First, automatic firearms were banned in 1994, and are still heavily regulated, legal gun owners abide by these laws. Assault rifles are considered firearms that fire with multiple fire modes like 3 round burst or full auto. A semi-automatic firearm modeled after popular military variants are not assault rifles. A magazine holding 10, 30, or 100 rounds in a semi-automatic firearm only fires one bullet at a time. To wrongfully classify semi-automatic firearms is a way to remove legal firearms from legal gun owners. A pistol is semi-automatic firearm so how do you justify making semi-automatic firearms illegal, both fires only one bullet at time. The problem isn’t firearms, the problem is local governments being weak on gun crime with offenders under the age of 18 and first offenders. Speaking about pistols, they are still the leading firearm used in violent gun crime. So, I ask why the focus on a semi-automatic firearms model after an actual assault weapon the military uses that is no more deadly than any other semi-automatic? I don’t need to mention that criminals and bad gun owners will still break the law regardless of what bill is put into law. The removal of firearms in the US is nonsensical because 6.06 million people own guns legally, not to mention the illegal gun owners. So, what bill can be passed to limit the 2nd Amendment and the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Aren't there are only about 340 million people in the United states? If you want to do a thing you can do a thing. If the political will us there and enough people are behind it. The US banned alcohol for a time so bans on such a scale are not without precedent. As to whether the ban would be successful is up to the will of the majority. If you have school policies and drills in place about what to do in the case of an active shooter in the building, I'd say that is indicative of a wider problem that needs fixing, that being inappropriate access to firearms.

There is no hard and fast definition for assault rifle. Just because an AR-15 doesn't have select fire doesn't mean it's not an assault rifle. I would consider any magazine or clip fed rifle, capable of firing semi-auto, burst, or full auto, as an assault rifle. I would consider an M1 Garand an assault rifle, for example.
