Kaiping is my family’s hometown. We are the Guan Clan and my great-grandfather migrated to California in the late 1800’s. He traveled back to Kaiping up until the 1920’s. My grandfather soon followed and had 13 children born and raised in Los Angeles. We now have up to 180 aunts, uncles, and cousins representing 6 generations of the Guan Clan. I have visited Kaiping to pay homage to my ancestors and to see where my grandfather was born.

You could be my distant relative ! 😁 I did not have the luck to visit Kai Ping. However, Guan spelling is usually used in the Latin countries. Kan and Kwan are more commonly used in the U.S., G.B. and Canada.

@@user-xm1lx8gl4d : our family now recognizes the pinyin spelling of our surname. American birth certificates read it as Quan.

@@priscillaferguson267 I thought, the hospital would take the name from the parents' documents to name the child.

@@user-xm1lx8gl4d : when my grandfather settled in San Francisco in 1919 as he entered the country all his documents were written in Chinese characters. When he was questioned going through immigration the clerk spelled the name in English as Quan. Therefore all legal documents therefore have been written in this manner. However about 15 yrs ago several members of our family elected to change the spelling reflecting a pinyin pronunciation and spelling and changed it to Guan.
