Duck and cover may not do much, but it raises your chances from abysmal to minimal- duck to *maybe* avoid the initial shockwave, which is what usually vaporizes people, and cover to protect yourself from falling debris. What they don't tell you is remain stationary UNDER the rubble to minimize fallout/radiation exposure, which is most potent in the first 24-48 hrs, then move FAST to continue minimizing exposure to fallout
