Guild Wars 2's new strike: Legendary Cerus CM, done in 9:33 with Soulbeast.
This kill took a little over 100 hours due to our original strategy attempting to empower gluttony to prove it is possible.
The main mechanics of this boss can be disabled, one at a time, through player choice in which monster to kill during the split phases at 80% and 50%. In the normal mode you are able to kill two of the three set to be empowered, but this drops to just 1 in the Legendary CM version, adding to the difficulty. Originally, our strategy was to kill Despair, allowing the mechanic most groups considered mandatory to disable, Gluttony, to empower.
The Gluttony mechanic are the red orbs you see floating in toward the boss during the fight. If Cerus absorbs these, he gains stacks of an Empowered buff, causing the boss to deal 5% increased damage per stack. Each orb has 3 charges, which would give the boss 3 stacks. Instead, you are able to block the orb with 3 players, which in turn gain a debuff, Insatiable, causing the player to take constant damage.
Despair on the other hand causes the AoE's that we drop periodically to become enlarged and prevents them from disappearing at the end of each phase when originating from Cerus.
We set out to prove that empowering Gluttony was possible to achieve a kill with. We additionally set out to disprove the notion set forth from the community: a melee comp, or anything other than Virtuoso for that matter, could not kill the boss. We set on Soulbeast for it's extreme DPS and utility following the introduction of the Mace weaponset. We also opted for this comp for its ability to stack Despair's through Arctodus F2 and Signet of Stone invulnerability abilities, where we originally stacked all of the AoE's under the boss.
However, our Soulbeast comp was set to be nerfed, so we settled on empowering despair instead and achieved this kill within 2 days. You can find our best log with gluttony empower here: dps.report/LXqj-20240315-2112...
In the end, in the last 10% of the boss's HP, the raid-wide attacks combined with extreme constant damage on each player from the Insatiable stacks were very difficult to deal with. However, Gluttony empower was certainly possible with a bit more time. It's unfortunate that we did not end up achieving our original goal, but we did however achieve the world's first kill with a melee team composition.
Special thanks to Prud, Left, Ihce and Llyric for filling or contributing to this grind.
