My main experience is with MacBook 2006-2009 models and iBook G3/G4 models. So your system may be different. The best way to "test" it is to charge it all the way up, then set a timer and turn off the sleep mode. See how long it goes. I'm actually planning to do a video soon on batteries, as a matter of fact.

On a fun note of "knowing what to buy" I was at a thrift store locally and found a Dell Optiplex GX-240, by itself, for $10. The best test I could do was to grab a power cable from a nearby monitor (no VGA was around so I couldn't try out the display and PC together) and power it up to SEE if it looked like it was booting. Bought it, got it home, and after nuking XP and installing Windows 2000 (as per the COA it had, which is the whole reason I bought it) I had a working machine. The hard drive is in kind of rough shape, but as it stands the machine is rock solid. Yeah, it's a desktop and much of this video applies to laptops, but the point is I KNEW it was a nearly 15 year old machine that I intended to run outdated software on (for gaming reasons :D ), so, yeah... already knowing in my head what I wanted, even in the "outdated" category helped out. Knowledge is power, after all....

Some other tips for laptop hunting: -Have a general idea of what uses you will want out of the laptop. This would give you an idea of what specs you would want for it to get the most use out of it for your everyday needs. -Make sure the laptop has enough memory for optimal usage and check if the OS on it is a 32-bit or 64-bit system. 32-bit systems have a 4 GB limit they can properly address. 64-bit systems can access more, but should have at least 6 GB or more for optimal memory access and to reduce strain on the processors. -Have a large enough harddrive on it that will be able to store whatever programs and personal files will be installed and saved on it. It doesn't have to be a mammoth like terabyte drives. But you don't want too little storage either since the harddrive will still be reserving some space for system files the OS will need to properly run. -Have a set budget in mind for how much you would be willing to invest in the computer. Sometimes, the laptop you get's perfect. Other times, you may have to pay to make some fixes or changes to it. Just make sure what you may have to pay extra for in repairs or part replacements won't cost more than what you pay for the laptop, when you could get a better machine with all that money spent. My current laptop is a Dell Inspiron 15 3000 Series I bought used 3 years ago for $180 on E-Bay with a Windows 8.1 64-bit OS. Specs on it were decent for the most part, though it got a bit sluggish at points if I had anything fairly memory-intensive running on its 4 GB of RAM. So spent an extra $50 to max out the memory on the laptop's motherboard to 8 GB. Performance with handling multi-tasking and fairly memory-intensive applications improved quite a bit compared with the memory upgrade.

One of the most important things to mention is the *video chip*... *AMD and nVidia chips tend to need reflowing after a few years of using the laptop, because they heat up a lot, causing the lead-free solder balls underneath to crack.* Professional reflowing is expensive and it doesn't come with an extended warranty, so that means you are left with replacing the motherboard. In which case you could as well sell the laptop for its functioning parts. *Intel video chips are the best choice if you want longevity.* Intels are not designed for gamers like AMD or nVidia are, but unlike the latter ones, Intels resist for much longer.
@soupflood9 жыл бұрын
***** Lead use is discouraged in civil electronics. Apparently, the European lead-free directive will increasingly affect the US because the same Asian producers export to both continents... so it's simpler and more marketing-friendly for them to comply with the most restrictive directive and just use one kind of material for both markets. Think of it this way: if 10 percent of the students in a school are muslim, the school will only provide halal food, despite the muslim population not being majority yet. It's cheaper that way. Lead and other toxic substances have been a great part of modern technology for a long time but due to more and more people affording and trashing this technology, these toxic substances had to be reduced. Thus, RoHS and the development of lead-free solder, which is still in its infancy.

id recommend that you do such a stress test with a temp monitoring application and in a cool preferably air conditioned room to avoid getting reboots from tripping the thermal protection of a computer in a hot room.Also do a memory test and check the hard drive for bad sectors as well if time permits.Check as well for bulges/cracks/other signs of straining plastic near the hinges which would mean of hinge failure.scratches/Cracks on other parts could either be that the computer had a hard life or damage from service work.work. BTW if your prospective model series has a history of problems or recalls for it make sure that the unit had the required service(s) done and make sure the seller backs the unit with a warranty.

