GTX 970 repairing phase or what could happen if you don't put radiator back video card repair

Most likely customer decided replace his thermal past which is a good thinking, but looks like didnt put radiator back. And that's what could happen, or might be just classic burnt out key which led to killing driver. Here you can also see how you can diagnose graphic card phases. Enjoy video)

this transistor (cant remember if its t21, t22, t23) is the high side switching transistor of the first phase, its known to fail alot on these cards (evga gtx 970) great video keep up the good work ^^

Eli I think you did excellent putting a radiator on the chips without. What puzzles me is how to get exactly the correct thickness. Even a millimeter or two will make the card fail. I think what I would do is put putty on the card, tighten down all the heatsink. Then using a micrometer measure the exact thickness needed. It will crack the solder balls if even slightly differentially pressured. Good job Eli.

Hey, great video! I also have a 970 and it keep freezing for like 1 or 2 seconds randomly (especially in busy areas) when I'm playing games. I figured it was a bad drivers, but it turns out that it's happening with every single driver I try. The temps don't go higher than 45° C. It's a shame. I don't know what's going on... Do you happen to know what's wrong with it? It'd be awesome if you could help me out. Thank you!

Sounds more like a hard drive or cpu problem

Freezing every 1-2 seconds means your thermal paste needs reapplying. It's bad. It got dried up or cracked or whatever and a connection isn't being made. Did you recently handle the card before this happened? That's usually all it takes on some very old paste.. pulling the card out and putting it back in. Your temps show super low because it's throttling super fast. Just put new paste on the core and you'll be good to go... if you still have the card. It's been 6 months. That's been my experience. I guess there's a million things that it could be... but yeah, monitor your clock speeds and just see if they are dropping a lot. For example, a STRIX 480 8GB should run at 1310mhz core but with the factory paste dried up after nearly 5-6 years, it would throttle to 500-700mhz even though the temps were in the 40's.

i have the same card that stooped working about a week back.(warranty over unfortunately) it did had the radiator part build in to the aluminium grid. i just wish i have some one like you near me so that the card can get fixed. it dose not have any obvious marks as you got but i'm pretty sure there is some part damaged or short.

I have Zotac 970 mini card that hit 83C when playing FC5 (everything at max and at 1920x1200), and I played it between 79-83C for hours and hours, no overclock. I go to shut off machine for a few days, then I go to turn it back on and it did not want to display. I had to wiggle the board a bit to get it to come on. Hope I didn't damage it. I haven't turned my comp off since then.

@@RoGie_B I believe you it works :D I repaired my old nVidia 6600GT this way. It had pretty bad artifacts even in 2D mode (since BIOS post). I removed all plastic elements, covered capacitors with aluminium foil and placed it in the oven for like 10min in 180C and it was alive. However, there is scientific proof of this method - because of ecological regulations, they use soldering alloy without lead. Lead was stabilizing structure of tin. Without lead, tin starts to form micro whiskers on the surface. Whiskers may create small shortcuts and case artifacts. Cooking can probably melt that wishers and bring card back to live. Second option - cold solder. It can also be melted and repaired

​@@RoGie_B Hey, I recommend using a liquid flux under the GPU and the memories of the GPU and put thermal pads on the memories to last longer, only in my experience because recently my GTX 760 4gb ACX returned to give artifacts only 6 months after resuscitating it in the oven without putting the flux or thermal pads.

@@chilledolay4065 Any N channel, low rdson, minimum 30V 50A mosfet will be fine. You can get the original from Mouser or Ebay, but you can desolder them from old gpus, and mobos too. If you are not sure just tell me the old and replacement fet number and I'll check it for you.

the card actually comes like this... mine died off of a shorted diode and i fixed it by desoldering the diode, but i dont have any replacement diodes and my card sometimes starts and sometimes doesnt for some reason :( but now its on so im gonna try to not stop my pc running and just let it sleep also can a gt 710 have any chips like that? i need that replacement chip :(

I would like to ask about the hot air station you are using,it looks like its doing very good job and the mosfet desoldered in very short time.I use a weller wma-1 but it is very small for these boards and i am intending to buy a new hot air and looking for something extemely powerful.Testing with furmark as a load seems like a rat sitting in the back of an elephant.

