i don't mind "americans coming to our party" the more people the more fun it can be. The thing i fear is that eurovision could be dragged into the american culture war if it become very popular in the US. Imagine how some media would react to people like let3 and Verka with the current "drag scare". Thats something i just don't have to worry about from australia or other potential participants.

Europe would just give the US the finger. And rightfully so … some of the people in this country need to have some Truth knocked into their heads, that the US isn't universally revered, that people in other countries _do_ actually want to stay in their own countries and _not_ come to the US.

This makes me both want and fear an international version of Eurovision Cuz I'm Canadian and we have our own problems, plus we often get the runoff of American problems, but we're also responsible for some very great singers, both well known and ones you've not heard of (I can think of at least one very interesting band I'd think would be a pretty good entrant into that type contest) But at the same time, if the American Culture war gets involved we risk stifling major voices for being gender nonconforming to the standards of the most powerful country in the group Do we have two winners each year? It's hard to fully comprehend all the problems and hurtles that would be required to do it? What about different genres, should we have different contests for each genre like the Olympics, should Metal have to compete with Power Ballads? Am I overthinking this

They did in fact "lose the connection" to those countries, because some of them refused to announce the simulated votes, while others, like Montenegro, didn't (Serbia got 12 points in both scenarios, so it didn't matter that much, or they didn't know there was a difference). Romania refused to announce the votes in which Moldova didn't get 12 points. And the EBU didn't just deduct the points which were meant for other 5 countries, they annulled all original points and replaced them with simulated points. Also, the fact that broadcasters knew that the votes they were given to read out weren't their original votes just proves that it was rigged by the broadcasters, because they aren't supposed to know them. They only receive the accumulated jury votes from the EBU and then read them out. Sorry if I mixed some things up, but this was a year ago :)

As a Eurovision fan who doesn’t live in Europe, I’m just happy that I can actually have a say this year even if it’s a small one. That said, I totally get why people want to keep the voting limited to Europe (it is called Eurovision, after all). Also this past JESC had a number of tech issues during voting, and I can’t help but wonder if that’s because of the sheer amount of people from around the world being on the site at the same time

Agree with a lot of this. Also, at least for now, a lot of the rest of the world that are even gonna be voting were probably already watching or aware of the contest in some way (immigrants/families of immigrants, overseas eurofans (maybe in the making), etc). IK this isn't the only reason why purists dont want the rest of the world (namely the US) voting, but the large mainstream radio chart listeners won't bother voting anytime soon lol

Hopefully they've sorted out the glitches in the paying for votes with credit card thing that will be used for international votes. They tested it in Australia last year and a major credit card company blocked the cards of every one of their customers who voted. I guess thousands of their customers making small transactions with a new swiss merchant during a 10 minute window at a weird time of day looked like fraud. I bet their call centre had fun dealing with stressed and annoyed Eurovision fans who'd all been up since 5am Australian time

6:00 The CBC radio program, "As It Happens," did a comparison of Duncan Lawrence's winning song and the UK's last-place entry. They played the first 30 seconds of both. And the last 30 seconds of both. They. Sounded. _the Fscking Same._ Sorry, Duncan, but you won because everybody was listening to your song by watching the official music video with their pants down. And you know what? _I can't even remember Duncan Lawrence's song, any more than I remember what the UK entered. The songs I remember from that year are "Hatrid mun sigra" [which I still play] and Jendrik's, "I Don't Feel Hate," which I found cute and endearing.

The Canadian don't follow ESC at all. They don't speak about it, except when a canadian did participate. For example : Céine Dion in 1988... but only to inform she won 2001 : Natasha St-Pierre.... 4st.... And this year... no canadian media follow the ESC. If France expect to get some points from Canada... forget it. Now why should North American music industry come to disturbe europeans (yes EBU members would be more precise) music industry. We got enough english songs... and not sure if english people from north america would be touched by different european countries music styles They would probably vote for UK song or any other "generic" yet americain pop music style song....

Opening voting up to the rest of the World is, I suspect, mostly financially motivated. Network providers will be battling for the right to handle all those in-coming votes and the revenue each paid vote from across the globe will bring. The boosted global visibility of ESC itself will bring in more advertisers, particularly North American advertisers. It’s good business to go global.
@starryk79

I don't mind that change as it has little effect on the outcome anyway. And i am also agreeing that they should keep the juries for the final. I just watched the old recording of the ESC 2004 yesterday (can be found on the ESC KZbin channel) and it was so predictable. Ireland voted for the UK, Germany for Turkey (the biggest group of migrants living in Germany), of course all scandinavian countries for each other and all the balkan countries also for each other, same of course for all former soviet countries. And while this is still happening to some extent it is definitely less prominent with the juries balancing it out a bit. And yes the current way of presenting the votes keeps it really exciting until the very end. So they definitely need to keep that.

I think there will never be a fair public voting. The system is from the 60s, when there was very little immigration within Europe so the population of each country was quiete homogenous. Today Millions of Europeans live in another European country. And those immigrant source countries have a slight advantage. At least most: Turkey did always very well in ESC, as does Serbia currently. Poland on the other hand is the origin of many immigrants in Europe and they never do well. So it needs a mixture of a large diaspora, an interest in the ESC and some amount of nationalism. People have to take the effort to participate in the voting process. Look at me: I am a huge fan of ESC but i seldom participate in the voting. ( I did vote for Trenuletul, though!) But: block and immigrant voting aside: these save you only from the dreaded 0 points. It is not enough to win the competition. And to be honest: if let's say the balkan countries exchange 12 points, I prefer that anytime over the exchange of bullets and grenades. I'd love to see Armenia and Aserbaidjan exchange 12 points regularily or one day Russia and Ukraine again. The voting system is anachronistic. But ESC is also a big party. A party bringing people from all over Europe together. And this is what we need in those times. And the bigger the party, the merrier. So welcome world to the voting, welcome to the show, welcome to the party! BTW: this event is called the Eurovision Song Contest, not the European Song Contest. So non European EBU members like Georgia, Armenia, Aserbaidjan, Israel, and recently Australia could join. But to any good ESC bullshit bingo sheet you have to add: "Someone complains on social media that country xy takes part although not a European country".

