Adapted from an episode from the literary classic, "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" (三国演义). "The Princess of Dong Wu" relates the follow up of a political marriage between the central characters Sun Shanxiang (孙尚香) of the state of Wu and Liu Bei (刘备) of the state of Shu.
The princess harbours aspirations of helping the two states forge an alliance against their common enemy and attain a win-win peaceful co-existence through the nuptial union. However, the leaders of the two states are blinded by their over ambitiousness and vengefulness. As a mere pawn in the tussle for power, the princess is powerless to see her dreams dashed.
A powerful script and first rate performance.
Ms Zhang Yihuang (张怡凰) was awarded the coveted 2007 Plum Blossom Award (中国戏剧梅花奖) for her sterling performance as the Princess of Dong Wu.
The outstanding script by Fan Shaxia (范莎侠) also received the prestigious Cao Yu Award (曹禺剧本奖).
