The distance between the front of the tong and the rivet could be a little longer on this tong - give it a bit more throat. Thanks.

This tong works but the distance from the front end to the rivet could've been a little longer - would have made it easier to size for this larger stock. Thanks.

The only thing I think you should try is to set the boss further back and allow a little more throat. The way they are now you can only grab the very end, and you may need/want a deeper grip. Otherwise, a great video. Thanks for sharing.
@gstongs
@gstongs 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I do agree. If I made the distance between the front end and the rivet just a little longer, it would've made sizing this tong for larger stock easier. As it is, it holds well enough but if the stock were able to insert just a bit more, it could've been better. Thanks.

Glen, what kind of pen is that you wrote on the metal with? Brand name and type? Here in the states I have never seen a pen nor marker than can write on metal and not be removed immediately in the forge. Maybe my forge is over-oxidizing? It gets very hot and quickly though. Anywho, please comment back about that pen lol
@stevemoore5053

Yes Glen great video. I myself would like to know about the pen as well. Thanks in advance.
@erikcourtney1834
@erikcourtney1834 4 жыл бұрын
Pro-line HT and dykem (I believe) are brands that I know of that are good to 2,000f+ degrees. If your getting oxidation inside your forge you need to either add more fuel or cut down on the air flow. Shouldn’t scale inside, but once pulled out it’s going to no matter what you do.
@gstongs
@gstongs 4 жыл бұрын
It's a paint pen - the kind with a tiny ball bearing inside that you shake. And yes, it holds up very well with heat. Snowman is the brand and they are made in Japan. They cost about $2 each. If you ever need a tong or something I sell, I can include a pen or two for free other wise, the shipping cost would make it not worth it. Thanks.

Have you considered using a slot punch instead of round punch to punch the holes in the tongs to leave more meat on the sides?
@gstongs
@gstongs 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I did try for time to use a small slot punch then drift round but it never worked out for me. Need to revisit that. Also, I need to make myself a new round punch as this one is very old and tired. I usually turn old, shortened round punches into drifts. Maybe would make a decent video... Thanks.

Love watching you work. You have so many tools for your trade (craft art) and know to use them. Do you make many tongs for farriers? Being interested in horses, I'm interested in horseshoeing. The old time blacksmiths sure knew a lot, didn't they?
@gstongs
@gstongs Жыл бұрын
Hi and thanks for watching. I do make farrier style flat tongs though they're not exclusively for farriers. Without KZbin, etc. the old timers were sure doing some incredible work.

At 14 min in the video, would a large welding magnet work to hold the placement, instead of holding it Cheers from Canada
@gstongs
@gstongs 4 жыл бұрын
It might but I usually like to avoid having a magnet touch workpieces since if they get a little magnetized, scale and other bits of steel will stick to the workpiece. Thanks.
