I’m from the west midlands and the three big cities in the area are Birmingham, Coventry and Wolverhampton and they’re all within half an hour drive of each other, yet we all sound totally different when we speak. It’s amazing and I can’t think of another country where this happens. Maybe it does, but it requires a trained ear to recognise the changes of dialect.

Hi Amanda one thing you may not have noticed is that, although different, accents along the chalk ridges from the West Country to East Anglia, they change subtly from Devon to Wiltshire, Hampshire, Gloucestershire to Berkshire, Hertfordshire and then Suffolk and Norfolk. That’s because the chalk escarpment was a major trade route for hundreds of years. Never call a Makkem a Geordie or an Aberdonian a Glaswegian!. the reason there are so many accents is because long ago there weren't cars or trains or television or radio so people didn't travel far or hear people from other places and they have had hundreds of years to develop in. That accent is the worst accent going in our Isles ! I just can't understand them when it's a strong Newcastle accent. In my opinion, the Bristolian accent (Pirate Accent) and the West Country accent, in general, sound more closely related to the North American accents as we do have a lot of errrs and arrrs in our sounds. Also, the Republic of Ireland accent has a similar sounding twang too !

Lots of people in the UK would tell you to your face that they don't have an accent, when they obviously do. RP is the "gold standard" the one that is considered "no accent". This is generally from the middle of the south, around the Oxford area. I was born in Oxford and have lived in Norwich for 30+ years. I hear Norfolk twang coming out when I talk now, much in the same way that your American accent is starting to fail and become more British. This is definitely a good thing. I think your husband took it easy on you, there's many more accents than you were subjected to. Enough for a part two for sure.

Love your channel and you did really well 👍You're picking up quite alot of British words already in you're accent 😀😀 Another thing I find quite interesting with accents... Are places with a crossed/mixed accent... In Portsmouth for example, people have quite a distinctive accent compared to the rest of Hampshire and the south east... Being a Navy port and city, it's picked up words from all over the world, quite a few Gypsy words, naval slang, a mixture of Cockney and slightly west country accents... Distinctive words like mush (mate) and dinlo (idiot) are practically unheard of outside Pompey (Portsmouth)... Another city Stoke in Staffordshire, sounds a mixture of Scouse (Liverpudlian) Mancunian and Brummie/Black country (Birmingham and surrounding areas) probably not wise to say it to their face though... Hahaha coz they'll say it's a Potteries accent!! 🤣🤣 I'm from Derbyshire which borders Staffordshire and it's completely different again... Anyway thoroughly enjoyed watching you're video's and channel 🙂😎👍

You did brilliantly! (On the accent-guessing, that is. On the accent-imitating, maybe a *slightly* lower hit-rate at the moment... :-))

You should try Galloway Irish, Lewis, Shetland, Inverness and Buchan. That might confuse you.

I'm very impressed. Many Brits would fail that test.