I have a Palit GTX 970 jetsream it does not display opened it up got it cleaned checked through all components nothing blown by the looks of it plugged it in while opened and started pc up placed my finger on chip it does start to get hot then pc gives me 2 short beeps and one long beeb and the chip cools off on gpu what else can I check? I have a EVGA GTX 970 SSC that just failed in a system. It does not even power up, gpu fans not spinning, or the power supply fan doesn't spin. Using 750w so not a power issue and been working for 1 year before failure.. It acts like a short on the power rail. My older GTX 770 works fine in that system. I tried the 970 in another system. With no luck. Any ideas?

For GPUs you can learn a lot from the channel "actually hardcore overclocking". There aren't publicly available schematics for GPUs so it's mostly just built up knowledge and being able to identify it when you see it. In this specific case the MOSFET was blown up and the damage was visible. For parts. They are mostly standard and have the part numbers printed on themselves. You can buy them on eBay or Digikey or other sites like that.

When a gpu doenst turn on and it got a short between +12v and ground then it probably has a bad mosfet(s).

My Zotac 970 gives black screen then the computer restarts when gaming or using Premiere Pro, I have to let it cool down for about an hour to work again. I did a lot of trouble shooting, and I'm certain it's the card since the situation improved a little after I underclocked below Nvidia stock clock, and now the black screens are less frequent. Some people recommend reballing the GPU itself by a BGA station. What do you think could be wrong?

I ended up canceling the rx580. the new MOSFET part number NTMFS4C10NAT1G is working for about 2 days. and the same thing happened. I replaced another one and order a dead card form eBay for 45. I didn't see a problem anywhere else, could be that the heating problem? the card didn't come with a radiator for these MOSFETs. guess I need to get some cooling down there.

I have a card on which the exact same mosfet caused a short. While I did not have the replacement parts available yet, I reasembled the card. After only removing this mosfet, the card works again. However performance is poor, the core clock is stuck at 135mhz due to the fact that the card has a wrong tdp/power reading of over 200% (apparently an issue which is more often seen on GTX600/700/900 Nvidea cards) Will these issues be solved by putting in the new mosfet and driver? It would be interesting to know if these shortcircuit and tdp issues are related. Maybe you/someone can answer from experience.

Looks like these damn FTW editions are ticking time bombs seems fixed after their refamp with the new PCB of the SSC edition 3rd card blew up last week and it was only 7 months between this one and the other one which i was lucky to get warranty for but 7 months later this PoS craps out again. This time no visual damage to see but i still think its one of the mosfets which has probably shorted. But i have no way of testing so i think about replacing all the mosfets (Qxx) and seeing if it fixes it lol

Recently when playing, my pc turned off and didnt want to start, i checked what happend, and it looks like something wrong with GTX 970 . And i discovered the source of problem, when i unplug both pins, the pc turns on, when i plug in the 6 pin IT turns on too, but when i plug in 8 pin, the pc turns off. Is there any way to fix this? small radiators are often worse then direkt airflow because of the small thermal isolation of the thermal pads ;)

I subsribed to your channel! Because suddenly my system got power cut off and cant turn back on. After every troubleshoot, i came to conclusion to take out my gpu and psu. So here is my story :D Gpu; msi gtx 970 4gb Psu; cooler master gx 750w I jumped start psu, just to check if its my is dead. So found no its not. I plug 6pin to my gpu, switch on psu, its still on. Ok. I plug 8pin to my gpu, switch on psu, its on then cut off. Theres a short at 8pin connector. Am i right?

Not recommended but if it's a pair of mosfets you're able to remove and it will work until you source a replacement Then a just a heat gun and Soldering iron can fix it
