Gufo comune - Long-eared owl

Ascoltate questo verso che echeggia nella notte… Lo avete mai sentito?
Si tratta del gufo comune (Asio otus), un rapace notturno molto diffuso in Nordamerica, Europa e Asia. Preda esclusivamente di notte piccoli animali, quali topi, talpe, scoiattoli, pipistrelli, ratti, uccelli e insetti. Vive in ambienti forestali a copertura diversificata e predilige boschi misti prossimi ad aree aperte, canali, fiumi e frutteti che favoriscono la caccia.
In questo periodo il gufo comune si aggrega sui posatoi, condividendo il luogo del riposo con altri conspecifici - comportamento singolare per i rapaci notturni. Un elemento molto riconoscibile sono i due ciuffi sopra le orecchie. Anche se il gufo comune non è in grado di muovere gli occhi, può ruotare la testa fino a 270°!
Nella cultura popolare gli hanno attribuito una reputazione di “uccello del malaugurio” per via della sua elusività, delle abitudini notturne e per il suo verso cupo; invece, nelle storie e nelle fiabe il gufo è quasi sempre un personaggio di rilievo, saggio ed erudito.
Anche se il suo stato di conservazione non desta preoccupazione, né in Europa né in Italia, esistono diverse minacce per la specie, che possono essere mitigate: elettrocuzione, impatto contro cavi sospesi e recinzioni, abbattimenti illegali in periodo di caccia, nonché disturbo antropico e distruzione dei siti riproduttivi.

We are talking about the long-eared owl (Asio otus), a nocturnal bird of prey widespread in North America, Europe and Asia. It preys exclusively on small animals at night, such as mice, moles, squirrels, bats, rats, birds and insects. It lives in forest environments with diversified coverage and prefers mixed woods close to open areas, canals, rivers and orchards which favor hunting.
In this period the long-eared owl aggregates on the perches, sharing the resting place with other conspecifics - a singular behavior for nocturnal birds of prey. A very recognizable element are the two tufts above the ears. Although the long-eared owl cannot move its eyes, it can rotate its head up to 270°!
In popular culture, it has been given a reputation as a "bird of ill omen" due to its elusiveness, nocturnal habits and dark call; instead, in stories and fairy tales the owl is almost always a prominent, wise and erudite character.
Even if its conservation status does not give cause for concern, neither in Europe nor in Italy, there are various threats to the species which can be mitigated: electrocution, impact against suspended cables and fences, illegal killing during hunting season, as well as anthropic disturbance and destruction of breeding sites.
