There's an entire lifetime of kids born past 2003 that have never played any of these games, their parents never played these games, and they have no idea what a "grand theft auto" is. And thats only because I have the xbox game pass for PC and its available via that lol That, and FH5 actually turned out to be a pretty damn good game. As a former game tester, I can tell you exactly what happened. The assets where AI upscaled, and likely had few people (if not one person) do a simple quality check. Basically to check if the AI needs to be tweaked, but nothing too comprehensive. So just make sure the texture quality is consistent all around but not checking them in game. More than likely just viewing the raw data without any context. Same goes with the animations and rigging. The QA team, is then told by the producer(s) to not write up bugs about the animations or textures, and to only focus on game stability and progression. They'll be told that the developers (ie: the people looking at the raw data) will handle any major issues with animations or textures the tester may encounter. Everything else is considered legacy and the developers are not going to fix any legacy bugs. So anyone who writes up a texture or animation bug will have their bug closed and labeled as "Not a Bug" or "Will Not Fix" by either the QA lead or the producer(s).

Former SEA (Support and Engagement Associate), but we did some QA stuff as well. Can confirm that much of this checks out. Likewise, some of the texture data most likely was checked individually rather than as a whole. This is why you have the infamous 9/7 shirt: the two textures, separate, appear correct, but together as a material makes no sense. So what little was even checked on it wasn't checked in an ideal situation.

That's all they want so that consumers can just get excited for the next product providing more bucks for a short uneventful bang. Replay value for the main storyline has virtually vanished in my opinion. GTA V and RDR2 never got their singleplayer story add-ons as previously mentioned despite fans desires & wishes. Data miners were even able to find a zombie apocalypse setting within GTA V, which could've made it as exciting as 'Undead Nightmare' was for RDR.

Except none of the issues presented in the video and blamed on AI could ever be done by an AI. Text put through AIs turns out squiggly and weird because AIs don't rewrite text, they redraw it, so that tells me those images with the typoes and etc were all made from scratch by a human. AI upscalers have nothing to do with 3D geometry like Ryder's arm or the pool. And they definitely have nothing to do with the *new* ped variants, like the new numbers on the back of the jerseys, which is code error, not art error. This video is honestly infuriating as someone who loves remastering old content and uses AI upscaling on a daily. Please don't fall for the misinformation :/

The map is not only big, but also highly condensed. There's stuff to do everywhere (something GTAV severely lacked), however, removing the fog and other draw distance effects dramatically changes not only the feel of the game, but also the scale. It's the same exact problem the Silent Hill Remasters suffered from. Getting rid of these things isn't always a positive, they hide things the player was never meant to see, particularly the boundaries of the game world.

i can confirm what was said about increased emitter values and wrong normal maps. that definitely looks like what happened and are the kind of mistake you make at 3am after working for the past day and a half. ai scaling is a great tool but it won't be perfect, especially not when overused. the fact that people make fixes for it so quickly really highlights how little time was put into making the game.

I am learning to become a 3D Artist and I remember joking to my friends that all people have to do to remakes is take all the models and subdivide all the models to make them higher poly. Obviously, I was joking because it could heavily strain performace and models could look much worse than the originals depending on how models may have been constructed, both of which have occurred here potentially explaining the appaling framerate drops and the low quality models.

You want to know a trilogy port that i enjoyed? Ratchet and Clank HD Collection. It added wide-screen, 1080p and everything else to modernize it to make it high def. Thing is, there were visual glitches that were pretty glaring when they showed up, like some clipping issues in cutscenes that weren't present before and Ratchet's helmet being sized up for some reason, but the gameplay is pretty intact. If the definitive edition only had these bugs, fine, as long as people have a more convenient option to play these games on modern platforms. But come on, this is atrocious. Although, a really good port of a trilogy that I have is the Jak and Daxter trilogy for ps3. The only thing I have noticed is a punch glitch that occasionally, randomly makes you lunge in a different direction when punching, but it's probably one of the best ways to play it.

Most remasters are poorly done ports, then they make some changes but mostly because it's controversial stuff they either remove/change because it would offend people today. A remaster to me would be a ground-up game in the newest engine and graphics. All of the back-end work is done for story writing and such.

What is truly frightening is that we are starting to accept AI upscaled media in courts of law now as evidence as well, just watched a trial where the prosecution successfully got such evidence issued into evidence, with a bunch of partisans in the comments claiming "AI can't add anything to a picture that isn't in the original" yet here we are. Technology is kind of turning into a dystopian nightmare at this point....not the tech itself, but tech mixed with increasing human laziness.

This is why playtesting is so important to the game making process, the developer should be playtesting every change they make whether through code or even if it is just changing some dude's shirt to a differn't shade of green. All builds need to be playtested by a playtesting unit. The game dev process from start to finish is slow, but when rushed you get results like this.

EA has actually been quite good with their remastered games, such as the Mass Effect Legendary Edition and Command and Conquer Remastered to name a couple. Both have their share of issues sure, but more in the vein of "minor game release issues fixed after a couple of patches", rather than "raging dumpsterfire". EA also doesn't go after modders, so fans are free to fix their games however they want.

As a vfx artist too, i can confirm most of what that email said might be true. On the rain though i dont recall PS2 having support for modern distortion effects. In all likelihood this is either a transparency issue caused by the upscaling incorrectly reproducing the opacity or the mobile version they appeared to use not supporting motion blur on particles. Motion blur would smudge out those milky particles. Also with the way bodies of water draw above the rain tells me there are transparency sorting issues too. These kinds of issues like jumbled textures, uvs and rendering artifacts remind me of what you see on games that are running on emulators that dont support certain hardware features of the original console. These remakes are a complete mess. Everyone deserves thier money back for a subpar product.

I might be able to a take a shot at the rain drop explanation. Depending on how they are emitted the particles might be affect by the resolution of the textures. If the ai upscaled the textures to a higher resolution it may have caused the rain textures to be way too oversized causing the milky look. For example, let's say the original rain textures were 16x32, if the ai upscaled them to double or even triple the resolution we are then talking 32x64 rain drop or even 48x96 per rain drop.

Simply said: they wrote basic RenderWare to Unreal Engine translation layer in a span of weeks (seems like it was single-person job) then imported original mission scripts, models, animations etc... from the original games (some of which are from old mobile ports made by GSG - the same company that did this mess)... then they upscaled the textures using AI... and boom, you've got all three games done in a span of a month or so if one would start from scratch. Edit: Corrected the engine name from Rage to RenderWare (Rage was used for newer GTAs and is made in-house by R*)

There's a pattern here lately with the AAA industry at large - they deliver a botched up release, people rightfully smear and talk shit at them, they go apologetically silent, again come up with something mediocre years later and the majority tend to yell, "yay ! return to greatness" at the top of their chest without sound judgment. Back in the day, when the splash screen said "Westwood Studios Proudly Presents" and the hell march music began playing with the opening of RA2, we knew that that this was a team who were proud of their product. That competitive spirit, passion and user satisfaction is long gone. It's all fame and notoriety game for the companies now.
