter and I have owned our GSG for about 18 months. We have kept pretty accurate records of ammo used, FTF, FTE ect and this is what we have come up with. 5500 rounds thru my GSG in 18 months, since it has all of the same workings as a full size 1911, I polished all parts including taking flitz to the frame rails and slide. I also changed some components to improve accuracy from CW Accessories LLC, bushing, barrel cone, guide rod and spring. FYI 1: the sights on the GSG, each one are a different size / height. FYI 2: After using CLP, frog lube, remoil - the best lube was a dry lube for the GSG AMMO Results 1. Winchester bulk any qty box - 250 FTF, FTE per 1000 - worse ammo for the GSG 2. Remington bulk - 6-10 FTF per 1000 3. Blazer bulk ammo - 6-10 FTF per 1000 4. Federal bulk blue box (525) copper dipped - 2 FTF, 0 FTE per 2000 (WOW) Just my .08 cents of experience.

This gun REQUIRES HIGH VELOCITY AMMO. Says so in the manual. I had similar results with bulk standard velocity ammo. “Hot” ammo of any make; I experienced far fewer failures than the 6-10 stated above. More like 1-2. Really hot ammo had zero issues. I, too, polished the paint overspray on the upper and lower off. Made a huge difference with lower velocity ammo.

GSG actually makes the SIG SAUER 1911 22LR, which is why they're identical other than the SIG insignia on the grips and the slide.
@seniorsurvivor7381 Жыл бұрын
Hi Rod, a few points with this pistol and GSG. Yes, the GSG and the Sig 1911-22 are made on the same assy. line, specifically by GSG and in GSG's factory. All parts are completely interchangeable between the two. The extra front sights are different in height....so the manual says. I stuck with the sight that came on it. As stated in the manual and on the Right Hand of the slide, above the trigger guard and beneath the ejection port, it is marked ".22 LRHV". This means .22 Long Rifle High Velocity. It has been my experience with GSG that ALL of their .22LR firearms are recommended to run High Velocity ammunition for proper cycling. This is stated in the manual and applies to their semi auto rifles as well (ie: Stg-44, MP-40, GSG-15 (SCAR), GSG-16 etc). Keep clean and oiled and run quality High Velocity ammo and you are good to go! BTW, great video.

The big question with .22 pistols is always "Is it dependable, or is it going to jam on me every 3 rounds?". I think the secret to a good .22 rimfire pistol is the quality of the magazine, and GSG has really good magazines. I've sold probably 20 of these pistols myself and never saw a return - just smiling faces coming off the range. Federal Eagles seem to work just fine with this gun.

Bought my gag about a year ago. My first pistol. Really liked it. I have purchased extra mags($30.00 ea) and the ugrade kit (angled barrel bushing and stainless steel guide rod with new spring. As an aside I saw that fake supressor for sale as an accessory {$49.00 - lol). Also smoothed the rails. Shoots anything with no problem. Enjoy your vids.

Bought one of these recently and have about 700 rds through it ... it cycles most everything just fine. Cheap Remington Golden Bullets to the AR-15 CCI high velocity. I am very VERY happy with this gun. Most of these videos talking about jamming ar mostly from 2011 to 2014 so i think GSG made some changes somehow. Mine was made in 2020 and works flawlessly.

Hi Rod, you're right, the GSG and SIG 1911-22s are made in the exact same factory. They are identical in every way (except the logo of course). Also, 90% of 1911 parts can be used in the GSG 1911-22. It's also super easy to defeat the magazine safety. Great video!

