The name "MovieDemo" in and of itself implies it is a demo in the from of a....you guessed it....movie (video). What its purpose is could be anything, thats open ended unless some of the old devs show up here in the comments to explain why. but whatever the circumstance it was certainly meant to get investors on board or for the team to show the higher up's the progress that was made (physics and camera tracking work). Also could have been intended to be sent to the department that handles the TV commercials and could have been used as B-roll content to be filler for the commercials.
@CYPH3RsD0M41N2 жыл бұрын
My theory about this removed "mission" is that it was probably used as demo footage for some sort of kiosk for game conventions like PAX or E3. From the looks of it, it seems that there would've been audio files to go with it seeing as how most scenes extend more than others.

I disagree that this is a scrapped movie studio mission. The clue to what I personally think it is is in the name of the script itself - "movieDEMO"! You know - demo, the bit of gameplay that loads up when you don't don't do anything on the start screen that a lot of 90s and early 00s games had? It makes more sense this way. This is why the last scene is of Tommy and an unknown girl crash into an explosive barrels. A lot of demos at the time finished with a death of AI-controlled character as they were just to showcase the bit of gameplay. Still, really cool discovery, thank you Vadim as always.
@MrDmoney1562 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's actually true, i can see that being the case but of course given that the game has no start main menu and instead automatically loads up to gameplay they have no use for it or can't use it cuz of it.
@hidenfn2 жыл бұрын
MovieDemo was never intended to be a mission or to be tied to the movie studio, most developers usually do these as a test or as a template to get used to the cinematic coding structure, these also work as a test to make sure everything works correctly before they start doing missions that actually use them. Also, no way it was supposed to be used as an E3 demo or was used to show off to investors, it looks way too janky (they would just show game footage anyway, not cutscenes) and it’s most likely just a template or a test for the cinematic making system they used.
@hidenfn2 жыл бұрын
While they might use the footage for a trailer or whatnot, it wouldn’t work since it has a story-like structure which would not be seen in a trailer.

It's more likely that the mission was made just as a test so the developers could get a feel for how they were going to structure each cutscene. It's in the name, "MovieDemo". They probably referred to cutscenes as movies back then and the movie made here was just their demo to base every other movie around, hence why also the buggy nature of it along with a storyline that doesn't really make much sense and doesn't feature any gameplay. This is very common with developers who are currently learning the tools they're working with, as this is more or less a test to build familiarity. I'm probably not the first to think of this idea though.

I reckon this was a quick demo to show what they can do with the game when the game was early in development. Seems solid since some other devs did the same thing around the same time. Sonic Team made an “AutoDemo” for Sonic Adventure to show people what the game was a about when it was also early in development. AutoDemo and MovieDemo play very similarly, in that you’re watching a scripted “mission” play out all in real-time.
@Cheerybelle2 жыл бұрын
My first guess is that it was an early attract demo that would appear if you sat on the main menu for a little bit, or it could've been in place of the opening credits. Alternatively, it could be that it was a proof-of-concept for the potential of cutscenes, testing how elaborate and complex they could be, perhaps after some significant changes to the engine relevant to cutscenes. That said, other people are saying that it could've been intended as a demonstration for the game used to promote it at a con or expo or on their website, and that also makes sense.
This makes sense as we had similar mission in VCS.

Considering there's also a lot of broken code I don't think think we were meant to see each part of the scene play out but rather switch after reaching a certain part played out. Yes there's no other screen saying when Vice City is supposed to come out but the way it ends seems just to weird for a traditional cutscene for a mission especially if it's Tommy getting blown up. Considering the broken code and everything not exactly running smoothly and fluidly I do think this is a trailer.

Yeah, GSG has kinda impressed me with how bad they keep managing to screw up, though after watching Matt McMuscles’ video on them and their infamous “demasters”, I can’t help but feel a bit sorry for them given how Rockstar keeps placing them into really bad situations without much if anything at all in the way of help whenever they continually wind up in over their heads. It’s almost as if it’s a weird form of Stockholm Syndrome at this point given how they keep ruining my favorite game in the series, San Andreas. 😒

A completely different theory: Maybe a early pitch to a "movie maker" function in the game (like in GTA V). This is really far fetched and probably wrong, but wouldn't be the first feature that was implemented way before it was seen in a release title (e.g. online multiplayer, first person mode etc.)

To me, this was just used to demonstrate the engine's scripting capabilities.

I personally think it might have just been some sort of in game engine cutscene test
