Depth Perception Science wrong. About 75% depth cues are monocular which means it only requires one eye. Relative Motion, Height, Clarity, and Size are all only require one eye. Interposition and Texture Gradient also only require one eye. Retinal Disparity requires 2 eyes. Depth Perception is part of new borns as shown by the visual cliff test.

18:10 You lose depth perception when you close one eye, but the brain tries to compensate using monocular cues (such as perspective, occlusion, texture gradients, etc.). You can test that by yourself: close one eye, extend an arm out with a pen, remove the cap, bring it to your side and then try to place the cap back on the pen (try it with different heights, angles and also with both eyes open). 37:38 That whiteboard was basically brainstorming for the game development. In particular, Z-clipping (or depth clipping) refers to techniques that selectively render certain scene objects based on their depth relative to the screen.

18:10 When you cover up one eye, you lose _binocular vision._ You don't lose depth perception. Now, granted, binocular vision is a large part of depth perception, but it's not the _only_ factor. There are other methods, such as parallax motion and relative size, that the brain can use to figure out how far away something is. 18:58 I'm going to have to disagree here. Binocular vision only works out to about 20 feet/6 meters or so, so beyond that, the _only_ way to judge distance is by these other cues. If you're driving, it doesn't matter* if one eye is covered up or not, you can still judge depth just as well as you could with two eyes. *Because I know that _some_ overly-pedantic individual is going to chime in, I'm going to clarify that I'm only talking about depth perception. Having two eyes helps in other ways, such as peripheral vision, having better resolution, etc. So, you really shouldn't be driving around with one eye closed, especially at night.

On the topic of depth percesion. I have issues with it, though I have it, because one of my eyes had a infection that left a scar on it. With most day to day stuff it doesn't impact me but when it comes to things like driving, when seeing oncoming traphic, I have to take more time to judge it and intentionally look for context clues to see how far people are from me and how fast they are going. I have had friends actually complain that I am WAY TOO CAUSIOUS of a driver, but I tell ya, after it happened for a month or so, I had too many close calls.

I’m half blind in my right eye, no depth perception without glasses. I can only explain it like this: I’m not stupid, I know the wall infront of me is about 8 feet away, but if you have me look out the window at the trees, if all I can see are the tops of them with the leaves, not the bases where I can see where they stand, I have no idea which ones are in our yard and which are down the street. Also say I’m walking down a hallway with tables on either side of me, I’ll probably hit the one on the right, because it’s about six inches closer than I think. I know where things are in my house, but blindfold me and take me into someone else’s house and then take the blindfold off...I’ll have to walk around slower because I’m not exactly sure how far away something is.........that is until I look down at my feet, because then I can tell “hey my feet are this long, I have walked three steps, I am this much closer to the couch, so two and a half more steps will get me to the couch”. I will say though at stores I have to walk with my right arm outstretched a bit, fingers hanging limp, and let my fingers slightly touch the shelves in order for my brain to say “okay so the shelf is there, I thought it was four more inches away”. I wear glasses though and I can properly tell distance, so driving is no issue for me at all. But yeah I’m not stupid, I know the world isn’t flat (lawl), I know the fridge isn’t just a poster, it’s a thing with shelves and the shelves are about a foot and a half deep. Hope this clears it up, even though no one will ever read this comment. Have a wonderful day :) ask any questions ya want to in the replies I’ll check this comment randomly

I know someone with vision in only one eye, and they have very little depth perception. People with 20-20 vision really don't appreciate all the little things depth perception allows you to do. It can be as little as missing the bin when you put something in, to having the calculate the distance of a vehicle in front of you. Vision and depth perception is a gift.
