An interesting hidden feature is if you hook a midi controller up to the synth, it triggers another set of oscillators. So if you're in mono mode you can have two separate mono notes playing. If you take a midi cable and plug the out into the in and have the keyboard trigger itself, it fattens up all of the tones in different ways depending on the patch.

This was my first real synthesizer - I got it when it came out when I was 15, and quickly sold it because I didn't feel it lived up to the more convincingly analog synth sounds I could make with my VSTs on my computer. Now I'm 26 and have a fondness for these digital VA sounds and I kinda want another one, lol!

I stumbled across the Gaia on American Musical Supply a couple of nights ago while looking for what will become my first physical poly synth. After watching your video, I'm seriously considering the Gaia now. I love that it's knob per function and has 64 voices. And thank goodness IT DOESN'T HAVE MINI KEYS!!! Also just subscribed. I'm actually from Canada, and know this song VERY well - I played it in dance clubs in the 80's. While Pascal plays a Roland SH-101 in the video, it wasn't actually used in the recording. The classic lead sound is actually a Korg Polysix. That was the very first sound I ever created when I first got my Polysix back in 1987! Other synths used are the Jupiter 4 and Jupiter 6, and the Oberheim OB8. The vocoder is a Korg VC-10. There was also a French-language version of the song released, which I have on 12" single somewhere...

There are 64 arpeggios in preset, it is not possible to create one with the synthesizer . But with Gaia tools you can create your own arpeggios for user patchs ; each patch has got his own arpeggio.

2:21 actually you can name your databases and store as many on the usb memory as you wish. You can then activate any one you wish by naming it ROLAND. It is true that each usb database is the full 64 patches and you will need a laptop to rename the database ROLAND but a 64 patch database is only about 1 MB. So theoretically you could store around 16,000 databases on one 16G memory stick
@ScottsSynthStuff
@ScottsSynthStuff 2 жыл бұрын
True, but you would have to remove it from the synth, put it in the PC, rename the files, then put it back in the synth each time you wanted to access a different sound set. On the System-8, you can name the files, and select from the different files on the USB stick because it has a small display - obviously not an option on the GAIA.

@@ScottsSynthStuff Yea thats a good point and introduces another device into the mix to get it done which may be a hassle for some. But maybe not such a big deal for most unless playing live and need access to more than the 128 internal and 64 external patches for one song. OK a stupid comment nobody needs more than 192 patches for one song. More relevantly, I have a midi controller with +10,000 patches availible at my finger tips and after searching through thousands of pathetic patches I realized that a hand full of really good sounds was way more useable and user frendly for that matter. Not that 10,000 patches is too many or anything, (hehe) but I do think there's value to limiting a list. My feeling on it is that since the GAIA is marked as a virtual analog synth it would be sacrilige to put a display on it. But I do feel that the fact that you can store patches was necessity in todays day and age and they wouldn't have been able to omit that capibility thank goodness. My reccomendation to anyone, is take your absolute best 64 patches and write them to the internal user group then write the next best 56 patches to your usb memory group keeping bank H,1-8 empty for saving your latest generated patches. Now you have access to 120 of your favorite patches plus 8 empty slots to store new sounds. I've even herd tell you can overwrite the 64 locked preset patches with a special procecure explained in the instructions but I haven't tried it or really looked into it yet so don't quote me on that. Hey Scott, thans for your reply and thanks for your videos I enjoy watching, will continue to do so, and have learnd a ton from your content.

This was my first hardware synth. I still own this puppy. You can coax some very good sounds out of it, no doubt. I primarily use it for taking to jam sessions or going to the beach for a little zen. I probably won't use it for any recordings though as I have some analogue gear and some VST's that are better suited (IMO). I know this synth got a lot of hate from the usual suspects and forums but it really is an "it is what it is" type synth; lots of people love it too so it can't really be all that bad.

Great video Scott. A really nice synth to learn synthesis, but also to have some hours playing around as a more experienced synth enthousiast. There is always the rumor that it is not a VA, but a sample based synth. At the othervhand who cares when you can come up with really nice sounds and have the joy of programming your own, instead of using presets.

Thanks Scott for your work. I love the Polyphony. So many other "elite" synths still skimp on this with Mono, Para (fake poly), 4, 5, 8 voice. Is this 1993? Watching voice stealing on the Deepmind and System 8 is pretty ridiculous, but they are fantastic synths. I just don't understand the skimping on polyphony (I understand about DSP allocations, etc.). The flexible editing on the GAII is also impressive.

According to the manual you should be able to save individual phrases and patches to the USB as you would the User Patch memory. There is a way to recall and save everything to/from the User memory. Are you sure you aren’t doing this instead? My FW is 1.02.

I think it's not that bad to save and load all 64 presets at once, without any option to choose. 64 patches are pretty much, more than you would ever use at once, and it always saves all 3 oscillators, so you can, if you want to, multiply that 64 by 3. I am doing this right now, every user patch has 3 different variations when I turn on only 1 osc or 2 or all 3 osc together. If I imagine I had to scroll through some kind of display to select a specific preset out of maybe thousands, if you fill your whole key, I would go crazy. Better have 64 on 1 USB stick, so you can create project based usb keys, And you dont need an annoying Display. You could even remeber every single preset of these 64, so I know exactly what sound is at B-6, or G-2. Its easy to remeber that way.

