As a huge fan of NASCAR, I don’t understand why they dont take a racing line... (for motorsports) wouldnt they go faster if they went wide on the straights and then took the inside line in corners? And also wouldnt they be able to go faster in the turns if they had both skates touching the ice at the same time all the way through until corner exit?

kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y6nJonywnricprs here you see 3 girls in the turn only one has both feet down and shes the last at the end humans dont gain speed by friction ,Skating is like running you push your self into the ground to propell, the blades under the foot just make it easier to maintain high speed thei dont make you gain speed aktualy the skaters that just plant an foot in the corner cant gain speed, if you do an short run motion steping over the left foot makes you gain speed when exiting the corner 2 times faster than doing slow push in an straight line. on an short track the one with the best explosive crossover ,balance and intuition to see the smoothest path to takeover the opponent is at an advantage

I agree I can’t say it better all I can say is friction slows you down

I am actually a NASCAR driver and have raced cars and speed skated most of my adult life The line that they are taking is exactly what I would take on a flat short track. Very late apex, which will let you hug the corner and hold and protect the inside line. I promise you, one blade on the ice is more than enough to give you traction in the corner. It's like being on a rail. Not like in a car where you can exceed your traction limit with only one tire. There two is better. Not the case on ice.