3:52 i feel like the "How old is it?" chart is actually out of date itself. I have some thinkpads that are now 9 years old. They got some Core2Duo in them and are running windows 7/Windows 8.1 and have around 4 hour battery life. They can handle almost all tasks i'd do on a modern laptop without problem and are way sturdier than some new laptops i got..... Just saying that a device is bad because it's old isn't actually that accurate these days.
@hey74923 жыл бұрын
How old is it refers to the period of use of the specific device, not the year it was available for buying.
@Scitch873 жыл бұрын
@@hey7492 that doesn't make any sense. The hardware itself doesn't get any faster the longer you wait. So if you bought a device 9 years ago it's a 9 year old device. If someone bought the same device 7 years ago instead it wouldn't mean that it was faster than the one bought 9 years ago. It's still the same device with the same technology in it even if it had a 2 year shorter period of use.
@hey74923 жыл бұрын
@@Scitch87 I never said that waiting for a device would make it faster. I'll give a quick example. I'm from South America and things get delayed here a lot, so while you guys get the 2021 models in 2021, we may get it in just 2022 depending on the brand, model, and market. The ones that arrive here though, aren't necessarily used. So if they're new, they don't count as "one year old device" (in the way that the chart of this video works) they become one year old when the first owner started using it one year ago. That's literally it. It's like a baby, we don't count the months when they weren't physically around us
@Scitch873 жыл бұрын
@@hey7492 that doesn't make sense either. The release date for you is always the release of the country you're living in. Which would also be accurate for the chart. So the "Period it was available for buying", as you called it earlier, is different for many countries either way. That was always the case. That still doesn't mean the device itself would not be out of date. The software you use is still newer and therefore (in many cases) less suited for such a device. It doesn't even contradict what i said in the slightest. I think you are either misreading or reading too much into what i said. Since my original post said that a old laptop is still perfectly capable of many tasks.

I said sure, maybe I could fix it or use it for parts and said thanks. I didn't touch the thing for like 6 months and when I did, I decided it was likely just the HDD which failed and replaced it with a spare I already had, reinstalled windows and found all the drivers and sold it. About a week after selling it I get an angry drunk phone call from my friend telling me I'm an asshole and that someone told him I sold his laptop and kept all the money for myself. I had planned on telling him myself next time we saw each other but obviously someone else beat me to it. I ended up giving him half of what I made off selling the thing just to get him to shut the fuck up about it but it really pissed me off that he'd have given me something like that and get jealous that I actually managed to repair it and make some money off it. It wasn't like he needed the cash either - he is much better off than I am and it actually hurt me financially to pay him the half as I'd already spent the money as though it was all extra income and bought something I wouldn't have if I had known I'd be giving half the money away.

I have 2 Pentium 4 computers which are both well within your range of being obsolete. They both work just fine with installs of modern Linux OS distros. Full internet access with standard definition videos on KZbin playable with no problem. Only shortcoming is not gaming capable, but then even most modern integrated graphics computers are not gaming ready either, so no big shock there.
@michaelcox98557 жыл бұрын
Good for you that you make enough to think 500$ is not expensive. To many, myself included, it is a huge amount of money. That said, yes the newer integrated graphics are far better and more capable, this is true. 620 more than 520 though.

MrDrunkenMoose You can do it yourself for less than 200 dollars dude just google ifixit macbook magsafe repair
@michaeldickens11019 жыл бұрын
Jtag Sheep is right, you can fix it yourself for much less by getting the replacement part from either ifixit or OWC, ifixit also has really nice step-by-step photo directions of how to replace different parts As for the MagSafe adapter breaking internally with barely any force, something must have happened prior to that in order for it to break (like dropping it or previous rough usage) and the minor jostling of the port was just enough to make it stop working I have one of the first releases of the MacBook Air, and while I have had issues with the HDD CoD and a swelled battery, I was easily able to replace both myself and I still (since I first purchased the computer new) haven't noticed any issues with the MagSafe adapter, that leads me to believe that any damage to the MagSafe adapter shows signs of abuse or misuse (and usually in that case, there are other visible signs of abuse)

Red Flags: As you said, PayPal is fine on eBay. Also, PayPal now has strong protection for buyers, where you can return an item for a full refund and they pay the postman. Missing adapter: With eBay, just check the seller rating. Don't deal with anything less than 99.6% with 100 or more laptops sold. Quite a few highly rated sellers have over 50% of their laptop inventory minus the power supply. I'm talking 100% rated sellers with a thousand or more sales under their belts. They can't all be stolen. They have all manner of universal adapters in their refurbishing shops, and it's not worth their time to buy and match adapters -- it's worth YOUR time. I've done it a half dozen times, with no problem, but I never deal with less than stellar ratings. Password: I agree, mainly because there's no way seller could have checked it out thoroughly without knowing the password. Too good to be true: If you know how to look, you can find incredible deals on eBay that seem WAY too good, yet they're completely legit. Again, check out the ratings, and read comment histories. Ask the seller a question to get a feel for his/her user support and motive for selling.

