Please share this video. The writing is on the wall. The long term effects of the closure may be detrimental to the sharks on the Pacific Coast. What many folks don't realize is that great white sharks have a very long sexual maturity timetable. By taking out the largest females, you will see the effects a decade down the road. This is not opinion as much as it's understanding the path that is likely coming due to the out of control illegal fishing industry.

Is there anyway with your contacts to reach Discovery? some of the leading biologists are always on for white sharks like Chris Skomal I think his name is.... but Paul Degelder is a big shark conservationist. I like to think that with the way discovery loves their shark week money every year, maybe they would see this as a loss to their profits and get more attention on it. I am not a Twitter guy or anything like that I did Facebook a long time ago and even that took me a long time so I don't know the Twitter trends or anything but like I said before with your contacts, and simply just your own presence in the subculture of shark conservation and research I would like to hope that seeing this would work and these big fish in the world of big fish would be GREAT to get this message out there quickly and thorough

When pieces of bait fish are tied to nylon rope, how does the nylon fibers effect the special digestive system of the White Shark? (Check out their anatomy, if you're not aware 37:00 minutes into this video): kzbin.info/www/bejne/j4mXe5dqd5J4jNE NYLON FIBER IS NOT DIGESTABLE. And must be regurgitated, because NYLON FIBERS WILL NOT DISSOLVE IN STOMACH ACID, AND THEREFORE WILL NOT PASS THROUGH THE NARROW SPIRAL INTESTINAL TRACT. Which is not a tube capable of passing solid materials (like our own), a White Shark's spiral digestive tract can only pass liquid. Bones and other animal materials that the stomach acids do not liquefy, must be regurgitated. Which is a natural part of many fish's existence. However, with the nature of nylon fiber being what it is, fibers could very easily get hung up in the contents of a White Shark's stomach. And/or snag something in the gills, pallet, or teeth; when the shark attempts to puke. Imagine trying to vomit a tangled clump of rope! Is the practice of chumming bad? I don't like it. Is tricking a White Shark into ingesting nylon fiber worse than chumming? As stated above, I believe it's much worse than chumming. So justifying baiting White Sharks in front of a camera with a nylon rope, as opposed to chumming, is no justification at all. It should be banned as well. Maybe a short leader made of digestible pig-intestines, tied to the bait would be a better alternative.

We need Paul Watson style of attacks against shark finning. I've seen the baby and large sexually mature females that give birth in the Sea of Cortez Paul Walker RIP you found it my friend. I've seen at least a dozen shows showing that these ppl will do anything to make money bc if you're not born in 23 families that rule Mexico your poor. So it won't take long to wipe out the GW population. Communist don't care about ecosystems The Soviet union drained an entire Sea that was full of food. To divert the rivers that fed the sea to crops instead. We all need to be good shepherds to our environment and its animals.

I agree with almost everything you have said with the exception that boats throwing scented lures ( tuna heads ) doesn’t affect the sharks, rather than staying away from boats and people it’s attracting the sharks to something that naturally they would ignore / avoid. If there was no tuna then the shark has no need to stay around the boats and sharks staying away from boats can only help keep them safe. You have shown that the only true way to observe sharks without impacting their health / behaviour is via drone footage, I’ve been watching shark documentaries all my life ( 50+ years ) and the behaviours you capture, owing to how you catch them in many ways are better and many are things I’ve never seen before, please keep it up.

I feel like cage diving is not an objectively good or bad thing; it is more about how it is done, and if done correctly it seems to have a net benefit for white sharks. With sharks being much more valuable alive than dead. I hope the decision to keep the island closed is not permanent.

About a month ago I was looking into booking a dive trip to Guadelupe, but I saw that the island is currently closed. It definitely shocked me...why would they close off the island? Thank you for this great video. Without proper cause there's no justification for shutting down the island and putting the marine life at risk. I really hope it's able to open back up in 2023, because if it doesn't who knows if it'll ever be reopened.

