Thanks again for an interesting and informative video. I’ve been keeping and breeding Manacapuru angels for the last 4 or 5 years and agree with much, but not all of what you say. For example, I find that the adults can be very aggressive towards each other both in a group or when breeding as pairs. I used to keep the adults in two separate tanks with the males in one tank and females in the other (I found this reduced aggression). Secondly, the strain that I have show full body bars and a reasonable amount of iridescence whereas there is a another “strain” that is lacking the body bars in the centre of the body but exhibit a strong bar that is closest to the caudal. Thanks again for the video 🤓👍
@tropicalfishhub3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing! This is an interesting observation about body bars. I had a fully striped variant as well. They were German-bred and I had strong suspicions that they had some striped scalare genes in them. They were also far more aggressive than my solo-striped Manacapurus. Interestingly, all solo-striped fish are either wild caught or f1. Do you know whether your original multi-striped stock is tank-bred or wild-caught? There is also a wild rio Nergo scalare variant with visible stripes and red back, which is sometimes crossed with Manacapuru or labeled as Manacapuru. Simon Forkel (the prominent German breeder) says that striped red back variant is 100% rio Negro, not rio/lago Manacapuru.

@@tropicalfishhub unfortunately I don’t know my Manacapuru origin they were simply purchased as Redback Manacapuru from a LFS. Simon Forkels comment are however very interesting

Awesome video! I was debating last year to ship them across the country (Canada), but than decided to wait and am playing with the idea to get Phillipino Blues. I just found some Thailand imported juveniles yesterday and so far are doing great. But so glad I found your video, was gonna add a 40 gallon tank, so better go to the 60 gallon instead. They are in a 20 gallon now, but only 4 month roughly. If they are truly calmer that`s great, but wasn`t aware they are bigger. Couldn`t find much info before, so thank you;0)

Thank you for this. I have been in the hobby for 45 years and only recently have I been introduced to the Manacapuru Angelfish. In fact, I am going to convert my 90 gallon aquarium into a SA biotope with the Manacapuru as the feature fish - - a group of 5. I recently saw some juveniles at my LFS that were labeled as "Manacapuru." Now these could be red backs OR just plain zebra coloration. I thought all Manacapuru's were red backs until I watched your viewed. I will need to be careful when purchasing and ask to make sure they are the red variety.

I'm glad the video was useful. Non-red back Manacapurus are a rarity and only specialised retailers stock them, in which case they always labelled as non-red back. but of course it is always safer to ask!

I live in Sweden and too got F3 from a Polish breeder here who had his ones från Simon Forkel as F2 :-) Very regal fish and after having a nightmare of having black marble scalare constantly squabbling and killing each other, these ones are just "angels" for real. Have 3 of them and a zebra since before. They all got in pairs and divided the tank in two defending their territory. Though not closely as ugly as nasty black ones. Just miner pokes and pushes if a intruder approaches. They go with gourami and ternezias, very peacefully indeed, but as clearly an alpha fish of the tank. Colored out at probably 7-8 months in very bright red now though Tetra Pro color is not every day on their meny - mostly frozen larvae of all kinds, as I spoiled them, haha. They often ignore dry food nowadays.
@tropicalfishhub Жыл бұрын
I also noticed that Manacapuru angels are more docile than captive bred varieties. I guess decades of inbreeding has made marble scalare aggressive.

@tropicalfishhub3 ай бұрын
Thank you:) I'm happy that you liked the video. Some Manacapuru strains might take more time to colour up. If your fish are not from wild parents or f2/f3/f4, they may never get truly red because red colour begins disappearing with over breeding. I think you don't need to feed them colour foods, just wait another month or so and they may colour up

So many questions come to mind when I watch your videos, I keep posting them so I don't forget... in your tank you have sump. In one of the pictures in this video there was an inlet for a canister filter. Why do you have a sump instead of a canister? I think sump would be cleaner and more efficient for gas exchange, besides easier to maintain. Are these the main reasons why you chose sump? Thanks very much for the videos and answers! All the best!
@tropicalfishhub2 жыл бұрын
Thank you:) I used to have sump on my main display tank and canister on other smaller tanks. The sump was great, but unlike saltwater hobby there is no point of installing a sump on smaller tank; there isnt much of a bioload there so canister is more than enough.

What would be the minimum height for a tank with Altum or Manacapuru angels in your opinion, please? Let's say for a 180cm long and about 45cm front to back tank? Would 50cm be enough for it's height? Would those measurements be good to keep about 10 to 15 Altum and/or Manacapuru angels? Thanks!

Yes your tank size should be great for a group of angels. Some people say that need minimum tank height of 60cm, but I think 50cm works quite well. They rarely grow taller than 30cm
