I fundamentally don’t get GTO. Onizuka is absolutely the lifeblood of this show and whether you like him makes or breaks it. I found him to be a perverted scumbag. The show tries SO HARD to show us he has good intentions yet they’re consistently undermined by his own actions. His entire motivation for to become a teacher was so he could court 16 year olds. It’s a truly awful premise. But perhaps he learns and becomes a better teacher over time?? Nope! He doesn’t care what people think, but by proxy he also never learns. He’s still a pervert for the teenagers he teaches and rather than becoming a better teacher, he becomes even more of a goofball as the show goes on The show tries to juggle slapstick humour with more serious themes like bullying, blackmail, even school terrorism at one point. It falls flat on its face every time. The repetitiveness of each student being easily forgiven and Onizuka being an unrelenting pervert who pulls a solution out of his ass at the last second never really changes. I will note that I only lasted 20 episodes before I gave up, so maybe some character development happens by the final arc! This show is a product of its time. But today it’s a comedy anime that is consistently unfunny and uncomfortable AND the animation sucks. There is so little to love here that I’m left completely confused over why it’s a beloved classic anime. This is a solid 2/10, I wish I liked it more
