Just finished watching Lilies of the Field for the umpteenth time. And then this one, also. I was 10, and this was one of a few films that informed the time, and changed me and reinforced the teachings of my parents, my mom a teacher and writer and my dad, a small town pastor in Indiana during turbulent times.

I was only 17 years old when I first saw this movie, I am 72 years old now . I remember thinking at the time of its release way back so long ago , that this film has taken on one of the toughest subject matters I could think of . I also said to my family , this film is going to change the way people think . It didn't happen overnight but it did happen . My personal belief has always been that this brilliant movie was one of the big contributing factors to not only creating tolerance were their was hatred , but eventually complete and embracing acceptance of interracial marriage . A wonderful cast and a wonderful movie . Thank you for this video .

Unfortunately, Andrew, we've just came through a Trump presidency. A crazy sociopath who joyfully and deliberately ripped the cover back and rejoiced at the racism and hatred and bigotry still boiling away beneath the surface of white, working class America. And then used it, and fed it, to satisfy his own personal ego. And so everything we thought we'd rid ourselves of is on the rise again - White Supremacy, Nazism, all the worst examples of racism. Armed militias claiming to be patriots. The storming of the Capitol itself. And close to half our country embracing it all, rejoicing at it, in fact! We're headed right back in the dark ages again. All to satisfy the ego of one malignant narcissist. If we could just stand back, get everyone to take a breath, we could actually learn from all this mayhem. We could become a better nation, a more compassionate people. But I doubt we will. It's more likely we'll lose our Republic to this capering clown. And a valiant attempt at freedom and happiness will simply become another failure to add to the depressing list filling the history books. So sad.

This is the first time in my life that I see why Kate Hepburn won the Oscar for her performance over Faye Dunaway( Bonnie and Clyde) and Anne Bancroft(The Graduate). The emotional moments displayed by her Acting in this movie is the Hope Diamond of Performances. She says she have never seen this film because the memories of the making of this film with Spencer's condition was too painful to see. The racial aspect of this movie at the time it was made is very relevant. But I see this film as a meeting of the very Classic and the Very Modern. Kate and Spencer and Stanley Kramer as Very Classic. Sidney Poitier who was the first Black Actor to be the top Box Office Star that year with 3 films with the highest Gross and Popularity. To Sir With Love, GWCTD, In the Heat of the Night, also Kate Houghton, and Isabel Sanford(before Louise Jefferson) as the Very Modern. I am glad to be in the Generation that experienced This Monumental and Historical Film. Not just about Interracial Couples,. This Film is about Humanity.

If its half of what we had then that's everything. The way he looked at her and when her tears started to show. I said to myself, this is not acting. This is real. I felt it and it always stayed with me. RIP both of you. You are now together again.

I was 21 Sept. 15, 1967 and I am now 77 years old. I loved that picture and would watch it several times over the course of several decades. In fact, I just watched it on KZbin a couple of days ago and I still love it. I was raised by my grandparents who experienced the Depression. My grandmother took me to various musicals and took me to see the Rockettes every Christmas. They told stories of how my grandfather drove a Coal truck during the Depression and my grandmother was a housewife but then later on went back to school and became a Therapist and got a Nursing License as well. They were fortunate because they were able to get sugar and coal for heat. My Grandfather later on became a very gifted Carpenter and worked with a good friend building very well made houses. My Grandfather's favorite actress was Mary Pickford and my Grandmother liked Mickey Rooney and so I'm very familiar with Yankee Doodle Dandy among other notable projects Mickey Rooney was in. I watch Korean and Chinese dramas with English sub-titles on various platforms with the help of the Internet. I'm so very grateful for the making of this film as it was very well written and directed and all the actors and actresses were well thought of for their characters in this film.

I was 18 years old in 1967, when I first saw this movie. And I loved it. Even as a white, heterosexual teenage male, I loved it. I loved the MESSAGE of it. The message of tolerance and respect and connection. Sidney Poitier's performance was, as always, masterful. Tracy and Hepburn were, as always, outstandingly authentic. I came out of the movie believing that we had finally turned the corner, finally abandoned racism forever. And it was the sixties, too! Rock and roll, great movies, freedom, LSD, weed, Greenwich Village, Carnaby Street, tie-die shirts and bell-bottom pants. And THE 'PILL', sexual freedom etc. And, on top of it all, the opportunity of a fine education. We had everything, and the world was wonderful. How did we get to today? How did we fall so far? Total political division. Hatred and vitriol. And, of course a Donald Trump presidency ripping away the cover and exposing the racism and hatred still seething and boiling away within. And also, now, even the possible destruction of our Republic itself! It didn't have to be this way. And it makes me sad.

America has always contained a thread of anti-intellectualism - we'd rather have John Wayne than Linus Pauling, Ronald Reagan rather than Jerry Brown or Bernie Sanders. My mom and dad's tiny little Chapman College fell under the spell of Orange County politics and John Wayne philanthropy and lost its way from its Heifer Project - type origins. It is now a corporate online giant, a shell of its former self. I feel your wistful longing for the hopefulness of the 60's and 70's. Reading Ray Bradbury recently, and his speculative fiction has a certain melancholy to it, the loss of small town America. Not the racist part. The helping part.