I use the GSG-1911 .22lr for my Concealed Weapons Permit class. I've got the trigger adjusted to where there is almost no slack. I love this gun. And it's very accurate. I've shot 1.25" at 15 yards. The only .22lr pistol I've shot with greater precision is the Ruger Mark III 22/45 bull barrel.... but it's barrel is a lot longer.
@TheGeodoctorcl9 жыл бұрын
Hi Rod, been a while since I commented but now I have a lot to say on this pistol. I own this pistol, and I love it! I would totally recommend this pistol to anyone. Look on the slide of the pistol Rod and it says 22 HV. This is not just High Velocity, but Hyper Velocity rounds!! The pedigree of this gun is 80% a real 1911, and only the top aluminum slide of this gun and the barrel etc, are the 20% that are not 1911. Knowing that, the recoil spring is a wee bit lighter, but you really need some bang to get this slide to function properly. CCI Segmented or Stingers are the best rounds for this gun, They cost pennies more, but give you 1650 FPS as opposed to 1250 FPS. Big difference and gun just loves this type of ammo. It now behaves like a 1911. Yes, this gun comes out of the same factory as the Sig's. GSG is owned by the brother of the guy who owns Sig Sauer. Hence the two guns come off the same assembly line and you are paying a bit more for the Sig name. I too hate the magazine disconnect, however, this is a 5 minute fix. Go on KZbin and type in disconnecting the GSG magazine disconnect, and voila you'll fix this with no problem. Now the gun functions as it should have. Yes, the mags are great quality. I too noticed they do not seat the upper loads well. Take your Dremel tool and shave 1/16th off the load ramp on your mags and this will fix your problem. ONLY the Tactical version of this gun comes with the accessory rail under the slide and the false moderator. You pay an extra $50 for these features. The others do NOT come with the accessory rail, but they also come in a variety of other colors. The Tactical unit is only available in black. I have upgraded my unit with aftermarket parts and now it eats anything I feed it. I usually run it on Remington Golden Bullet and I have no problems. I would recommend to anyone CWAccessories.com . Chet sells aftermarket parts for these guns and they run like tops afterwards. For an additional $100.00 USD you have a gun you'll love and it shoots better and more accurately than before! Sorry to be so long but I hope this helps anyone on the fence concerning this gun.

The magazine disconnect safety is there because the firing pin can be damaged dry firing as it is a 22 rimfire. The spring can be removed in the mainspring housing on the rear of the (backstrap doohicky) handle. Comes right out and doesn't affect the gun working as it should. It is a metal bar with a small spring, just remove both easy as that.

In Canuckistan, a magazine fed semi auto centrefire rifle needs 40 mags, with the five round restriction. 🙄 BTW, I learned to shoot in the mid-70s with CIL 22 ammunition; it was better than 90% what's available today.

Hey Rod. I bought that gun for Loreena. She loves it. Very few problems. As far as the mag safety goes, easy fix. Next time you clean it and have it apart there is a part that is in the mag well that you can leave out and then you can pull the trigger to dry fire. There is a video on KZbin.

I totally agree, "magazine safeties" aka "magazine disconnects" are a horrible idea. I will not buy any Ruger or other brand firearms that have them. On the other hand on the GSG 1911 it is a simple 10 minute fix to remove one part and one spring to do away with the D*#M thing. I have the compact version and it is light and fast. (I actually would have liked to hear your RANT, I'd like to see if it compares with my RANTS! )

CIL stopped loading that wondrous stuff in the '70s, so those cartridges are probably at least 40 years old. I used to work in their ballistics lab back in the day. The high velocity used to be loaded at 1335 f/s. The cartridges were loaded with Bullseye powder or an equivalent so you would still be getting pretty reasonable velocity out of a pistol barrel. I'm not too sure what the reason was for cutting the velocity back almost 100 f/s as I had been transferred by then as was busy shooting up tanks and blowing up mountains.

Yup. Had the same ammo Problem. Tried shooting American Eagle. Wouldn't eject about 80% of the time. Started using CCI MiniMags and it would only FTE about 20% of the time. Took some 800 grit sand paper, wrapped it around a small skinny file and polished the inside rails on the slide, and on the frame where the slide makes contact. I'd say now, as long as I clean it every couple hundred rounds and keep it well lubed I only get maybe 1 or 2 Failures per hundred. That's not so bad. In fact, it's better than my Sig SP226 in .22LR.... That's probably a 5% failure rate

I've put a couple of thousand rounds through mine and I agree with the cheap ammo issues. CCI and Winchester Super X work well for me. My guide rod broke around 1000 rounds , got a free replacement from the Canadian distributor for GSG. The cheap metal the slide is made from scratches easily and the finish wears quickly from holster use.

After dithering back and forth for the last couple of months, I decided to forego the GSG and went with a Walther P22 (mostly because I got it for $100 less and with an extra mag) via T.E.C Inc. I haven't gotten it out to the range yet. Hopefully soon. Only gripe about it I can see thus far is the magazine disconnect.

I’ve fired/owned both the P22 and GSG-1911, I still have the GSG. Seriously disappointed with the walther was a pain in the ass every time I cleaned it and wasn’t reliable no matter what I used in it.
@Urkie1979 Жыл бұрын
@@Mb9850a after using the P22 numerous times (few issues firing as I found it tends to like the hotter stuff), I have some regrets about going that route. Disassembly was definitely one of them. Then, also the short grip. My hand doesn't fit well and I'm constantly readjusting because of it. Definitely thinking I should have gone with GSG but I procrastinated too long and now, thanks to the handgun freeze, I'm stuck with it as my only 22 pistol. Oh well.

