I've heard rumours that there are programs, but they are either very hard to get a hold of, obscure, or not as informative as MATS. I plan to eventually cover memory corruption on AMD if I can find/write any half-working script, but it will be a while before I make a video on it.

@@TechCemetery sounds good, i believe i have a few RX 470 cards with memory corruption, a couple of them display garbage and couple don't display anything, could also be the gpu itself or one of the voltage rails, i haven't checked them yet

@@JR-ob7hz mate, if you haven't checked your rx 470 bios, do check. i had a few rx 570 that had garbage display, but it had a different memory bios (card was using elpida module, bios was samsung) flashed the correct bios and i got good display. ofc this assumes you haven't checked the bios lol. if you have, and that wasnt the problem, sorry to patronise.

Fantastic video. I was working on the same card with similar issues, and following this video I ran MATS which showed me a memory module had an issue. On closer inspection, I realized there were damaged traces between that module and the CPU. I repaired those traces and now the card works. GREAT videos and thankyou!

Generally yes, you have to keep the capacity and manufacturer the same if not the memory module model itself. But in cards like the 1080, since GDDR5X is made exclusively by Micron, you can always substitute a higher binned memory module.

Given the age difference between those cards, I'm not sure. You'll just have to check the markings and compare datasheets( if available).

Well lools like they're both different, rx 550 use only 4 memory banks and r9 270 use 8 so i would need 4 more I've checked the datasheet and the memory module is both compatible

You should just break off the little latch on the end of the PCI-e slot... It will save you a lot of hassle. It's not really needed when you're running the cards on a testbench. The latch is really only to hold it in when the motherboard is in a case and the gpu is sideways. Makes swapping out cards a lot faster, especially when you get cards with a backplate and huge cooler, or a motherboard with a tiny latch.

@Tech Cemetery I tried MATS on my RTX 3080 but it fails as MATS doesn't detect the PCI device (even though it runs in windows). I'm guessing i need to get a newer MATS version but can't find a newer one anywhere. Do you know if 400.184 supports RTX 30 series? Having an intermittent issue on my card (Dell RTX 3080) where i believe it's one of the DDR ram chips and need to pinpoint which one to try to reflow it. Thanks in advance!

if you turn on CSM compability in BIOS and run MATS directly (not from UEFI) you will see how the block were checked, not only blank screen

@@obdarchoock test your ram as well to be sure. memtest86+ do that, run it for whole night, or use built in widows memory diagnostic tool, less precise but faster. I had weird restarts, blamed my 1070 but after running ram test I know it is not my card, at least not alone.

Do you know of what tool AMD uses? My SAPPHIRE R9 390 8GB NITRO gpu keeps crashing when loading any AMD drivers. I can only use the GPU in safe mode or after I DDU and not allow any drivers to be installed. I saw another video you did and you were able to correct an NVIDIA card using MATS. By the way, I have an established ebay store though not much on there now. If you think there is commonality of failed parts for GPUs...say vram, Mosfets, inductors etc...I'll put them on my store and give you 10%. For example, for HDTV repairs, there are lots of repair "kits" or "bundles" for sale that include things like capacitors, mosfets, etc. There may be a similar opportunity for GPU repair in this market.

I could use your help. EVGA 980ti. Run MATS and I get FBIOE1 write errors. I replaced the memory module on the card(module #9 when counting anti clockwise). The error is still present. Did I replace the wrong one? Or is there something else wrong?

Is it normal to have a small number of write errors on all chips? I've tried my home PC (3070) and my work one (1060) and both show between 50-60 write errors across all the RAM chips. Not sure if this means my card is bad or not? I started testing this as my home 3070 had artifacts and then blue screened while playing Tarkov, so far it has been OK since the crash but it sent me down this path as its still in warranty with Nvidia until Nov 23.

Thank you for this video and the tools! The memory test app did not recognize my RTX-2080ti but worked on a GTX-1060. My 2080 fails within seconds when running CUDA applications under BOINC such as Asteroids and Einstein at home. The card seems to be working fine for any other use. If a memory failure occures in upper memory is it possible for a bios mod to exclude memory? For example using 2080 bios instead of 2080ti? The apps I run only use 4gb of the 11gb on the ti. [edit] My Bad! Problem was thermal shutdown.

I made the changes to the configuration file, then loaded a 16GB USB stick with the ISO using BalenaEtcher (I use Xubuntu if that matters). That part was easy. Then I plugged in an old Nvidia Quadro NVS GPU with 1GB VRAM, and it tested, passed and shut down the PC within less than a minute. Then, I replaced the Quadro with the MSI 980 Ti (reference) and it's been doing its thing for the last half hour or so ... screen is on (backlight is lit) but there's no picture. Still waiting for it to finish so I can read the report ...

I found your videos very helpful and interesting, I got a Gigabytes 1080 Ti Xtreme that has the same symptoms, I check for shorts and voltages on the VRMs and diode test the PCIE lanes to the GPU then came across this video to test the VRAM, I am getting write errors on bank D0, unfortunately I don't have a BGA reflow station to replace it, just a soldering iron and heatgun station.

I use a heat gun for replacing memory modules. I'd recommend a repair shop can do this for you if you're uncomfortable or have never done it.

this is awesome, just used it and it said my old gtx 680 have all the memory modules bad or might be the memory controller, but anyways it work so nice. and my old main gpu (A gtx 1070) have bad solded memory on (my faut) and it just pin pointet to the exact same modul I am trying to reflow. can't wait to get it going again. Did you make the program yourself? it can be a very expensive product/tool and it is very nice for you to make it open source/free.

