How to make a test...1. Pick a famous violin concerto. 2. See if that composer wrote any other violin concertos that never gets played. 3. Profit.

Sometimes by accident, and sometimes on purpose, I manage to include a certain piece towards the end of the performance. But sometimes listeners themselves guess right at the very end without prompting. Thanks for your comment.

Wow, that was hard! I got one number correct, and four of the composers, all without recognising any of the pieces. I'm actually fairly pleased with that, considering you kept well away from the better-known repertoire 😊.

I myself was surprised at the end how many unknown works there were, but I decided to leave everything as it is, maybe next time I’ll change the concept a little to make the new part easier.

3.5/15. I know a few violin concerti....but not enough.
@stefankwiatkowski52415 ай бұрын
Sure, do a part 2. There are plenty more violin concerti I've never heard before! I have a recording of the Wieniawski because it was one of my father's favorites. I might have to dig that out and give it a listen. (By the way, 5/15, which was all luck.)

There will probably be a second part, but I don’t know when. By the way, little-known concertos, incl. Wieniawski, I was quite pleased, although not all of them.

Well, I don't know many violin concerti, but it was fun listening along trying to guess the composers from style anyway. Not so successful, but at least Shostakovich and Mozart are quite distinctive!

BRUCH HAD A THIRD VIOLIN CONCERTO?!?!?!?!?!?

Not only that, I think it is his best. It lacks the concision of the 1st one but I think it is far better composed.

Kind of makes me realise how many blandly generic violin concertos got written in the 19th century or thereabouts.

I somehow got 10/15, and all of them were just lucky guesses. It could have been 1/15 instead. I didn't know any of them really. I prefer to guess composer than which number it is. Not that I recognized many composers either (not even Shostakovich this time).
@rufescens5 ай бұрын
I also prefer composer over number. If you don't know the piece, you can make an educated guess. If you don't know the number... that's generally quite meaningless.

I agree that guessing just numbers is not very interesting. Guessing the composer is already more interesting, but guessing both the composer and the concert number is generally excellent, although you need to understand it very well - that’s why the Expert level!
