Have heard plenty of War Stories about how bad the ZD 30 is supposed to be from people who have never owned one . From all the people who actually do own them and take care of them I am yet to find anyone who has had out of the ordinary maintenance issues . I am on my second and touch wood , no issues on either . I think the reputation came from some of the very early ones

Good morning. I am in France. My ZD 30 from 2003 now has 350,000 kilometers on it. I bought it 14 years ago, it had 150,000 kilometers and a very good service history. I had change the 4 injectors around 200,000 kilometers for prevention. Since then, the alternator has been changed around 300,000. He's my big daddy, I'm a fan of him! Greetings from France

I maintain a fleet of over 20 mini fuel tanker Nissan Atlas trucks. They carry around 1800kg of fuel when full and tow a trailer with a further 1500kgs of weight behind each of them. We have contracts all over Western Australia supplying a wide range of customers with fuel for their equipment. Majority of the fleet are double shifted covering 500kms to 700kms per shift. Some are doing 6000ks each week and alot of that time are pulling over 3 tonne in payload. All have the ZD30 engines. Each truck is serviced every 2 weeks by that time theyve done between 10-12,000kms. We use high quality penrite 5w40 HPR oils and donaldson filters. The majority of the fleet are 2012-13 and ex imports. We try and keep them in service for atleast 4 years before changing them out for another one. Alot are doing 250 to 300,000kms a year depending on workloads and double shifting. Weve had minor issues with these engines, gearboxes and diffs. We do replace the injector seals every 150,000kms aswel as getting the injectors serviced. Being dusty conditions each service consists of engine oil, oil, fuel and air filters replaced each service. Diff and gearbox oils changed every 80,000kms. Coolant every 150,000kms when injector seals are replaced. Weve had 8 trucks clock 1,000,000kms on original running gear and another 4 due to hit that number in the next few month's. Once they hit their 4 years of service they are decommisioned and tanker n pumps transplanted onto a fresh import. By the time they reach the 4 year million km mark the cabs are rattly from all the off road corrugations and abuse over the year and river crossings all take their toll on the suspension and chassis. Some engines do fail on the way but generally weve seen nothing short of 600,000kms out of our fleet. However oils, coolant are checked daily and servicing is always done at 10 to 12,000kms which is pretty much every 2 weeks. We do regularly clean the maf sensors every service aswel as install boost limiting systems as these engines can at times over boost melting pistons. Oil catch cans are installed to limit the heavy breathing these engines are known for aswel as the EGR systems being blocked off. We also delete the DPF system and install a free flowing 3 inch exhaust system. These are all done as soon as we purchase a new truck before it goes out into service. We believe doing these things has made these engines a super reliable option for our business Service intervals: Every 10-12,000kms: Engine Oil, Oil, fuel and Air filters replaced Every 80,000kms: Diffs and Gearbox oils changed Every 150,000kms: Coolant replaced, Waterpump replaced, EGR cooler replaced, injector seals and injectors serviced. Radiator and hoses replaced. 300,000kms Turbo replacement Remember these are "working" trucks so our service and replacement of parts are alot more geared to being proactive maintenance as we don't want breakdowns out in the outback

Nice one Tim, 400,000km is testament to your meticulous maintenance practice. P.S I personally think high EGT’s are the biggest killer of these engines, and keeping EGT’s under control by having a gauge and installing the big intercooler are the best reliability mods you’ve done.

Have seen American trucks melt the car battery from the exhaust manifold being piping hot, with all the heat having nowhere to go when the engine is turned off. In petrol cars it can cause the fuel in the rail to boil, increasing the chance of a fire.

Great stuff Tim. It's good to show that not all cars are always equal in terms of maintenance, and thats the biggest threat to the life of any engine. Not flogging the hell out of it helps too. The ZD30 has been much maligned, but there are still a ton of them out there still running strong. There will always be cars that you regret letting go of, and for me it was my 05 Gu ST Cab Chassis, with the venerable TD42. That was such a great car, and I still regret moving it on. Maintenance is the key to longevity. There is no doubt about that, I bought a 1986 Land Cruiser BJ 60 from the original owner 20 years after purchase. He had all the service records, and everything was done on time according to Toyota's recommendations, and there were no engine or drive train related failures during that time. As there was little interest due to the mileage of 980 000 km, I was able to pick it up for next to nothing, as a parts vehicle. Amazingly, it ran fine and went on for another 50 000 km, all without any synthetic oil of any kindi its entire life. Ultimately It was sold to someone who was aware of its history but wanted an inexpensive project vehicle, I often wonder if it's still running ot there somewhere.

Hi Tim. I'm about to buy a 2005 Terrano II 3.0 di automatic transmission vehicle, whose general structure I like, and if I'm not mistaken, they also have the ZD30 coded engine. Almost all of them have figures between 300 000 km - 400 000 km. I believe that this refutes the claim that the ZD30 is a short-lived and problematic engine as it is thought to be. I will buy one of these by having both the engine and the automatic gearbox checked by a mechanic, and I wonder how many more kilometers it will travel with regular maintenance. I trust ZD30.

Gday mate Yeah, the ZD30 does get a lot of bad feedback. Mostly the years between 2000-2003 were the bad years but 20 + years later people still say they are unreliable. Mine has over 408000ks on the clock and still going strong. Good maintenance is the key as I mention my oil and filter changes in my videos. You’ve done the right thing by having it checked out by your mechanic. Hopefully your Zd30 will go for many years to come. Cheers Tim.

It's still looking great at 400K. It shows how well you look after it. Do you every worry about something failing on a trip away into remote Australia, with that many K's on the clock ? I mean something like an alternator, wheel bearings, universal joint, or a water pump failure ?? When those big distances are achieved, surely somethings can be expected to fail and it might happen in a remote location.

Yeah Tim all the war stories came from the early ZD by the time the CRD happened things had smoothed out . Had a friend of mine that had to lift a head at 480 and still hone marks in cylinders. Unfortunately damaged was done in early years and poor understanding of what killed the engine in first place. Sadly for some not rectifying the issue lead to a second failure.

Don't forget to clean and regrease things like to driver door hinges, bonnet latch and boot hinges. White lithium is popular. Use graphite powder for the keyhole insert if that is getting fatigued. You can also use a rubber rejuvenating paste on door window rubbers that also acts like sunscreen for rubber. Its the little things

Hello Bro Tim, I am happy to see your GU Patrol in such pristine condition and performing strong. Your oil/filter change interval is absolute commandment for any diesel powered vehicle. I also like your hat very much. I had been driving petrol powered Honda SUV and have driven to the Himalayas 3-4 times where I figured out that i need low end grunty torque at low rpms. That is when i decided to go for a robust diesel vehicle and purchased the Merc OM616 derived diesel-turbo powered 2.6 Litre engine sold here in India by Force Motors called Gurkha. I have been following the 5k kms or 6 months oil/filter change routine. Do you ever recommend flushing out the old engine oil using flush-additives before putting in new oil ? To comply with the emission norms prevalent in India my Gurkha comes fitted with the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), but the relief is that i do not need to fill adblu or urea in any separate tank. All my OM616 engine needs is clean diesel. I follow the warm-up and cool-down at engine-start and before switching off the engine as you had mentioned for minimum 1 to 2 minutes. Gurkha is the only vehicle in India having both front & rear differential-locks, would love to hear about the diff-locks utility in Australia from you. Have a great time out in the wilderness, Sushil, India.