Some thoughts: 1) Kick out the jury in semi WON'T solve completely the rigged votes problem. Remember how Moldova bought multiple sim cards in order to vote Natalia Gordienko from abroad in 2021 and reach the final (where only a few people voted for her). 2) When they implemented worldwide televote, I was afraid that US people will vote massively Ukraine as Europe did in 2022 trying to "help" Ukraine in their war. Luckily there are only 12 points to share in that new system, but I'm already afraid that this year we neither have competition, as Ukraine is BIG favourite in odds right now (as they were in February 2022). Anyways, welcome US people to ESC, I loved your past year's winner of ASC, and Alessia Michelle are very welcomed here working in their social networks for some years!

@overthinkingit It is only a matter of time before the EBU invites the US and Canada to take part in Eurovision (as they did with Australia). Belarus and Russia will not be in the ESC for the next few years and some of the Balkan countries don't have enough money to pay the participation fee... so the EBU needs more strong countries to join the club - to keep the show on this high level.
@AammaK

I don’t believe that at all. US already started Americavision or whatever it’s called. Canada I could see happening WAY into the future, as a one time thing most likely, but making it a continuing thing would probably be the downfall of EBU in the eyes of countries who have taken part for decades. EBU could lost these countries as a protest. The big five would have a huge impact in deciding if that should happen, all they had to do is to threaten to retract future funding. Australia was invited as a one time gesture of politeness, but it stuck. It’s a weird result of events but I think it only works as an exception. This would probably be the only way to even suggest participation of North America, to introduce a one time participation and then continue according to the public reception. I also can’t see US and Canada having much motivation to fund a niche european contest with very limited fandom in their own populations. If the public loses interest and ESC isn’t economically benefial for the North Americans there’s no point in continuing funding as just charity. There are a lot of different ways EBU could improve international collaboration and draw in funds from other sources though, but I don’t think inviting outside countries would be the most sustainable solution any time soon.

Let's face it, the reason they're giving the rest of the world a chance to (pay to) vote is money. Same reason they wouldn't make a statement by holding a smaller event in Lviv this year.

I feel like it's a damned if you do damned if you don't situation when it comes to voting and points. People are gonna be outraged at whatever system no matter what. The system they've used for the grand final since 2016 is great and keeps you on your toes. I get why people don't like the change with the semis, but I'm willing to see how it plays out. Putting in songs that the public enjoys in the grand final might make it fun and enjoyable. If it doesn't work out that well then so be it.

I personally don't think children, mothers, elderly people and single women had voting in Eurovision as their first priority in f*ing May last year. I did vote for them, for Moldova and for France but if I was a refugee that would not be the first thing that I would do 2 months after my country got invaded. My argument against the juries is pretty obvious, I don't want them gone, but may I remind you our juries in Romania are very very patriotic, they would never give their 12 points to someone else rather than Moldova, including last year,people were mainly mad that they took our 12 points from Moldova and gave them to Ukraine, it was a big scandal on romanian television that Moldova did not give us 12 points and their juries were made to explain and were like: we love Romania, this doesn't matter, we are so sorry, it doesn't define us. TVR were ready to sue because they also discovered 3 other countries voted for eachother in the semi and in the final, it would've been some good quality drama but I think TVR realised it is better to use the money for the lawyers for paying the tax to register in Eurovision again .

At this point, the EBU is looking beyond Europe and Australia in an effort to create a “Worldvision” type of contest, purist fans be damned.

I think the vote from the rest of the world is a way to know where people look the show via the IP adress. For example, if EBU remarks a lot of votes comes from Mexico, why not invite them for the next year.

Americans shall be able to join, but just think first of the possibility to have to handle the chance of getting the last position sometime. In the near past years Germany has got that place 3 times, UK 2 times, Spain, Portugal, France 1 time... That does not mean that their songs were so bad, but someone has to take that place in a competition.

Even in public voting, the exchange of votes is common. Which i think is ridiculous, you should vote for the best song. I'm portuguese and i still can't believe we won in 2017, given that we only have borders with Spain

The jury votes were reintegrated for other, more pressing reasons. Indeed Scandinavian, Russophone and Yugophone states were propping each other up--at the expense of unaligned, small countries that had participated for decades. These were votes based on familiarity rather than politics, but they still skewed qualification massively. Second was the calibre of talent in non-aligned participants: why would an established artist from France (Kaas), Spain (Soler), or the Netherlands (Anouk) risk humiliation when the numbers were staked against them in a televote? Finally, heads of delegations conceded that televotes cannot be calibrated to music/entry/performance/song quality: people cast votes for any reason that want. Juries at least can be tasked with applying specific criteria. It will be interesting to see how many unaligned delegations qualify for the Liverpool Grand Final. Love your work.

I like these changes. Although juries aren't perfect either (funny how every single Armenian juror puts any Azerbaijani entry at dead last position, and vice versa) they are still good balance to overly patriotic immigrant voting for their country of origin regardless of the song. Or voting for the country they like, again, regardless of the song. Last, but certainly not the least, let's not forget those eurofans obsessed with campy/"slay" entries. According to them, so far this year the best song is from Norway - something no one outside the fandom (and Norway and its neighbouring countries) won't be listening to after the show, just like it happened with Keiino.