I have a Gigabyte rtx 2080super, i have made the test: FBIOD0 33write errors, FBIOD1 =527942 write errors.. so 33error does nothing, it is a bug, my wrong memory module is the D1? And probably it will be really only that module, not the GPU fault, because it showed only 1 bad memory chip? is there any relation of these things, if there is one bad memory at the test, there could be more probably the memory fault?

FBIOD0 = D0. The only way to determine if it's the memory or GPU is to swap it.

Also, i have seen electronic repairs at laptop motherboard, memory module problem, artifacts on screen.. the electrician grabbed a pencil and knocked the memory modules with the end of it. The faulty module changed the problems on the screen when that chip was knocked, it fluented the screen.. can it not be working here also? If you check the screen and knock the memories?

Here's a question... I have a Windforce OC GTX 770 2GB, and it's showing only write errors on every chip besides A0 and D0 but no read errors at all. Does that still sound like the memory is the issue? Need some advice on replacing the memory bank. I have a junker card with BGA memory, so I have the liberties of getting some practice with BGA chips. No matter how hot I have my heating station, the memory chip barely moves. Even at heat of 425F, after 10 minutes, very little movement of the chip. The heat is applied directly to the top of the chip, about an inch away. Only if I pry the chip with a tiny flathead screwdriver, almost to the point of tearing the chip from the board, does it come off, but not cleanly. I don't have the same problem with non-BGA chips. Am I doing something wrong? Am I impatient and wait longer for the heat to melt the solder? Every video I see, the BGA chip, after a few minutes, just comes off easy, but this is not my experience. The junker card is a broken Nvidia 1060 with a dead GPU.

I have a 1080ti that has the D0 memory module corrupt, I have ordered a replacement D9VRL but was just wondering how you go about removing, reballing and resoldering BGAs? Also, I have a 1070ti that has the 12V PCIe fuse blown with a short to ground evident on most of the capacitors around it. Any suggestions for what to look for that may cause that fuse to blow?

Some GPUs use combined high side + low side MOSFETs for VMem and/or VCore. If its gone bad it could short 12v down to ground. This might save 12V being sent to the GPU die itself, so it could be repairable. You should try to inject voltage and see with a thermal camera/freeze spray which component gets hot

It's an older video, but was wondering if you knew why i'm getting an "Assertion error" when trying to use MODS on a GTX 1080Ti, the MATS goes fine, but the MODS throws this: "Gpu.ShutDown Mods detected an assertion failure" and gives me a FAIL. Tried on the 367.38.1 version, the 400.184 gives me a "heat load not defined" error regardless of the commands used, just doesn't run it. Any ideas?

The google drive doesn't have the entirety of MODs and so MODs itself doesn't work. You can visit the discord for the "Learn Electronics Repair" KZbin channel and get a working copy of it.

Hey man thanks! I have a rtx2070 that I must underclock the memory to make it work. It has the micron memory. I ran the mats/mods and it fails on FBIOD0 with 33 write errors, the errors by address are like (expected)00000000 (actual)00000773 and (expected)ffffffff (actual)ffff0749, etc... always that low order word. Do you think It could be fixed by replacing that ram chip, and if so where can I get it? Thanks

@@MrRufos86 Nah, I just use it with the memory under clocked, and it's fine. I can't really justify spending any money on it.

if you got a 33 error and Failing Bits: A032 A033 A034 A035 A036 A037 A038 A039 A040 A041 A042 A043 A044 A045 A046 A047 should i replace that memory chip? i already did replace it but still got this error. samsung k4g80325fb-hc28 same memory i got 5 extra donor boards.

Nice video. But, I'm having some problems with the 400.184 files. When I go to the google drive link I only get two files, called "mats" and "mods" (no file extensions), not some extractable file that I can actually copy anything from.

There is a folder (with mats and mods) and two files (img and exe) on the google drive. You need to download them all.

@@Mueller3D I got confused because the folder and the file had the same name :) I got it sorted out. The only thing I don't get is that I get 33 errors on some chip regardless of GPU, which seems to be a bug.

I have mats / mods and it works great. I´ve tested one RTX 3070 but another one has a black screen and how can I start mats/mods automatically with a script that saves a report on the stick?

Hey man! Could you take a look on a mats report? I've been working on a 1070, and, unfortunately changing a memory module didn't stop the memory errors (bank B1 and C0). I think the controller itself is faulty, but I'm not sure because one of the banks had the same "kind" of error (A1), but a simple reflow solved it. Do you have any tip? I'm thinking to reball the gpu chip, maybe there is a missing pad or missing ball, I don't know. I do know that the card was already fixed one time (I don't know what was the issue), but couldn't be done this time. I just don't trust enough the people who worked on the card, sometimes they are simply to work on and sometimes don't have much knowledge.

Hi, I have a strange behavior on an Inno3D 1080 Ti (reference pcb) that works "fine" for a minute or two of load then it artefacts everywhere, there is no memory issue on MATS even with 1024MB of memory tested. What do you think ?

Voltage issue? Maybe there is a dying component that after a couple of minutes it heats up and loads too much current, dropping a lot and making it insufficent for the memory chips thus causing artifacts? Idk
