Off topic question. Do you bring your tools (anvils) inside when not using them? Or do you treat them before the end of work with some oil or something to keep them so clean?
@gstongs6 жыл бұрын
Drew, Good question. I leave most of my tools right where they are. While I am outside, the area I am working in is covered. I sometimes spray and wipe down my tools with WD-40. Also, frequent use will help prevent most rust. Thanks for watching. Glen

just trying to think of where i need to make a tenon in blacksmithing. any obvious answers i am completely missing??
@keithrhodes73866 жыл бұрын
Look at a few other videos of shaping reins on a pair of tongs, or the handle of a long spoon. Any time you want to reduce the work from non-round to a round section, or from round of a greater diameter to one of lesser diameter, this is a very useful tool for getting a consistent shape and size. Also, if you can't easily get steel stock in a size to match your punches and drifts, you can use this tool to make rivets of suitable size size.
@1day1296 жыл бұрын
@@keithrhodes7386 Thanks Keith, i was actually looking for a way to make my own rivets a week or two back. i found a different way but you are right, this would be a really good way for making them too. Thanks for the helpful advice!

Glen What is the pen your marking with ? I've heard the guys talking about something like this .Thx Ray
@gstongs6 жыл бұрын
Ray, That pen I use around the middle of the video is a paint pen / marker - good for marking steel. Most craft supply stores should sell these. I also use talc sticks to mark work but it wears off easily and is much less visible. But the talc sticks can mark work when it's hot whereas you would destroy the paint pen's felt tip if used on hot work. Thanks for watching.

What would have been wrong with a simple hinge at the end? I feel like you've made this far more 'involved' and open to inaccuracies than it needs to be. Regards Mark in the UK
@paulanderson19156 жыл бұрын
thecorbies This happens to be the way the man chose to make it. Didn’t see too many blacksmithing videos on your channel.
@gstongs6 жыл бұрын
Mark, I actually thought about a hinge but for me personally, I thought that might not be as easy (though I guess this depends on which style hinge). I also felt a hinge, at least a hinge that I make, might not be as accurate as far as lining up the top and bottom pieces. But you're right, some sort of hinge would be perfectly fine. Just put the two pieces of material next to each other and drill a hole through on the joint. I think this will be much faster and no gas used.
@gstongs6 жыл бұрын
Pieter, I was going to drill with one price on top of the other but I only use a hand drill and thought that if I skew to one side this would be exaggerated over the longer drilling distance. Also, I needed to make this hole square in order to keep the pieces aligned when using. But I guess I could also have drilled both ends... Thanks.
@pieterbotes89386 жыл бұрын
