책과 진귀한 장식물을 그린 4폭 병풍이다. 걷어 올린 휘장 안으로 책과 문방구, 과일과 꽃 그리고 중국의 고동기물을 다채롭게 묘사했다. 문방도는 왕의 일상 공간인 편전이나 왕세자가 거처하는 동궁에 설치하여 학문에 힘쓰기를 바라는 뜻을 담은 그림이다. 조선 왕실은 문방도 속 다양한 책과 진귀한 장식물을 통해 왕실의 안녕과 번영을 기원하는 마음을 담았다.
This four-panel folding screen depicts books along with rare, decorative items. Behind a rolled-up curtain can be seen vividly illustrated scholarly possessions, fruit and flowers symbolozing good fortune and auspiciousness, and curiosities from china. Folding screens with books and scholar’s utensil such as this one were found in Pyeonjeon where the king handled everyday administrative matters. They were also placed in Donggung, the residential space of the crown prince, to convey the wish that he would devote himself to learning.
