The 4060 should have been what the 4060 ti is and the 4060 ti should have had a 160 bit bus with 10GB of vram and like 15% more cuda cores. Their thought process was "look how much of a generational improvement we have, let's just decrease the bus width of each card by 64 bits." It honestly didn't work out too badly for the 4070 ti and the 4070, but for some reason for the past 2 generations the bus width and the cuda core counts haven't scaled together. With Turing all the way back to Maxwell, the core counts and bus width scaled together, but for some reason, the 3070 ti, while having 2/3 the bus width of the 3090 ti, only had about 60% the number of cores, and the ratio was even worse for the 3060, which had 1/3 the number of cores while having 1/2 the bus width.

I bought a 1060 and a Ryzen 1600X for my daughter's PC way back when the 1060 launched, and it served her well for several years. The 2060 was a very nice step up. The only xx60 I would recommend to anyone today (Oct 2024) is a 3060 for an entry-level build. The 4060 isn't a bad GPU in a vacuum, but it is underpowered and lacks sufficient VRAM for its asking price. It will have a short life span. For a gaming GPU in 2024, 8GB of VRAM is the absolute bare minimum.

I remember when I got my first 1060. I was 15 and was saving up money for about a year, then when I bought it, it felt like a love story. Come to think of it, I was really pushing it to it's limit. I was modding games, getting new ones, last game I played on it was AC Odyssey. I had it in my system up till late 2022 when I got my 3080 ti (my worst purchase of my life by far). Honestly if you're gaming at 1080p and you're willing to lower SOME of those ultra to high (which honestly are barely noticeable while deep focusing ingame) you get consistently over 60FPS. Not worth the upgrade tbh. Rather wait for 5000 series.

Man... it looks like modern 60-class GPUs just don't scale nearly as well. Like 3 gens later I'd have expected at least 3.5x performance on average (probably more considering the hiked prices these days). We're looking at somewhere in the ballparks of 2.3x - 2.7x. Kind of dissapointing. I remember the 1060 being an efficient beast for it's time. Had one (got it for around $140 at the time). Most games I could run on high at 60FPS.

The tests were conducted incorrectly and in the wrong places. This applies to both God of War (testing should be done in battles and in open locations, not in a cave) and Silent Hill - the city is the most optimized place in the game at the beginning, so there are 60 fps. But at the beginning, tests should be conducted in the forest or in the parallel worlds of the Hospital and Residential Complex - there are 40 fps

Konami made well optimized SH2 on Unreal Engine 5. That new features in the game are mindblowing, shame on another developers. Playing it in 1440p with 4070s on max settings, that light, shadows are insane, very real. Also have 1650s and 2060s, the can run too well in 1080p. Surprised that 12400f is enough for this game and I think lower CPU can run too. 4070s in 1440p with RT 100% load with 12400f. Even 580 rx can run it at mid-max settings

4060 is really a 4050, they lowered the power consumption thanks to new architecture and barely any meaningful difference vs a 3060. Imagine a 4060 with the power consumption of a 3060 while benefiting of the new architecture, Nvidia really downgraded the entire GPU lineup by one tier with 4000 series. The only true 4000 GPU is 4090 and that's that.

The obscure 6GB version is OEM only. The 12GB version is by far the most common version of the 3060 which is why it's used in most tests. There is also an 8GB version which Nvidia released at the tail end of the 30-series run., but this card is less common and less known.

For long term I think go for the 3060 (VRAM), but if it's just for 2-3 years and you are moving up again, 4060 is the better choice, more modern features more efficient yada yada yada. How much is the 3070/3080 used in your country? I think those will be the better buy instead imo. And there is 0 stutters. Even when you go over 8gb limit while 3060 uses 12gb in not optimized games, there is no stutters, check in youtube any test. 4060 gets more fps even when 3060 uses 12gb.

@@av4up What? Last of us consumes 9GB at 1080p ultra and cyberpunk uses 8.3GB at ultra RT. Msi afterburner doesn't show higher usage because you don't have more memory.