The magazine safety is really easy to remove if one wants to (it is basically as simply as taking out the mainspring housing and taking out the disconnect). I also think the ambi-safety is pretty weak in comparison to the usualy 1911 safety. In just a month of ownership, I've managed to snap off the right side of the ambi-safety (it sheered the connection pin off the left side). I tend to engage/disengage it a lot, but I've only run about 500 rounds through it so far. The safety is still working; it's just no longer an ambi-safety. Do you know what ammo your friend had for it? I've had the same problems in your video (to a lesser extent) with Winchester Super X (hollow-point; 1280fps/36gr), CCI Blazer (round-nose lead; 1235fps/40gr), and Winchester M22 (copper-plated; 1255fps/40gr). In fact, with the M22 and Blazer, I've had 4 squibs (which have made me rather careful when firing the GSG) and I'm frequently running into the problem where while it fed the round into the chamber, it doesn't fire (forcing me to rack the slide to eject it and continue) -- the bullet, though, does fire the next time I use it. With the Super X, I usually only get failure to eject (the casing gets stuck in the slide or doesn't eject at all) and failure to feed (the round won't come out of the mag until I remove the mag and reseat the bullet). A quick google search on CIL Imperial tells me they are long, long gone. CIL sold their ammo factory to IVI in the late 70s/early 80s and that factory burned down in the late 80s and was never rebuilt. So ... no more of those.

With semi-auto rimfires the ammo is much more important in terms of reliable operation compared to most centerfires. That said I stick with CCI. You can get CCI in bulk the cheapest is "Blazer" it's ~1250 FPS 40gr lead round nose comes in a box of 525. The next cheapest is the CCI Standard Velocity "target" stuff. It's like ~1025 FPS IIRC, 40 gr lead also but a little more quality castings so it's more accurate. That stuff comes in a box of 500. But it's a lower velocity so it might be trouble in picky semi auto pistols like this that need a little more omph to operate the slide. The best CCI bulk I've seen is the CCI "AR Tactical" comes in a box of 475 and is basically mini mags in a bulk box (~1250FPS 40gr copper plated) that stuff should work best in most semi auto 22s. It's very similar to Mini mag until you look up close and see the shape of the nose is a little different. But I've never seen Mini Mags in bulk so this works out a little cheaper for basically the same stuff. It was designed to work best in an AR-15 with a 22lr conversion bolt so it feeds the best in an AR. Those 3 bulk boxes are always what I buy for around $28 CDN and my Ruger 10/22 eats em all up. Good ammo in a good reliable semi-auto like a 10/22 makes for a %99.9 reliable rim fire experience. I've heard people complain a lot about semi rimfires yet I've easily gone several 500+ round intervals without a single misfire FTF FTE etc and I clean my 10/22 every ~800 rounds or so. It's actually surprisingly reliable and I truly believe the CCI ammo helps! Plus if it burns cleaner you can get away with cleaning less! rimfire is already cheap enough just spend a few extra bucks on good ammo! ~30 bucks or less CDN for ~500 is still dirty cheap!

22 isn't just about the price of ammo, some firearms just prefer certain brands. My Marlin 795 doesn't like Winchester ammo, but my wife's Browning Buckmark likes it just fine. As for that magazine disconnect, it's pretty lame. The Browning Hi-powers the Canadian army uses has it, so that's something that mars an otherwise stellar pistol if it actually makes it to the surplus market (currently Harper is planning on melting them all down so they don't "get into the wrong hands").

The magazine safety is easily removed. And dry firing a c rimfire will damage your barrel.

Awesome thank you. I think it be a great 1st gun. And a hobbie shooter. Cheap ammo. Would it be hard to take apart and assemble back?

@@EightySixed7 The Sig 1911 22 is not a firefly. The firefly is a P226 clone, sort of.

Hey Rod, have you thought about getting a Fibre Optic sight for your Glock? They're around $45. I know it's not a cheapy sight but it's better than spending $100 for a Tritium one, right? Just a thought! Great review by the way, I've been looking at getting one of these so this will help with my decision! Have a good one!

I've decided to get an Ameriglo front sight only. $35 at cheaper than dirt. And 2 cheapies as well.

Civil Advantage I would not be interested in buying from CTD, given the way they acted during firearmageddon 2013. I'd rather spend a little more to support businesses with a little backbone to them.