I tried to watch a video once of them murdering and yes they are murdering sharks...you don't have to be human to be murdered. It's what's in the heart , the reason behind the killing. Shark finning isn't underground A documentary (I don't recall the name) filmed quite literally thousands of fins drying upon multiple warehouse rooves. It was heart breaking and disgusting. I'd like to find the documentary but I don't really want to see it again :(

It's possible the island is a government base ..sheer sides all around, protected by the biggest..yet no activity of filming is really allowed..no data..makes you wonder perhaps if there's something lot larger than we can even imagine. Those huge sharks, so scarred and beat up, are some of the most beautiful things to watch swim through the water there is. "Stately and sedately" befits a battleship and a 20-foot great white. Possible illegal fishing with possible Mexican drug trade and I think of a possible Asian country…but that's just me.

i really like the ocean talks! and i was really happy to hear you mention Deep Blue, is it possible you can share some insight or comments on the Orcas vs great white in Africa shores? i think it was 2016 when 6 Great White Sharks washed ashore dead and their liver missing and 2 orcas (portside and starboard) were considered the most likeliest of culprits.

This has become a major problem in South Africa....its not just suspected the orca are killing them, it is a certainty. Most of the Great Whites have left the area...and are either dead or simply relocated. Orca behavior is like humans...its often learned and passed on. For example a population off Spain is now attacking Sailboat rudders, which will likely lead to sailors shooting them, which would be disaster for the Orcas as they are almost as rare as large GW sharks. If the Shark liver craze is passed on to other Orca populations the GW sharks are in huge trouble. The Orca is far stronger and faster and more intelligent.

I went in 2021 to dive with the Great whites which was an amazing experience before the island closed again in 2022 and now in 2023 permanently. It’s extremely gut wrenching and sad to see such an essentially place for these sharks having a big target on their back now, thank you for highlighting the severity of the current closure!

This is an interesting topic because I have thought about these observation practices while watching your content on Instagram and other shark sighting videos. There are tons of viral videos featuring people chumming the waters, dragging lines or touching the sharks which I think are all very detrimental and dangerous for various reasons. However, cage viewing without chumming should be very safe and maybe moreso if the cages were not made of steel Furthermore, Mexico and corruption are practically synonyms at this point. Anyways, this is an amazing video. Your commentary and delivery is so good! It sounds like you have been doing this for years

Chumming has been illegal in Guadalupe for a long time. They do toss tuna heads on a rope but that is fairly benign. Also the cages are now aluminum which has improved shark safety as they don't have the electrical charge that formerly caused sharks to bash their heads against the cages.

I am surprised the number of shark fatsloty from cage accidents is so low. The biggest issue i think is the perception that cage diving is a net negstive snd increase likelihood of attacks. I think most of what we know now of whites are due to cages. Not natural state but the safest way to observd and learn from them. Great video Carlos. Hopefully it is picked up by a larger group or even a politician to assist in at lesdt stidying the effects and possible white poaching that could br done much easier with the closure

Thank you! You are absolutely correct about the cages. I wish more media would focus on the big picture rather than just the banning of the tours. Some kind of monitoring has to be implemented. I do think that the cage diving gets a bad rep due to a very small amount of negative accidents. Cage diving does have a net benefit at THIS location. Those folks openly swimming with white sharks in other places, in my opinion, are worse than any cage, simply because WHEN an incident occurs that injures a human, the sharks will be the bad guys forever. I say when, because they are wild unpredictable apex predators. While most of the time they have no interest in us, at ANY moment, that can change. That's just how predators are, regardless of species. That also doesn't take into account the chumming and destruction of feeding activities that get interrupted when people swim freely next to a white shark.

