My feed is somtimes good. Here's some exceedingly interesting versions of Inner Urge on KZbin.1st a piano alto duet with Patrick Bartley Miles Lennox 2. Joey Alaxander killing it with Larry Grenadier and Kendrick Scott 3. Peter Beets Trio with Kurt Rosenwinkel 4.And lastly but very interesting to me at least Kuzey Sinan Aktug trio. Oh one more the great Kenny Wheeler with Joe Henderson with an allstar Big Band 1987

Thanks for tuning in! I actually got to play at the Pittsburgh Jazz Festival last month, so I got this t shirt "honestly!" Hey, if you haven't already, please jump in to a Free 30 Day Limited access to JazzWire. I would love to work together with you in a more meaningful (and not too expensive) way. With the Free 30 Day Trial, you’ll see what we're doing behind the wall! You'll be inside in about 20 seconds, no credit card required. app.jazzwire.net/free-trial. These videos are great, but they are a SHADOW compared to the real work and we can do together!

What are the odds?! I was looking over that same tune two days ago and it was open on my music stand when this video popped up! Great discussion, Jeff!

Man, I cone back to this tune ALL the time, for 30+ years now. It's such a great one, and such a butt kicker. Glad our synchronicity kicked in on this one!

Hi Jeff I love this. I think it's the best blue note album I've heard so far and I'm not even a big fan of the saxophone. I prefer the trumpet. The compositions are fantastic, engaging and have a lot of variety within the tracks you don't know where it's going. Every track is different. The piano playing is awesome. Hard bop doesn't interest me too much but I love post bop and avant garde even some free jazz.

So glad you liked the Guided Listening, and of course thrilled that you went on to listen to the whole album. JOE IS THE MAN!! Please subscribe if you haven't yet, and stay tuned for more great listening!

Interesting that you described post bop tunes as being more structured. I noticed that Horace Silver’s comping on The Preacher was very structured and I’ve been trying to copy that when I play that tune (during the head only). I’m going to use Inner Urge to practice keeping time during drum solos (among many other things).

It's true, post-bop definitely had more rhythm section "parts" that have to be learned. With bebop, it was more left up to the player, especially in the melodies. In the solos, the post bop tunes open up for the rhythm section usually (but not always).

Hahahaaa! Well, that was the "guided" part of the Guided LIstening. May I suggest buying the Joe Henderson album outright? It was a LOT less talking on it, and it is very very good!