1 point : HDD health, it's good to know if the hdd is about to die
@MrSupercar553 жыл бұрын
That’s not really a problem. Just swap it out for an SSD. It’ll still connect via a SATA cable, so you won’t need an adapter of any kind for that. All you’ll need really is a screwdriver that matches your screws, something to put the screws into - like an ashtray or something - and an anti-static bracelet if you can’t be arsed to keep grounding yourself as static electricity is your enemy (not enema, that’s something you eat at Taco Bell). Laptop HDDs are girly things compared to SSDs anyway. They usually only hold about 500GB of data, whereas an SSD will hold up usually 2-4TB of data, and can retrieve data quicker.
@gandalfwiz200073 жыл бұрын

Nice guide, here's some more tips! Don't rush into buying anything, the really good deals will get sold after 2-3 days, if you check the website every day for a month you'll get a better deal than if you close a deal the first day you start looking. When you buy used stuff you have the upper hand it's not like walking into a shop and buying a brand new laptop. The price is a suggestion, you can nagotiate and most sellers can agree to 20% off. If you arrange a meeting don't buy if you can't check it. Check control panel-->system for cpu and RAM information and dxdiag for GPU info! Prefer a laptop in good condition than one with slightly better performance! Lot's of little problems usually mean more problems will appear.

Just buy from sellers that have actual pictures of the computer working. Don't buy from people using generic pictures. Make sure the seller has a great feedback, where they praise them for quick shipping and better than described items. I buy hundreds of laptops and electronics on Ebay per month. Here is what I noticed. Beware of young white women. Also don't buy from young black males. There are many ways you can tell who you are buying from. Reflections in the picture. User id. Name of the seller. I am not kidding. Every single problem transaction came from those two groups. For some reason I have not had a single problem with white male sellers or black females. Even though these days Ebay is safe and they will refund your money, you are wasting time with those motherfuckers. It doesn't matter how great the deal, if it's not real. Also, if you sell on Ebay, don't ship to England, France or Israel. You will get robbed. I shipped to Russia, Austria, Germany, Italy, Greece, Sweden, not a single issue. Brazil was another problematic country.

Two months ago, the WiFi cable on my laptop (HP) was damaged and I purchased another HP (Elitebook 840) from a technician. Prior to the transaction, I did inspect the laptop which is in good condition, although the memory was no good and the hard drive was 320gigs. When I turned on the computer, the operating system functioned wonderfully. The upgrades I made were with the memory (16 gigs of RAM) and the hard drive (1 TB SSD). To keep my laptop running, I have Webroot Antivirus and Malware Bites installed and run Disk Cleaner to clean up any junk files.

I would also like to point out, that many computers, especially business grade ones have an onboard diagnostics feature. On Dell laptops you can power it on while holding Fn, or Mute and it will say "Diagnostic mode" alternately you can hit F12 and select diagnostics. On a Mac you can turn it on while holding the letter D to run tests. For a quick drive check, I recommend Crystal Disk Info, it will often show you if a drive is in a warning state where it has had some problems but not a full failure yet.

Once upon a time, I was a new computer user at a professional photographer's studio and wondered about buying a laptop. At the time, all I could afford was an 80286/12 Toshiba 1200XE unit (CGA mono graphics). I should have waited a few months, since 80386 laptops arrived the next quarter. The 20MB HDD did OK for word processing and database files, but the graphics display was a letdown. (The home computer was a 80386DX 33 with VGA graphics, by comparison.) I eventually gave it to a friend of the family who was out-of-state college bound. I swore off laptops until my Apple expert and I turned a Mac SE 4/40 into a Mac SE/30 32/540 via software and eBay hardware upgrades. Then I went looking for a Mac laptop via eBay. Long story short, an ex-elementary school Mac Powerbook 1400C (166Mhz Power PC 603e) freed me from the desktop tower PC. The Internet called, and the search for a G3 Powerbook began. But that's another story.:

You should use a secure eraser software that copies random data or known data over the disc, if you buy and if you sell a computer. I bought an used pc, formated it, and later run recuva to recover a file I erased, and found personal info of the previous owner. I could have stolen his identity if I had wanted.
@HR-wd6cw4 жыл бұрын
One thing that should have been covered, and really only applies to Apple products, is to make sure that the previous owner has released the computer from their iTunes, iCloud accounts so that you can add it or use it with yours. If they haven't done this, then you may run into problems when you reset/re-install MacOS and go to use the App store to install software. This is important because if this is NOT done, it will create headaches and will make it hard for you because you will have to take it to an Apple store and prove that you own the machine in order for them to unlock and remove it from someone else's account (often times, in the past with iPhones, I have found you generally have to show something like a receipt or possibly a bill of sale, and they sometimes will need to contact the seller--just a pain in butt in the end). So if the previous user has NOT released or unlinked the Mac from their accounts, then don't buy it, or view it in person and make sure this has been done (personally, I would say always buy used computers in Person as mentioned here, rather than on eBay, unless they are from a trusted source that deals with used computers and can check for this stuff before reselling them).