I share your hurt and anxiety, Rumi. I believe the powers that be left racism in place, just better disguised. The civil rights struggle could and should have been allowed to progress toward its real goal - ending economic exploitation. The desire to use free labor, after all, is the sole reason American racism was ever created as an institution.

Our society is "split" because people watch "the news" which is 100% pure manipulation of the masses by the 5 or 6 men who own ALL MEDIA OUTLETS in the world. It is their desire to keep people separated by belief, race, political party, religion, etc. If The People ever came together to demand truth from their media and honesty from their political "leaders" those 5-6 men would lose all of their power over us and we would unite as human beings who want and deserve the best of all possible worlds. Without separating us and pitting us against each other - their control over our behavior could not exist.
@rumi9005
@rumi9005 2 жыл бұрын
@@brianarbenz1329 -I only just read your comment, Brian. You say "The desire to use free labor, after all, is the sole reason American racism was ever created as an institution.". I hadn't looked at it that way before, but I believe you're right. Racism itself is simply a fear of the 'other'. That's built in to our nature since ancient tribal times. We view ourselves, our group, our tribe, as human beings. And the 'other' are seen as less than human. So they can be marginalized, conquered and even killed without us feeling much in the way of guilt. Where we evolve is how we define the 'other'. The 'other' used to be nearby tribes competing for the same resources. So in lean times (times of scarcity, famine etc), if they invade our lands, steal our resources, we can attack them, even kill them. Because, after all, they're really less than human anyway. And we can invade their lands if WE run out of food, of course, for the same reason. But nowadays the 'other' is simply any group other than our own group. We generally don't think of them as actually not human. But that same concept is still there, buried deep down. It's why we can fight wars. So, if we want to exploit people, all we have to do is see them as other, as less than human. Then we can exploit them without guilt. And, starting with slavery, we institutionalized that exploitation, right?

The actors are all amazing I'm sitting right there with them following them around their home as they go through the porcess of understanding and reacting to the situation they are finding themselves in....This movie represents so many layers of artistry, from it being the last film that Spencer Tracy did and still manages to leave us all breathless with the power of his words to Katherines Hepburnes obvious pride and pain at knowing this could be the last time the love of her life would be doing what he loved best. To Sidney Poitier who never made a film that did not leave me an emotional mess as I stoped to reavaluating what I situations and what they really mean... (He was once stopped on the street by a stranger who told him "You look more like Spencer Tracy than Spencer Tracy himself.") I feel like I got an understanding of history and US culture from the movie. I remembered the conversations between Poitier and the maid, and with his father the most vividly; it helped me understand that a tolerant society can't just be taken for granted, that there was a struggle, recent and ongoing for people to live together with love and understanding. I rewatched it this year and wow.

I have seen "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" countless times. And yet, I come away from this very fine piece of work. I know something of the pain you all were in, having done it. My respect for Spencer Tracy and family knows no bounds. This is a ground- breaking piece of work and should be viewed periodically by everyone in these United States of America.

When Stanley Kramer's "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" opens in movie theaters in the fall of 1967 with an all-star cast, everybody's talking about the most powerful film that everything including social issues. Nominated for several Academy Awards in 1968 including best picture and won both for best actress, Katharine Hepburn and best original screenplay, William Rose. It was the most successful film in the history of Columbia Pictures. Nothing works better than this. "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" really changed our lives and touched our hearts & souls, that's why the film simply lasts forever.

I re-watched this 2 months ago, wondering how dated it would be. Really, I was amazed at how well this film has aged. There are a couple minor missteps in the dialogue in the early going, but overall this movie is deservedly a timeless classic, because it so effectively deals with an issue that is as old as race itself. Absolutely beautiful piece of filmmaking and the cherry on top is a dying Spencer Tracy's brilliant performance. That he died 2 weeks after that last scene shows how ill he was.

The most flagrant mistake in the making of this movie would be the age of the couple getting married. You mean to tell me that Spencer Tracy was the Father of the 24 year old ? Yeah I can believe it..... but I sure can't believe that a 70 year old Hepburn was the mother of the young lady.
@kurtwehrmeister5684
@kurtwehrmeister5684 2 жыл бұрын
@@yhideit4427 Hepburn was sixty in 1967; her niece's character (the daughter) was supposed to be 23. So the Draytons were supposed to be 37 and (he) 44 when their daughter would have been born in 1944. Certainly unusual at the time (though not now), but not unheard of. (My mother was 37 when she had me in 1957.)

I have seen this film many times, and the acting has touched me to my core every time. The final scene in the film, to me, is a confession by Tracy to Hepburn. The young black actor who bumped into Tracey's car is a very good actor who only got bit parts. I like that scene also. When Kate says how she knew that she was vital to him when they started out. Even though this film is about interracial marriage, I get a Spencer and Kate love story from it.
