Probably one of the most used tree internationally for a Bonsai that is from South Africa, have a lot of them growing in my backyard, going to make some cuttings in our Spring/Summer. The Spekboom are edible also. Keep up with the great work and greetings from South Africa.

I am fairly new to bonsai and got a couple of gallon pots at Walmart after Memorial Day.....paid $5 for it and have made at least 25 plants from it. Even planting them in rocks. You can't kill these unless you overwater. They are fun beginner plants that can turn into fantastic bonsai!! Thanks for the extra knowledge!!

Jerome: "Let me introduce you to my 'dwarf jade' bonsai."(proceeds to bring out a gargantuan "dwarf jade".) Thanks for defending the Portulacaria Afra. Many bonsai artists don't count it as true bonsai. I love this species as bonsai and have several, three of which that are over 10 tears old.

I noticed in my climate upper midwest. It's important to find that perfect ammount of dryness before working the tree. If you wait to long they recover but about a week slower. Same with reducing foliage at a repot. Take to much off and it will add to recovery time. I used Jerome's method and it was recovered right at about 2 weeks. 3 weeks for my mistakes lol. I'm learning. But doing well ty for all your information.

Hello, I waited a week without water, then I revassed it in inorganic soil, pruning the roots, putting in full sun in the west without watering it and now in 2 days the leaves have wrinkled. Is it normal? Do I wait a few more days before watering? Thank you

Over and under watering are causes of death. Use a well draining soil mix like a 50/50 mix of pumice and lava rock. Watch the leaves. When they show a bit of shriveling it means you need to water.

Do you make sure to bring a jade inside when rain is comming to control the water supply? And when u covered the entire soil with fertilizer, do you personally remove it or does it vanish on its own at the end of the summer/growing season?
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply Жыл бұрын
I don't move my jades when it rains because I use good bonsai soil, so that is not a problem at all. The fertilizer dissolves completely over time so at the end of the growing season the residue is very small. In the Spring I apply a fresh layer of top soil.

Every spring I grow a whole bunch of flats of alyssum and marigolds and give all the extras to my neighbors, so nobody really has to worry about insecticides or wind blowing insects around. They attract assassin bugs, ladybugs, and parasitoid wasps and those guys will happily guard all of your plants from the nasties that blow in. Big succulents like portulacaria or monstrose cacti and sempervivum and echeveria bring in jumping spiders and they'll keep your plants clean too if you're in a climate for it.

How can you tell the difference between underwatering and overwatering of the tree. I currently keep mine indoors due to the colder weather. When I first bought mine it was full of leaves and now it’s lost almost all its leaves and some branches. I noticed a lot of wilting of leaves and a mixture of fallen green healthy leaves. Any advice on this? Also what could be signs of root rot for this species and how to address it?
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply 2 ай бұрын
In your case, the leaf shedding happens due to a change in environment and light. When you move your tree indoors for an extended period, it tends to shed leaves to adjust. If the leaves turn dark yellow and feel a bit wet, that’s a sign of overwatering. On the other hand, if the leaves become wrinkly, that indicates the tree needs more water. Hope this helps-keep growing! 🌳

i recently got one of these trees and i live in the UK. in this video you said that the temperature for this tree shouldnt drop below 70 degrees fahrenheit but, where i live, most of the year it is below 70 degrees. so what should i do? ive heard people say to put it out during the warm months and bring it in for the winter but the weather is reealllly unpredictable, for example, one day it could be really warm and sunny then the next rainy and almost freezing so i'm not sure what to do. any advice would be greatly appreciated. 😄