Well, this makes me feel a bit sick. Just hearing about the fisherman that cut up a shark in 3 pieces brought tears to my eyes. I've seen how awful shark finning is and just how many is mind blowing. I really don't understand this or why they can't still protect the park. I'll share with my friends, although no one seems to love sharks in the crazy way I do in my circle. I've been watching Guadalupe for years ever since the first shark tagging boats years ago. I agree that tourism can be harmful, but you brought up many good points. As a Mexican, I feel bad due to this news, actually one of my dream is see the white shark through the cage diving. now I need to see how make pressure to my government to clarify why was closed the island and why are they allow fishing in this area. I wish you would start a petition or some type of organization that has fundraising to take the Mexican government to court and fight the ban they have on going to the island. Fishing of any kind should not be allowed period! I say if we can’t go see the beautiful sharks then no one should be allowed to fish the waters recreationally nor commercially at all whatsoever! If being in the water with sea life upsets their ecosystem,I understand why we shouldn’t be allowed to dive or cage dive. But I don’t believe we hurt their ecosystem just by diving. Not the ones that really care. It’s people leaving trash on the beach and throwing it overboard that’s harming the fish….especially plastics. We have to fight this! But where do we start? cage diving in guadeloupe was the only dream I ever had in life. 30 now and hoped to experience it sometime in the next 15 years. incredibly saddened that they prohibited it. in my opinion the only place in the world worth paying for for great white cage diving. crystal clear water and probably the largest great white sharks in the world. kinda devastating that there's now a high chance that I will never get to experience it. but oh well, as always, it is what it is.

This is no unfortunate accident. The illegal and legal fishing trade hates divers and ecotourism. They need the watchful eyes recording these areas gone to go about their dirty work in peace. Like you said, the protis involved are ginormous. It's clearly about corruption, using greenwashing as a cover story. Like you say, there's no actual data to support this, and any closer examination of the situation reveals the cover story doesn't hold up to any scrutiny. The fact that fishing is allowed in these waters, were there is effectively no monitoring from any third party with the ecotourists and divers banished could not spell it out more clearly. I'm afraid it's up to the international diving community, and the marine researchers to fight this tooth and nail. And to raise awareness of this issue, and campaign for public support and mediacoverage. The only thing that can deter politicians whobstand to profit from hugely detrimental decisions pushed by official or inofficial lobby groups and crooks with big bucks, is being caught up in bad media coverage, risking scandal and public opinion. Politicians entire power deoends on avoiding these. So one must calculate that local media will be very reluctant to run these stories, corruption is rampant in media. A ziliion unoffivial agreements made. So it takes an international effort to direct the spotlight to what's going on. And likely some vigilant vokunteers willing to break the law to be present to actually document what's happening there. All of which is costly, as well as alot of unpaid hard work and loads of logistics in both areas. Your contribution with the work you do and showcase to the general public on this channel is very important and a great place to start. But it's a big fight to take on, possibly dangerous too. Which again, is why camera footage is an essential tool. I hope you can rally up a serious online conference and ongoing discussion on this topic amongst those already personally immersed in the interest of marine life protection to arrive at measures of action to be taken on site, in media, and in political work. I'm sure you can get some help spreading the word and petitioning through organizations like avaaz, greenpeace, wwf etc.etc. But it will take a really focused push to have an immediate effect on this exact location and issue. Thank you for speakinf up and pointing out this very real threat. I'd be happy to sign any petition and help out any way I can from where I am over here in Sweden, although I'm not part of the community of marine related work. Gladly. This is truly troubling to put it mildly.

