Those cursed versions everyone on the internet claims are the original ones actually aren't though. The actual "originals" are pretty tame but obviously there's still differences from today's versions. For example the evil step mother that appears in various fairy tales today didn't really exist in a lot of them originally. The darker versions were very much purposefully made that way when they were written down because that's what the "author" wanted. The stories being told to kids weren't these darker ones though because the demographic telling stories to kids was also the one that didn't know how to read. And when I say original versions I mean the oldest written down ones, the actual ones varied greatly from house to house and village to village that there's no one right way the story goes
