I was in college for 4 years, 8 full semesters, and then dropped out. I love sharing my story to raise awareness of what a college dropout can look like. No, I didn’t party too much. No, I’m not lazy. No, I don’t hate learning. I was involved in extracurriculars, had amazing friends, a great support system, and I loved what I studied (most of the time). I have Bipolar 1 and experienced a full-blown manic and depression episode (called a “mixed state” episode) at the beginning of COVID, during that I was sexually assaulted, and I just wasn’t able to prioritize school when it took all of my energy to simply survive. I chugged along for a surprising 3 more semesters, but barely scraped by. Online school was hard for my extroverted self. I was on academic probation for 2 straight years until finally it became a suspension, and when they gave me 1 last chance I wasn’t able to pass my classes. I’m working my dream job now in leadership at a summer camp / retreat center. It’s been almost two years since dropping out, and my life is amazing. I’ll go back to finish my degree eventually (I’m about 2 semesters away #5yearplan), but I’m in no rush at the moment. My goal is to run my own summer camp one day, and thankfully this industry is pretty lenient on college degrees. I promised my parents I’d be back in school by the time I’m 30, which is 4.5 years away. I know I can do it! Idk if anyone will actually see this, but I just felt like sharing my lovely lil dropout story. I loved this video so much!!! Cut is my fav KZbin channel, they really open up the doors for great conversations. I feel so heard with this one!

Thank you for sharing. I had a similar experience, though for me it was depression. I'm glad I had a strong enough support system that allowed me to transfer and go back. Though getting to that finish line was one of the hardest things I've had to do in my life. I'm so happy you were able to find your passion and joy. I hope you get your camp one day (and finish those semesters if that's what you want to do)

It made me sad hearing the assumption of the type of people college dropouts are. I love routine, I work very hard, I’m motivated, but my mental health was very bad and I had no support and was abused at home. Now that I’m out of that scenario I am considering going back, but the assumption dropouts like to party and are lazy… I know the exception doesn’t make the rule but still.

Agree with you completely! I think so many of us who struggle in school, myself included, struggle with mental health or trauma, so I tried to highlight that. I think there are so many factors so I was trying to assess which factor could’ve led to dropout.

this was a really interesting video to watch. I think the only thing that bothered me early in the video was the elementary teachers comments about how the signs were a sign of 'shame' and feeling sorry for giving the first guy the dropout sign and repeatedly feeling bad for giving the signs out. I'm in college, my second year, and plan to finish, but I think it's really important to acknowledge that dropping out from college is not something negative that must be associated with shame! If anything, I think it's really brave and often smart for most college dropouts in the long term. at the same time, I really loved the approach he was taking to personally identify them-by asking unconventional questions that connected more to psychology. Nice video!

Good video! I'm a college graduate myself. It took me eight years going part time to complete my degree start to finish, but I got it done. I made some poor decisions in high school, but I think I at least made up for it by graduating college.
