Guardian Football passport talks to staff, players and fans about why the club has felt compelled to get involved in issues within its own neighbourhood. Last year, Rayo Vallecano with an annual budget of $8.6m heard about an elderly local woman facing lossing her home, in an ongoing wave of evictions across Spain of those who hadn’t been able to pay their mortgages or rent owing to the financial crisis. The coach and players found her a new flat and have been paying her rent and visiting her regularly. Recently Rayo launched its away shirt for 2015-16, with its traditional single colour diagonal stripe across the front replaced with rainbow colours. The design represents the fight against homophobia, and each separate colour also relates to a different cause.
