Context: During the shakedown of the 996 RSR on the Paul Ricard circuit, pro driver Emmanuel Collard encountered a 991 GT2 RS. Due to time constraint we had to engage the RSR (on slick tires) in the same session than various Porsche 911 GT3, GT3 RS, Audi R8 V10, Lamborghini Huracan. While the comparison between race cars and sports cars is pointless, it was fun to see the GT2 RS is pulling very very fast in the straights and is much faster than anything else. Until a technical corner like the double right hander of Le Beausset shows the car's limits. Despite being an early '00s race car, the 996 RSR is more planted and faster through this corner. And of course the soundtrack is much better on the RSR ;)
991 GT2 RS: road tires, 700hp for 1,470kg dry
996 RSR: slick tires, around 450hp for 1,100kg (Le Mans GT class)
Lap time wasn't the goal, rather we wanted to test that all the work carried this winter in our garage was properly done. The car was completely stripped out and verified: engine, gearbox, brakes, suspensions. A shakedown at Paul Ricard with a pro driver is a good way to make sure your car is ready for the next racing season. Emmanuel Collard knows these cars well too, having won the GT class at Le Mans in 2003 on the Alex Job Racing 996 GT3-RS! You can see Collard wasn't pushing it to the limits, even getting his hands out of the steering wheel to make sure the car drives straight. Enjoy the onboard cam!
