Nice - he makes it so simple. Just don't lose your balanced state and you'll stay cool.

Dogen's teacher's phrase "drop off body, drop off mind" is so poetically beautiful, so simple and so profound- it's a poem of one line....

The Zen master tried very hard to get the questioner to understand the ultimate view of zen - there is no difference between a buddha and a sentient being. But they just couldn't get it, so he had to resort to the conventional view - the difference is balance. Some people just don't get it, so you gotta give them toys instead of knives ;-) I would love to study under this priest, he seems very very good.

Could it possibly "be" that wanting to drop the body and mind (seeking ways to control such a thought) is getting in the way of dropping the body and mind?

Ok I'll try to explain the droping of body and mind, What he's saying is that once the body and mind are balance meaning that once the body and mind are still, clear, calm, peace, empty then consciosness transparance through. And once that happen we will see that in true reality mind and body both doesn't exist only consciousness remian.
