GTA IV is a cult following. Not everyone understands it. But we love it. Thanks man I'm glad I found it.

You're welcome, and It's true that not everyone understands IV! It's strange considering the fact that it's one of highest rated and sold games ever, yet the story side of it is so underappreciated.

Thanks, yeah I think a lot of people were wrong about this game at the time. More and more people are looking back positively on GTA IV now though.

Bro I love these last 2 vids you've made. Have you played fallout new vegas? If you haven't you totally should. Edit: imo Franklin and Luis are similar bc they both stay loyal to there childhood gangbanger friends and will always help them out but because they both want to branch out to bigger things than their initial hood upbringing, those same friends give them shit bc they're all stuck in that hood mentality (i.e. Armando & Lamar) and refuse to see F and L's greater vision for a future.

Thank you! And yes, I've played a lot of New Vegas. If GTA IV is my favorite game, Fallout New Vegas would easily be my second favorite. I agree with your points on Lois and Franklin. They're very similar characters but I think prefer Franklin. It's a small detail but I really like the reveal that Franklin's Aunt's house was actually Franklin's Mom's house the whole time. His Aunt was just acting like she owned the place, always asking Franklin to leave HER house. When in reality Franklin grew up in that house. It's a small detail but I prefer his character because of those smaller details.

Just a suggestion as a viewer who loves GTA4 / all Rockstar games. I came to your videos looking for GTA4 video essays, and I found your video, brilliantly describing the GTA4 plot points, connections to reality, etc... I had assumed you were a much bigger KZbinr by the way you were connecting points, but just now I realized you don’t really do video essays. Not sure if it’s the pure time you’ve committed to this game, but your analysis is very high level, and I recommend that you make more video essays! Tldr: your video essay format videos are super good, make more on different games!!

Thank you, glad the video worked for you. Just like you said, I wanted to see more GTA 4 analysis/video essays, but I was surprised to see that there weren't many of them on youtube. I was thinking "why is this game's story so underrated?" So at some point I just decided to do it myself. I appreciate what you said about the video essay format. I feel that a lot of video essays out there can be manipulative in how they present their points. I see a lot of videos with bad arguments backed up by deceptive cutscene/gameplay footage that doesn't show the whole context. I wanted to do something more straight forward and transparent with links in the description. My production quality is definitely lower, haha, but I can promise that if I do improve production quality in the future, the improvisational approach with links to sources will remain. It's the only way I can do this sort of thing. I can't do it scripted. I'll never be Joseph Anderson. I love Joseph Anderson, I think his content is great, but I just don't want to do that sort of thing, it's not me.

I know i'm late, but what do you think of Red dead redemption 2?
@BrokerCast5 жыл бұрын
I think it's much better written than GTA V. Some of the decisions they made with the game design were a little off but it's an excellent game overall and it might be my favorite game of this console generation. The thing that I kept thinking about when I was playing the game was how Rockstar incorporated elements from every one of their games in RDR2. The stats and survival systems reminded me of GTA SA, a lot of the environmental details like Arthur's journal (a stroke of genius btw, I wish Niko Bellic had a journal in IV) and the various objects you could pick up and examine reminded me of LA Noire's game style, the restrictions on how many weapons you could carry reminded me of Max Payne 3 and the meaningful story about a man coming to terms with his life reminded me of GTA IV. Add on top of that the the obvious things that returned from RDR1 and were carried over from their last game GTA V and the game honestly feels like an amalgamation of the company's past work. It's a landmark game for Rockstar and maybe video games in general... But it's definitely not above criticism either. I'm still not sure how I feel about Mikah as a villain, to be honest I can't really tell if he's well written villain or not. Mikah's motivations still aren't completely clear to me and sometimes when he shows up in the story it feels a little too convenient, especially at the end with Arthur. I want to replay it but it's such a long game that it's kept me from going back. The epilogue on its own feels like DLC and I give huge credit to Rockstar for making that because they didn't have to but at the same time, I felt like the game was dragging a little at that point. The mission design and the shooting just got boring after a while, something about it felt off. I think they were trying to make the shooting feel a little bit like the Last of Us with how the crosshairs kind of move around when you're aiming. You're aim is never really steady and it encourages you to shoot while you're standing or crouching and not so much while you're moving, unless you're using deadeye. I think that's one thing I did like about RDR1 more, you could move around more while shooting without as many penalties to accuracy. I also think deadeye was better handled in RDR1 because I feel like you die a little quicker in that game and that gave deadeye more of a purpose. It's good for clearing hard rooms and forts, it's good for when you're being overwhelmed by enemies and in that way it's a little more like Max Payne 1-3, it's meant to be used strategically. In RDR2, I used it but I almost used it more as a crutch because the shooting was so weird. It's like you're moving the crosshairs through butter and it just never felt quite right. You also have the horse riding which, tbh I do prefer RDR1's horses. 2's are more realistic but you can fall off of your horse and run into trees and though that was funny at first, it became annoying to me after a while. Flying through the windshield in GTA IV never bothered me because there wasn't that much stuff to run into, compared to riding a horse through the woods, it can be a nightmare if you're not on the road. In RDR1 you couldn't fall off of your horse, it was basically impossible unless you flew off of a cliff. The horses were also a lot faster in the first game and you could whistle them to you anywhere on the map. It almost reminds me of Breath of the Wild in that Rockstar was trying to make open worlds more interesting by making them more frustrating and adding "realism" to shake up the experience but some of that just feels like busywork to me, like when you're skinning animals. I like stories that take themselves seriously but I don't give a damn about ludonarrative dissonance or "realism" or whatever, making the game fun matters more to me because I don't have any problems suspending my disbelief. So yeah, at the end of the day. I think RDR2 has a better story and maybe protagonist? I can't decide if I like Arthur or John more... But the actual gameplay of the first game is just a lot more fun. Though to play devil's advocate, you could argue that RDR1 is more of a GTA clone with horses, while RDR2 feels more like its own thing. So I can respect Rockstar for trying to give Red Dead more of an identity that's different from GTA by adding more realism and whatnot, but it's just not really to my preferences. That said, it's still one of my favorite games ever and it serves as an excellent companion piece to the original. And that's one of my favorite things about Red Dead 2, is that it made me love the first game even more than I did before. After finishing 2 I had to replay the original right away and it's an even more powerful experience because the groundwork laid in the prequel. And that's all I could've ask for in a prequel.

Your opening is way too self critical. If that's a trait of yours in life, watch out bother. Kill those thoughts right now if you haven't already
@BrokerCast Жыл бұрын
I haven't rewatched this video since I made it, but yeah I probably was. Being too self critical is a huge mistake because it's not showing mercy to yourself that you would show others. So that kind of self hate disguised as a sort of false humility can be extremely dangerous. Took me a few years to learn that lesson though.

I think the world's decent, not as detailed as 4 but it's got a good layout and all that however the thing I hate about GTA 5 is the characters, not just the main 3 I mean fucking everyone is so fake and unlikeable... They all have the same parody of American life personality and it's so boring
