The '50s were a strange decade. The images I've seen and history I know from it don't fit too well with the music. Fresh off WW II with the cold war and nuclear tensions, you would think the music would be more.... serious. But no, some of this stuff is really goofy/silly almost to the point of comedy.

On this video it is easy to see how much Elvis and Little Richard completely changed the sound of music. In 1955 Little Richard. Then in 1956 Elvis. Music went from being very calm with ballads and playful childish and sometimes Standards, and Southern Western music to in your face Rock and Roll. All that started in 1955. What a truly drastic change in a matter of less than a decade.

Ricky Nelson, so very sad, he died entirely too soon, and in such a terrible way. So sad too, because he was so ready to sing, not for money but just for the joy of knowing that his fans enjoyed his singing so much. I feel so sorry his family and all of his fans who loved him so much. I loved watching the family series and I loved it when Ricky sang. 😢😢😢😢

thing was, apart from the really big artists (such as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra etc.) music was very regional back then. You could find the top 10 selling records in America and apart from the international superstars even the people brought up on 50s music in England would know very little - similarly you could get the top 10 songs from England and again, apart from the Elvis-type superstars very few Americans would know the songs.