True, if I were to design one today I'd have either a small screen on it to allow the changing of parameters without all the shift keys, or better yet - a bunch of new buttons that perform all those hated "shift" functions. I'd also increase the resolution of the oscillators and filters, to get rid of some of the quantization noise at the highest frequencies (this affects many VA synths). But otherwise, it's still a great synth!!

Honestly it's up to the musician, not the instrument. Synthesizers are used in everything from rock to (yes) classical. In fact, I wrote and recorded a song that mixed together synthesizers and classical: kzbin.info/www/bejne/np_PaGSrnpeNjKs Synthesizers can sound like pretty much anything, so there really is no limit to the music in which they can be used. The only limitation is the imagination of the musician.

Good ear. I didn't hear it originally. It sounds like a little bit of clipping. I thought at first, "oh I must have clipped it when I recorded it" - but I just went back and checked, and, no. It's actually a tiny bit of noise at the very beginning of the sound. When you play several keys at once (like I was there, playing a chord) the noise of the notes becomes much more audible. I didn't deconstruct the sound, but I suspect he is using that noise to represent the "click" sound of a B3. I did try playing those chords with the volume turned way down, but it's still very evident, so it's definitely part of the sound itself, and not clipping.

23:40 --> extra PCM sounds, ... Hook up another keyboard via midi. Put THAT keyboard on channel 2 and you get 100 EXTRA PCM sounds. . It doesn't matter in what mode the gaia is. You don't have to have special settings or special banks or press this or that button. If channel 2 comes in, Gaia will play the extra PCM sounds :-) . BONUS. if you use channel 10 instead of 2, you have 1 bank of drumsounds ie. 1 drumkit. .

Correct, if I'm not mistaken, the GAIA was one of (if not THE) last Roland synth that supported General MIDI in this way. The reason it has this capability (PCM sample playback) is because the waveforms it uses for the VA engine are actually samples, not oscillators. Shhhh! Don't tell anyone! :)

@@ScottsSynthStuff Cheers for clearing that up for me dude, I've got a JDXI and it's time for an upgrade (long over-due) and the GAIA was one of the options I was looking at but all in all I think they sound very similar to be honest (well atleast some tones do from what I hear on KZbin) so I'm not entirely sure on a clear upgrade route from the JDXI, I've got a uno-synth and a TD-3 hooked up to a blue sky to compliment it but now I'm looking at getting a new full on work horse, any suggestions? Hardest thing ever trying to figure out which is the right one to go with

@@l-requiem1308 I think you would not be thrilled with the GAIA, as you would be losing a considerable amount of functionality from the JD-Xi. Honestly, my "do-everything workhorse" synth is still my MODX. I use it for everything. It can do real instrument sounds, fat analog, samples, FM, drums, it's incredibly capable.

@@ScottsSynthStuff Thanks for getting back to me mate I'll take a look into the MODX series, what variant would be best as an upgrade? Don't wanna break the bank I'm looking in the £800-£1000 range.
@ScottsSynthStuff
@ScottsSynthStuff 3 жыл бұрын
@@l-requiem1308 The MODX6 is definitely in that range. The only difference between the MODX6 and MODX7 is extra keys (and an extra hundred quid). MODX8 has 88 weighted, piano-style keys.

I’m learning my Gaia by watching YT videos, but a book would also be useful. Can you recommend one on subtractive synths? Thanks!
@ScottsSynthStuff
@ScottsSynthStuff Жыл бұрын
The GAIA is a fantastic synth to learn subtractive synthesis on. I've never really looked at books on the topic, but the one book I keep seeing people mention that they find very useful is "The 4 Element Synth: The Secrets of Subtractive Synthesis" - you can get it here: amzn.to/3HrymIe

Hi Scott! Can the gaia arpeggio be synced with the alesis sr16 through midi? Thanks
@ScottsSynthStuff
@ScottsSynthStuff 3 жыл бұрын
If the SR16 can be set to be the MIDI clock master (I'm pretty sure it can) then yes, the SH-01 can be set to sync its MIDI clock to the external master, and then arps can be synced to that.

They used to sell them separately, but I don't see them on the site anymore. I'd give them a call, I'm willing to bet they would make them available for you.

I definitely would. It's quick and easy to do sound design on, and I end up taking it with me to places a LOT. I hate playing live on mini keys, this has a decent keybed, it's small enough to carry places easily, and it sounds good. I definitely don't use it in the studio as much as some of my other synths, but it does get used.

The GAIA is really an excellent machine with, of course, its qualities and its faults, but which completely seduced me. On the other hand, the use of Momo GAIA SH-01 Midi Editor remains a big disappointment. There is also the Grauw editor which is limited but more relevant in my opinion.

You used to be able to buy them separately from Sweetwater, now it appears you only get them (free) when you by a GAIA synth from them. You might try sending them an email asking if you can get them any other way.

Correct, the "oscillators" are based on samples rather than algorithms. Do people even know, or care that much? I don't think so.

hi Is it multitimbric?
@ScottsSynthStuff
@ScottsSynthStuff 2 жыл бұрын
No, monotimbral. That said, remember that you do have three oscillators, and each of those oscillators can be set up to produce a completely different sound. You can switch those oscillators on and off, and layer them as you see fit. So not quite multitimbral (where you would have different sounds on different parts of the keybed), but you can get close to it.