5:38 re "Wrangling" or the process of dangling bait for shark, the tuna head you mentioned, but not allowing the shark to grab it Ocean Ramsey, when asked if sharks are capable of emotion, has said that she's seen them exhibit what amounts to frustration when being wrangled for these cage diving operations. When asked about the intelligence of sharks, Ocean (and cameraman / husband Juan) both said that they've seen sharks try to problem solve the dangling bait being pulled away by trying different tactics including using the boat's shadow to mask their approach to the bait. I'm fine with cage diving. I'm not OK with wrangling and frustrating the sharks. That seems a lot more negatively impacting on the sharks than just swimming with them that Ocean, a controversial figure, gets hate for. If the "sharks are already there," it shouldn't be necessary to to use wrangling which is frustrating to the animals. You present chumming in a negative light but wrangling in a nuetral light. Chumming isn't having a negative effect on the sharks. It's having a negative effect on any people who want to be in the water at the same time as a feeding response is being triggered (and could be considered pollution) and giving sharks association with boats and humans and food. Dragging bait that's repeated pulled away from the shark is fun for humans who are cage diving but detrimental to the shark and still associating boats and humans with food and a hunting or feeding response. If you're concern is the sharks, both are bad but wrangling is directly worse for the sharks. The situation the Mexican government is creating is definitely creating optimal circumstance for illegal white shark trophy fishing. I wonder if this is actually some kind of middle finger to the United States which has recently been securing an island in the Rio Grande river and clearing it of cartel activity. The island had disputed ownership and neither Mexico or the US patrolled it which left it free reign for cartel activities and a safe haven from both Mexican and US law enforcement. Perhaps if Mexico thinks Guadeloupe primarily has American tourists, this is some sort of retaliation for the US taking over the island in the Rio Grande? I'd have to see which occurred first, Guadalupe might have been closed first.

10:27 Sounds similar to the problem at Mexican borders, where human trafficking has become an even greater money maker than drug smuggling. Don't expect any assistance from the current US administration who are at best ignoring the situation and at worst are willing participants having lost track of an estimated 83 thousand undocumented minors in the past three years. There is a lot of money to be had in both the illegal wildlife and human trades, plenty enough for officials on both sides of the border to look the other way and sometimes make it possible.

Its scary because if anyone knows about Mexican illegal fishing understands there's no boundaries only profit. The Sea of Cortez used to be full of poachers & thankfully the gov't cracked down to a degree on them but thats much closer to inshore than Guadalupe. I read an article on the subject where they interviewed fisherman that were linked to the cartels & one stated a white shark the size of deep blue could fetch $200k. That means the large female breeders would all bring big money in the illegal trade market. How sick would be be to see these giant beautiful fish chopped up for profit. The dive boats are the front lines of protection against this practice!!!

Hey, imagine this: a drone that can land on the water, and look below the surface. Or better still, say the camera is attached on a ~1 meter rod below the drone, so the camera can stick into the water without having to land. Would something like that be useful to you? Disregard engineering difficulties, there's plenty of them on KZbin who'd be keen to develop something like that for a video ;)

As with most things, it isn't black and white. I don't feel observation cages is highly disruptive. Chumming and baiting I think do have some effect, but to what end. I do feel that it might make sense that you limit the number of boats to the island, ad that any incidents are reported so we can track it. Also are we tracking and understanding the population growth or otherwise to the sharks around the island? I feel there is no reason a healthy balance can't be achieved, providing much needed revenue to the area, as well as raising awareness of the sharks of the island. I feel that this was a political move of some sort, and no real data was provided supporting the closer.

The boats were already extremely limited to go to this island....I think there were less than 10-15 licsences total handed out...thats not many at all. Often the boats would be required to carry a Mexican marine biologist to observe. It was already very responsible and careful operation.

The Mexican government is serious about this situation with the island. A friend and his buddies were on vacation in Mexico this past June and one of the guys has a 32 foot boat and the group of guys ( 7 ) went to the Farlan island and they were just putting on their diving gear when a bigger boat pulled up next to them and 5 guys dressed in uniforms with patches saying, MEXICO CONSERVATION OFFICER. They told the guys that they couldn't dive there and had to leave the area. They actually stayed there until the guys were going away from the area. Our friend, James Rainey, said that they were all ticked off about it. So , apparently the Mexican government is guarding the island s with patrol boats. Crazy !
