As a new teacher, this was so helpful! I really love my small group time, and want to make sure I'm giving them the best that I can. I learned many new things! I'm guilty of the wait out, the stare, and forgetting the bigger picture at my table. It makes sense to give it to them in the beginning of the week, that's my job, teach what they don't know. Literally a duh lightbulb moment for me. Thank you!!

How do you take anecdotal notes or document reading for assessment or grouping? Great Vid!
@talkinchalk
@talkinchalk 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks 😁 I used OneNote to keep notes using a basic grid with names, day and book title. My running records were in separate books.
@edon4304
@edon4304 6 жыл бұрын
Awesome. I find this really difficult when working with my group. Do you do running records in this time? We have 1 task per reading session for each group. It just takes so long to get everything done :/
@talkinchalk
@talkinchalk 6 жыл бұрын
I do running records every Friday. The annecdotal notes dont happen in detail and really should only note main points u will need the next day. Otherwise you're just taking notes instead of teaching. Keep the tasks succinct as they can do more during their independent activity time ❤️

I am teaching remedial reading this year and have large groups of students who are all struggling readers on varying levels. I feel very comfortable teaching the young grades (1, 2, 3), but am still finding my way with teaching grades 4 and 5. These kids have missed a lot of skills early on and are still expected to pass tests on grade level.
@talkinchalk
@talkinchalk 6 жыл бұрын
Hmmm. The expectation to reach grade level is an understandable benchmark as you want them to reach the desired levels for their age but its not necessarily the way to get there. I would recommend using running records till you think they are capable of trying the grade tests. Are you in America?

@@talkinchalk this post has quite a negative take on L3. Any comments? gregashman.wordpress.com/2017/04/13/what-can-we-learn-from-the-l3-debacle/

I think for every positive perspective there is always someone who has an opposite perspective. However, considering L3 is stemmed from Reading Recovery and RR was reviewed extensively then scrapped. I think we are definitely due for a close inquiry into L3 and if it is being implemented in the best possible way for students or if indeed it's something that needs changing.

Hi Bec, thanks for taking the time to share your ideas on KZbin. I have some questions based on the video. Firstly what are your thoughts on using decodable texts such as the Fitzroy readers you spoke about for beginning readers? Personally I love them because I find it easy to explicitly teach when I use them because all the phonemes they encounter in the text have be taught and mastered previously. Secondly do you know the original source of the stretchy snake/chunky monkey posters? I see them in so many rooms but no one I ask knows where they come from.
@talkinchalk
@talkinchalk 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Lucy! I definitely think we need to always remember student need when it comes to selecting texts. Ideally we want to keep current, relevant, evidence-based resources but if a child isn't progressing then we need to try something different. I like some of those older styles because I learned to read on them an have always been a solid reader. My own kids read them too. So I can understand how a student might connect or benefit from them. Im not sure of the original source but theres so much out there on Google that I just use those displays usually.

Really great info. Thanks Bec! I just wondered, do you see every group every day? If so, how many texts (reading books) would you typically get through with each group over the course of a week? I teach P/1/2 this year so I have a wiiiiiide range of abilities and I am finding the older children love to have a new book each time they meet me for guided reading.
@talkinchalk
@talkinchalk 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Im glad you liked the video 😀 I only use the one text each week for guided reading, however they access new books in their independent reading and modelled reading. Its good to engage in a new book everyday but for the time they are with me for explicit instruction the focus is on the one text so I can focus on deep knowledge and understanding.
