In todays video I show you around the engine internals and try and trace what exactly has gone wrong. I suspect a mixture of low oil pressure and bad workmanship. I'd be interested to here what you have to say in the subject too

Cheers! You got such a big positive attitude, we differ on the taste of the gen since I love the 4th gen ST185

Cylinder 3 on the 3SGTE in known to run the hottest and usually if there's a failure it on No 3. People say if fitting and EGT sensor to put it in the runner for that cylinder

Going off some things I've seen, I think who ever has rebuilt the engine has reused the head bolts. Technically they can be reused but are a major pain to re use. If the same ones are reused and over torqued when they may be stretched already can cause a major imbalance causing lots of wear internally, even between the combustion chambers. Because of the wear from left to right it's almost as if they were tightened left to right and torqued hand tight.

The bolts were noticably different torque when removing them so totally agree this engine never saw a torque wrench

In the 90's my 1985 Celica engine had crank and piston failure due to poor previous owner servicing and lack of oil changes. A couple of days after buying and serving the car engine went BANG. Con rod got bent. Rebuilt it and it ran perfectly with reground crank, bearings and new con rod. Replaced piston rings and clutch at same time. Also the rose pickup for the oil in the sump needed a good clean. Chain drive tensioner was also serviced with new seal and cleaned. I flushed my block and head several times in degreaser and clutch cleaner. Looks like your engine was poorly rebuilt without checking the whole engine before reassembly.

It's definitely had a bad rebuild. Will be up and running in no time 😊

Those bearing shouldn’t spin, they’ve got locking tabs on them which loc against the cap (on the Conrod bearing) and the conrod on the cap bearing. They’re designed so they can’t spin and for it to fail so quickly after the rebuild is very suspicious, I would say there was no oil in it or low pressure. Maybe they started it without oil by mistake

I can see the locking tab. The bearings been munched. I agree maybe assembly lube wasn't used

Interesting videos, thanks for making them. I think you are probably underestimating the money involved to do this properly. I'd also get everything measured properly before you put it back together. Look forward to seeing the coming videos. :)

I fear you're giving the previous builder too much credit. I'd wager they started the engine without any oil in it, then remembered, uttered some expletives, filled it with oil, shrugged and sent it on it's way!

going to be honest ... bin the engine ... all of it ... the oil pump is probably scored so add that to the rebuild ... you can pick up a full engine and gearbox for less than a grand ... if you want to rebuild the engine you will need to have the block cleaned the block will need the head bolt threads checked ... i would recommenced studs not bolts ...you have opened a big can of worms ... journals on the cams ... what about the cam caps ... my opinion ... bin it spend a bit of time on the forums and fb forums loads of help and loads of parts that you can use if you want to go down the rebuild route
