Quite a busy project calendar, good luck with it! Wow that temporary fix of the rudder was super ingenious! Start with the things you absolutely must do on the hard, shaping, shaft and bearing. I hope you manage to seal the engine well fixing all leaks!

Lots of work busy busy:) Re Keel, FYI we have an ex racing yacht at our yc and the owner did a huge mod to it years he removed fin keel for a lift keel, so basically he has the same keel and bulb draft down, but was able to raise it for the shallows, i have seen it out on the hardstand he explained how he did it, he also reshaped the rudder shorter but longer/fatter i.e. same area just less draft, he has owned this yacht for over 25years and still races it but also cruises in her, i have been away on a club cruise with him and he anchored in all the bays i did and i have a 1.8m draft.

Heyhey this is interesting to hear! Yeah I guess we will shorten the keel a little one day, but we’d want to involve a naval architect to check the calculations etc and it’ll be a big job and we’ll need to get our hands on more lead etc to make the bulb heavier so it’s not something we have the funds for right now but it’s on our to do list…
@MicBruise10 күн бұрын
Three big sets of jobs! At least the bulb fairing, rudder repair, and antifouling tasks are well-understood, with little uncertainty. You never know what problems you will encounter with the engine seals, gearbox, and rudder bearing. I'm sure Timo is up to the task, regardless. He always finds a way. Jo, pregnancy suits you. Best of luck. Nemo's first day of school reminds me of mine. I started with a cousin who threw a major wobbly, holding on to my aunt's leg, the whole works. I remember being puzzled about why he was upset. Fair winds.

Thanks Michael, lovely to hear from you as always 😊 and yes a very accurate analysis of the situation. We’ll start with the more uncertain jobs so we’ve got maximum time to rectify any potential problems that arise. Hahaha yeah it sounds like first days of school are always a bit of a challenge 😉 unfortunately (or fortunately - however you want to look at it) for Nemo, it probably won’t last long enough (eg we’ll leave) before he gets used to it (going to school)… 🫤

1st day of school always hard ...😊 good luck with your program of work, the idea of eventually swapping out the rudder to 2 external no -maintenance ones is a great way to go. The rudder designs on the IMOCA 60 Vendée Globe yachts are worth taking a close look at online.

Hahaha yeah I guess it’s all part of growing up… is hard to see them suffer tho 🥹 it’s a shame that for Nemo probably by the time he gets used to it, it’ll be time to leave…

Nemo at his age is so much like my son. Connor is 22 by now. He is in the international tennis environment. However, when I ask him what he does all day, he answers: "Mostly getting rid of the girls chasing me". And on the rudder. You have a fast boat.And then a free single rudder without a skeg is tricky. Repairing the existing rudder might work, but I would laminate a skeg to protect it. This would also mean more course stability so less work for the autopilot. My preference would however be two rudders 2 m draft ( my guess) from the stern. Build 3 off those. One as a spare. And then get rid of the steering wheels (to me they take a lot of space in the cockpit) and go for a tiller and tillerpilot.
@SailingNV7 күн бұрын
Thanks for the nice comment, haha cute re Nemo and your son ;) it’s interesting to hear your suggestions, unfortunately skegs dojt work with boats with our hull shape because the bottom is too flat. And if we had a tiller steering at the back of the boat we would be 8m from the entry of the boat. The wheels are really comfortable to use. But we do want to change the rudder setup to put 2 on the back because we don’t like the current setup with the bearing
@gertboerman36664 күн бұрын
@@SailingNV OK. Up to you. Imoca boats use tillers. And they are pretty fast.

Wishing you the best with these important and challenging projects. Perhaps you can get some remote support with the engine, an extra pair of experienced eyes could help it to go smoothly and ensure you get the correct seals, gaskets quickly. I guess your restricted budget would preclude a Coppercoat project, but it could be the solution to preventing growth below the waterline, whilst reducing scrubbing and extending intervals between haulouts. I think the UK cost is around £2,600 for the Coppercoat pack for a 65-foot yacht, although NV has a very low wetted area v length. A new barrier coat would be required before applying. I am surprised that such a large boat has a saildrive, it would be cheaper long term to switch to a shaft drive and even install a thrust bearing like Sailing Magic Carpet have done. Some channels have done project specific fundraisers as Vet Tails did via Chuffed. I sometimes prefer to make a one-off donation, rather than have a subscription payment.
@SailingNV7 күн бұрын
Hi Tommy thanks for all this 🙏, yes we’d love a copper coat but would need to find some sponsors. We do have some friends we contact about the engine stuff sometimes. We do also have the option to make a one off donation via our ko-fi website, a link is in the description

You should give serious thought to shortening and increasing the weight of the keel if you intend to sail in shallower waters.
@SailingNV7 күн бұрын
Thanks yes we know a lot of people think we should do this and maybe one day we will shorten it a little but for now we really like sailing with the boat like she is and at the moment we don’t have the budget for this as we’ve got other things higher on our priority list like changing the rudder setup

Out of all the boats you can buy in the world to cruise the world this is possibly the worst boat to choose. That keel is ridiculous for a cruising boat on so many levels
