The 15% karma food is definitely worth the 20-odd silver. When you do the tiered dailies (jp, race, tixx, frosty etc) they award tonnes of karma each and that extra 5% is noticeable. Edit: buy the toy skins from the TP- they only cost a couple of silver and not the 7.5K karma which you're trying to gain.

Those are some valid points you can spend some gold if your main focus is gaining karma, but maybe new players would prefer to have some gold instead of karma still its up to everyone. Also, forgot to mention in the video but you need to open those daily karma boxes outside of pvp zones (jp, bell choir) just make them sit there until you leave those instances cause the karma infusion in your amulet does not register in those instances so you lose some boost there.
